The election was open to everyone, but Duke the dog won the most votes from the town’s citizens.

"Last Thursday Duke won the election as honorary mayor for the year. He lives in Cormorant and pretty much everyone knows him," Tammy Odegarrd, of Cormorant, MN, told BuzzFeed over the phone.
The election for honorary mayor lasted five weeks and was for a fundraiser to benefit next year's "Cormorant Days," according to Tammy Odegarrd.
"He is an outside dog, loved by everyone in the town, and he is a regular at Cormorant Pub," which is near where his owners live and Odegarrd said that "regulars buy him a burger every time they come in."
He is even known to keep speed limits down on the highways in the township, according to Odegarrd, who said "people slow down when they see him walking next to the road because they know him."
