The officers are listed as being in “guarded” condition at a local hospital. Police, meanwhile, are looking for two suspects who fled on foot.
The officers were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where a spokesman said they were listed as being in "guarded" condition. He said the officers were being X-rayed and CAT scanned, but he did not know the full extent of their injuries.
The shooting was reported around 10:40 p.m. near East 188th Street and Tiebout Avenue in the Bronx.
An NYPD spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that one officer was shot in the arm, and the other was shot in the back. Both were expected to survive.
The officers were responding to reports of a robbery and were not targeted, the spokesperson added.
A police official told the New York Times that the officers were working in plainclothes as part of an anti-crime detail in the 46th Precinct.
The shooting occurred after the officers attempted to pull a suspect vehicle over, setting off a brief car chase that ended in a crash. At least one suspect fled the crash on foot after opening fire.
The NYPD official told the New York Times authorities were searching for two suspect.
It wasn't clear if either suspect was injured, and no description of assailants was immediately available.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the alleged shooter. The reward is standard anytime a New York City police officer is shot. Tipsters may call (800) COP-SHOT.
