Woman Sentenced To Death For Apostasy Will Be Released Instead

The woman had been sentenced to death by hanging for converting to Christianity, but now will go free after the sentence sparked international outrage.

A 27-year-old Sudanese woman facing the death penalty for refusing to abandon Christianity will now be freed, according to multiple reports Sunday. Mariam Yahya Ibrahim — who gave birth to a girl while in prison — should be free within a few days, according Sudanese officials who spoke with the BBC.

Ibrahim also was facing 100 lashes for adultery as a result of marrying a Christian man. The sentence was handed down last month by a Sudanese court, which gave Ibrahim an ultimatum: convert to Islam or hang. Ibrahim told the court "I am a Christian," and was subsequently sentenced to die. She was eight months pregnant at the time.

The case stemmed from a Sudanese law requiring children to follow their father's faith. Ibrahim's father is a Muslim, though she was predominantly raised by her mother, an Orthodox Christian. After the sentence was handed down, Ibrahim's lawyers vowed to fight it.

Ibrahim's lawyers told Reuters that neither they nor her husband had been notified of her release.

The sentence prompted an international outcry, with the British Prime Minister David Cameron calling it "barbaric."

Sudan is one of 13 countries with death sentences for apostasy. Others include Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Ann B. Davis, the Emmy Award-winning actress known for her role as the beloved housekeeper Alice on The Brady Bunch, died Sunday after a fall at her Texas home. She was 88.

Davis's friend, Bishop William Frey, told CNN she fell and hit her head in the bathroom Saturday, leaving her comatose. Davis later died at a hospital in San Antonio.

Bexar County, Texas, medical examiner's investigator Sara Horne told the Associated Press an autopsy is planned for Monday.

Davis achieved stardom for her role in The Bob Cummings Show in the late 1950s where she won two Emmy Awards. She later joined the cast of the The Brady Bunch where she played Alice the housekeeper.

6 Climbers Declared Dead After Fall On Seattle's Mount Rainier

It was the worst disaster there in more than 30 years, officials say.

Six climbers were killed in a 3,300-foot fall along the north slope of Mount Rainier, officials said Saturday. It was the worst disaster on the mountain in more than three decades.

Tents and clothes mixed with rock and ice were found along the glacier at 9,500 feet, the National Park Service said.

Citing continuous ice and rock fall that make the area dangerous even for rescuers, Mount Rainier National Park officials said that there were no plans to recover the bodies of the six climbers.

The area will be checked periodically by air in the coming weeks and months, park spokeswoman Patti Wold told the Associated Press.

"It's inconceivable that anyone survived that," Wold said Sunday. She said it was unclear if a rock fall, avalanche or other factors caused their fall, she said, adding that "we don't even know if they were moving or if they were camping."

The six climbers included two guides from the Seattle-based company Alpine Ascents International, and four clients. The group was last heard from at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"He loved his family and his friends and they loved him back in return. We've lost a great friend," Marimow told the news site.

Everyone on board the small aircraft was killed after it crashed at Hanscom Field airport around 9:40 p.m. and "erupted into a fireball."
