Reporter Scolded By Sean Spicer: “We Are The Press Who Is Under Attack”

J. Scott Applewhite / AP Photo

White House correspondent April Ryan said Wednesday morning — one day after press secretary Sean Spicer told her to stop shaking her head during a news conference — that journalists covering the administration were “under attack.”

Ryan, who is the Washington Bureau Chief for American Urban Radio Networks, also said that she was beginning to consider Spicer was “showing a pattern” of mistreating female reporters.

In an interview on CNN, Ryan spoke out for the first time following Tuesday’s White House press briefing, which grew heated when she asked Spicer questions about Russia and the administration’s public image.

“It seems like you’re hell-bent on trying to make sure that whatever image you want to tell about this White House stays because at the end of the day,” he began before Ryan interjected to say that she was just reporting.

“You’re asking me a question and I’m going to answer it,” Spicer continued, “Which is the president — I’m sorry, please stop shaking your head again.”

“I was just asking a question, trying to get an answer, and I found myself trying to defend myself,” Ryan said Wednesday morning, adding that she asked simple and legitimate questions.

“At the end of the day, I’m a reporter. He’s a press secretary. We both have jobs to do,” she said. “And as an administration is calling us the enemy of the people, I guess we saw some of that thought process yesterday.”

When asked if she thought Spicer treated her and other women differently from other reporters, Ryan recalled a recent story in which he called a female Politico reporter an idiot.

“We are the press who is under attack. We are under attack by this administration,” she said. “It is about discrediting credible media.”

She did not explicitly say that Spicer has discriminated against her, but acknowledged there was "a pattern.”

She added that she is now “looking more closely thinking about what you’re saying about the issue of women.”

Ryan was then asked if she thought Spicer was attacking her personally.

“That’s a tough one,” she said, and then cited a former press secretary for the Clinton administration, who described the relationship between reporters and White House representatives as friendly and adversarial.

“I believe the friendly piece is gone now,” she added. “It is getting personal, but it should never get personal in that room.”

This is not the first time the Trump administration has made controversial comments about Ryan. During a press conference held by the president on Feb. 16, he asked Ryan if she was friends with the Congressional Black Caucus, and then asked her to set up a meeting with them.

Anti-Abortion Activists Who Secretly Filmed Planned Parenthood Charged With 15 Felonies

Bob Levey / AP

The anti-abortion activists who went undercover to create inflammatory, edited videos of Planned Parenthood have been charged with 15 crimes.

David Robert Daleiden and Sandra Susan Merritt are facing 15 felony counts of recording a confidential communication, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced on Tuesday. California law requires that all people involved in a recorded conversation consent to the recording.

"The right to privacy is a cornerstone of California’s Constitution, and a right that is foundational in a free democratic society,” Becerra said in a statement. “We will not tolerate the criminal recording of confidential conversations.”

Daleiden in 2015 released the videos through his group, the Center for Medical Progress, to accuse Planned Parenthood of illegally profiting off the sale of fetal tissue. Multiple investigations found those allegations to be untrue, but it kicked off a national debate surrounding abortion, almost leading to the shutdown of the US government. When a gunman later that year attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado, he said he was doing it so there'd be "no more baby body parts."

Daleiden and Merritt were previously charged in Texas, but the case was dropped after a grand jury missed a deadline.

In an email to BuzzFeed News, Daleiden said the real criminals are Planned Parenthood.

"These bogus charges from Planned Parenthood's political cronies are fake news," he said.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood said that more than a dozen investigations have shown the organization did nothing wrong, while the people behind the videos broke the law.

"The California Attorney General filing criminal charges sends a clear message that you cannot target women and you cannot target health care providers without consequences," said Mary Alice Carter of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "We look forward to justice being served."

According to California authorities, Daleiden and at least two others created fake California IDs to pose as representatives of a fictional fetal tissue procurement company. Between July 2014 and September 2015, Daleiden and Merritt met with healthcare providers while wearing concealed recording devices, authorities said. The videos created from those recordings were then posted online, and several of the healthcare providers began receiving death threats, authorities said.

Before filing the charges, investigators reviewed more than 2,300 video clips taken from Daleiden's home in Huntington Beach, California. Eight victims of confidential recording were identified in San Francisco, three in Los Angeles, and three in El Dorado County.

Daleiden added he still had more video from Planned Parenthood that has yet to be released — which, if it was recorded without consent, would also be against California law.

"I look forward to showing the entire world what is on our yet-unreleased video tapes of Planned Parenthood’s criminal baby body parts enterprise, in vindication of the First Amendment rights of all," he said.

Three storm chasers died Tuesday afternoon when their vehicles collided while pursuing a tornado in central Texas.

The crash occurred when a black Chevrolet Suburban drove through a stop sign near the town of Spur and slammed into a Jeep, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The drivers of both vehicles, as well as one passenger, were all declared dead at the scene.

The Weather Channel identified two of the victims as Kelley Williamson and Randy Yarnall, both contractors for the cable network.

"Kelley and Randy were beloved members of the weather community," the Weather Channel said in a statement. "We are saddened by this loss and our deepest sympathies go out to the families and loved ones of all involved."

Authorities identified the third victim, who was in the jeep, as Corbin Lee Jaeger, 25, of Peoria, Arizona, KCBD reported.

Texas DPS did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News requests for more information. However, CNN reported that both vehicles were pursuing a tornado at the time of the collision.

The crash occurred at about 3:30 pm, around the same time a tornado warning was issued for the area. Video shared Tuesday afternoon by KTXS showed a tornado touching down near Stamford, Texas, about 80 miles from Spur.

Utah Governor Signs Bill Requiring Doctors To Say Medical Abortions Are Reversible

Many doctors say this is inaccurate.

Aaron P. Bernstein / Reuters

A new law signed by Utah's Republican Gov. Gary Herbert would require doctors to tell pregnant women who chose to undergo medically-induced abortions that the abortion could be halted halfway through.

The bill claims a woman could continue her pregnancy successfully should she not take the second of the two Mifepristone pills that trigger a medical abortion, and instead take the hormone progesterone.

The only evidence of this working is based on a single, widely contested study of six women conducted in 2012 and described as "anecdotal" by doctors.

Herbert signed the Utah bill Saturday, two days before a similar bill passed by the Indiana House of Representatives was thrown out in the Senate without a vote. Members of Indiana Congress opposing the bill, including anti-abortion senators, expressed concern over giving women conflicting information about medical abortions.

The Utah bill will go into effect in May, unless it is challenged in court. A spokesperson for Herbert told BuzzFeed News that the governor would not comment on any laws until after he reached the bill-signing deadline Wednesday night.

“It’s very concerning that legislatures would be forcing doctors to say anything to a patient, but particularly forcing them to give information about a treatment that is completely unproven,” Daniel Grossman, a professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of California at San Francisco, told BuzzFeed News when the Indiana legislature was first introduced.

Co-sponsored the legislation Republican Utah Rep. Keven Stratton, told the Deseret News that the law intended to provide women with the information they need, and that he thought it had bi-partisan appeal. “If you’re pro-choice, I would say that it helps you be educated in making the choice,” Stratton said. “If you’re pro-life, it gives an opportunity to look at the options if a decision is made to reverse course.”

Starting in 2015, similar "abortion reversal" legislation has been introduced across the US. Arkansas and South Dakota signed them into law, and a bill is being considered in North Carolina. A similar bill was killed in a House committee in Colorado, and an abortion reversal law was repealed in Arizona in 2016 after Planned Parenthood challenged it in court.

Planned Parenthood did not immediately respond to requests about whether they will challenge the Utah law.

Nearly one third of women in the US seeking first trimester abortions choose medical abortions, that's about 2.8 million since the drug was approved in 2000. It is often favored due to the privacy of taking the pill in your own home rather than undergoing an invasive surgical abortion, and if often easier to access than abortion clinics, especially in medically underserved, rural areas.

To undergo a medical abortion a woman takes mifepristone, then a second drug called misoprostol a day and a half to three days later. The second pill opens up the cervix and causes the contractions of the uterus that expel the pregnancy.

Culture of Life Family Services / Via colfs.org

The study the laws are based on was conducted by George Delgado of the Culture of Life Family Services clinic, an anti-abortion clinic in California that calls itself the "flip-side to Planned Parenthood." The procedure to attempt to reverse an abortion involves injecting women who have taken the first pill with weekly doses of progesterone through the 12th week of pregnancy. Delgado’s 2012 study claimed that four out of six women who underwent the treatment brought their pregnancies to term.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) said in a release that there is no medically supported evidence that a drug-induced abortion can be interrupted, and that the 2012 study the laws rely on for their evidence was not conducted correctly.

"This paper describes a handful of experiences, these women received
varying regimens of injected progesterone, and this was not a controlled study," ACOG wrote. "Therefore it does not provide evidence that progesterone was responsible for the reported outcomes."

The group added that the study also received no oversight by a review board or an ethical review committee, and that progesterone can cause a number of unpleasant side effects. They suggested that should a woman change her mind about the abortion between the first and the second pill, she should just wait "to see what happens" instead of receiving injections.

Trump Keeps Taking Credit For Deals Struck While Obama Was President

Everything old is new again!

Ford's Michigan investment

Ford's Michigan investment

Alan Diaz / AP

Ford announced on Tuesday the company would invest $1.2 billion in three facilities in Michigan where it will build trucks and SUVs, and store electronic data.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to link the news to his efforts to increase manufacturing by automakers within the US.

"Big announcement by Ford today. Major investment to be made in three Michigan plants. Car companies coming back to U.S. JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!" he tweeted early Tuesday.

Presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway also heralded the news on Twitter, suggesting Trump deserved credit: "Two weeks after @POTUS met with auto execs...Ford plans ‘significant’ investments in 3 plants," she tweeted.

The problem? The investment announced on Tuesday actually stemmed from a 2015 deal negotiated between Ford and the United Auto Workers union.

Under that 2015 collective bargaining agreement, Ford committed itself to investing $9 billion in US plants with the expectation of creating or retaining 8,500 jobs across a number of states, including Michigan.

"The majority of what was announced today is part of the 2015 UAW contract," Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker told BuzzFeed News via email. "The $850 billion at Michigan Assembly Plant was part of the contract, as was the Romeo Engine Plant. The $200 million data center was not part of the UAW contract, but it wouldn’t be because there are no hourly jobs at the data center."

When asked if the White House did anything during a meeting with automakers that may have led to the Michigan announcement, press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters, "I think there's been some regulatory effort and some commitments on the regulatory efforts going forward in the future that I think may have played a role."

Felker also said that Ford reached out to the White House about its plans shortly before 8 a.m. ET — about 90 mins after Trump sent his tweet.

Before he was even inaugurated as president, Trump took credit for stopping Ford from moving to Mexico — but the automaker had no plans of shuttering the factory.

"Just got a call from my friend Bill Ford, Chairman of Ford, who advised me that he will be keeping the Lincoln plant in Kentucky - no Mexico," Trump tweeted on Nov. 17. "I worked hard with Bill Ford to keep the Lincoln plant in Kentucky. I owed it to the great State of Kentucky for their confidence in me!"

While Ford had been planning to move the production of its Lincoln MKC to Mexico, the company said its Louisville plant was not set to close, or even lose any jobs, because of the expanded production of another vehicle, the Ford Escape.

Instead, the Lincoln will now continue to be built in Kentucky. "We are encouraged that President-elect Trump and the new Congress will pursue policies that will improve US competitiveness and make it possible to keep production of this vehicle here in the United States,” a Ford statement from November said.
