Obama: "The World Has Always Been Messy... We’re Just Noticing Now Because Of Social Media"

The president downplays concerns of terrorism and crises, saying, “I promise you things are much less dangerous now than they were” in previous decades.

A day after saying "we don't have a strategy yet" to deal with Islamic State of Iraq and Syria militants, President Barack Obama on Friday sought to downplay concerns that terrorists and other international crises posed a greater threat to the U.S. than those during the Cold War.

Speaking at a private Democratic fundraiser in Purchase, N.Y., the president told donors, "if you watch the nightly news, it feels like the world is falling apart ... And I can see why a lot of folks are troubled."

But, Obama said, despite recent unrest in the Middle East, Russia's apparent invasion of Ukraine, and the explosive growth of ISIS, "the truth of the matter is, is that the world has always been messy."

"In part, we're just noticing now because of social media and our capacity to see in intimate detail the hardships that people are going through," the president told donors, who paid up to $32,400 a plate to attend the event. "The good news is that American leadership has never been more necessary, and there's really no competition out there for the ideas and the values that can create the sort of order that we need in this world."

His remarks came hours after the British government raised its terror threat level to "severe" as a result of militant activity in Iraq and Syria, meaning it is "highly likely" there will be a terrorist attack on UK soil.

"What we are facing in Iraq now with ISIL is a greater threat to our security than we have seen before," UK Prime Minister David Cameron said. "Poisonous ideology of Islamist extremism is the root cause of the terror threat," he continued.

Obama has faced criticism since telling reporters at a press conference Thursday "we don't have a strategy yet" to combat ISIS fighters in Syria, prompting Republicans to slam the president's foreign policy approach as the White House frantically tried to change the message.

"I promise you things are much less dangerous now than they were 20 years ago, 25 years ago or 30 years ago," Obama said Friday. "This is not something that is comparable to the challenges we faced during the Cold War."

Federal Judge Sides With Texas Abortion Clinics, Tosses Key Part Of Law

The law would have required abortion clinics to meet hospital-level operating standards, but opponents argued it would make it too costly to remain open.

The law — which Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed in 2013 — would have required abortion clinics to meet hospital-level operating standards. After the law passed, a group of clinics sued, arguing that the new requirements made it too costly to remain open. Many also argued the law was designed to force the clinics to close.

Proponents countered that the requirements were designed to protect women's health. There are 19 facilities in Texas that provide abortions, the AP reported.

In his ruling Friday, Judge Lee Yeakel said the law would "create an impermissible obstacle as applied to all women seeking a previability abortion."

The law drew national attention last year when Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis conducted a marathon filibuster to stop the law.

Davis' filibuster managed to kill the bill, but Perry brought it back during a special legislative session. He said that the state would "not allow the breakdown of decorum and decency to prevent us from doing what the people of this state hired us to do," the BBC reported. The law passed on its second time through the Texas legislature.

NASCAR Racer Tony Stewart Speaks For The First Time Since Killing Another Driver On The Track

“This is something that will definitely affect my life forever.”

NASCAR auto racing driver Tony Stewart reads a statement during a news conference at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga.

AP

NASCAR race driver Tony Stewart on Friday spoke publicly for the first time since striking and killing Kevin Ward Jr. on Aug. 9 at a dirt track in upstate New York.

Stewart read a brief statement in which he said the tragedy "will affect his life forever":

"This has been one of the toughest tragedies I've ever had to deal with both professionally and personally. This is something that will definitely affect my life forever. This is a sadness and a pain that I hope no one ever has to experience in their life.

With that being said, I know that the pain and the mourning that Kevin Ward's family and friends are experiencing is something that I can't possibly imagine.

I want Kevin's father, Kevin Sr., and his mother Pam, and his sisters Christi, Kayla, Katelyn, to know that every day I'm thinking about them and praying for them.

The racing community is a large family, as you guys know. Everyone's saddened with this tragedy.

I want to thank all my friends and family for their support through this tough emotional time, and the support from the NASCAR community, my partners, all of our employees. It's been overwhelming.

I've taken the last couple weeks off out of respect for Kevin and his family, and also to cope with the accident in my own way. It's given me the time to think about life and how easy it is to take it for granted.

I miss my team, my teammates. I miss being back in the race car. I think being back in the car this week with my racing family will help me get through this difficult time.

I also understand that all of you have many questions and want a lot of answers; however I need to respect the ongoing investigation process and cannot answer and address the questions at this time. Emotionally I'm not sure if I could answer them anyway.

We're here to race this weekend, and I appreciate your respect. There will be a day when I can sit here and answer the questions. Thank you."

The three-time NASCAR champion returns to the track in Atlanta for the first time this weekend since the fatal accident.

Senegal is now the fifth West African country to be affected by the deadly virus, along with Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria.

A university student infected by Ebola in Guinea traveled to Senegal seeking treatment in the country's capital Dakar this week, according to Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck. The student said he had had contact with infected patients in Guinea and was immediately quarantined.

Senegal shares a border with Guinea, where the outbreak began last year. In March, Senegal closed the border to prevent the spread of the outbreak, which has killed more than 1,500 people so far.

An experimental vaccine to prevent the Ebola virus is being tested next week, the National Institute of Health announced Thursday.

Malaysia Airlines — the country's loss-making national carrier — is set to cut 30% of its entire workforce and de-list as part of a restructure that will cost $1.9 billion, Reuters has reported.

The airline's majority investor, sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional, said it will slash staff by 6,000 to 14,000 as part of a massive overhaul aimed at stopping the long-term losses, which have been exacerbated by two of the biggest aviation disasters of the year.

The overhaul, which will also see Malaysia Airlines de-listed from the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange by the end of the year, is intended to make the carrier profitable within three years, Khazanah said.

Undercover air marshals on the flight restrained Edmund Alexandre, a Paris-born man, after he grabbed the arm of a flight attendant who had tried to intervene.

Alexandre was taken to a Boston hospital for a pre-existing health condition and was arraigned the following day on charges of interfering with a flight crew.

The test drones have been used to successfully deliver goods from neighboring farms in Queensland, Australia.

Australia was chosen by Google as the location for Project Wing because of the country's "progressive" laws on drones, which are more tightly regulated in other nations.

Google's drones are pre-programmed to fly to their destination, which differs from other drone models that are remotely controlled by someone on the ground.
