Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, who is also an undocumented Philippine immigrant and an immigration reform activist, was detained Tuesday in Texas and is being held at a Border Patrol station.
Vargas traveled to McAllen, Texas last Wednesday to document the crisis of undocumented immigrants and participate in a three-day-long vigil spearheaded by United We Dream and the Minority Affairs Council.
After arriving in McAllen, Vargas quickly realized that it would be nearly impossible for him to leave the area unquestioned.
"In the last 24 hours I realize that, for an undocumented immigrant like me, getting out of a border town in Texas—by plane or by land—won't be easy," he wrote in Politico. "It might, in fact, be impossible."
Cristina Jimenez, the managing director for the immigrant youth-led network United We Dream, released a statement on Saturday in support of Vargas:
We stand with Jose Antonio as he's currently unable to leave McAllen for fear of being detained, but we also must remember what brought us to the region in the first place. As we've witnessed firsthand, there is an ongoing humanitarian crisis happening here.
