Syed Farook was identified Wednesday by media outlets citing police and his brother-in-law as one of two suspects killed by authorities in a shootout after 14 people were fatally shot at a San Bernardino social services center.

Authorities said they had not pinned down a motive, but were continuing to investigate all possibilities. They said there was a dispute at the center, where a holiday event was taking place.

After the shooting, the suspects fled in a black SUV, police said. More than four hours later, authorities engaged in a shootout with a black SUV. Two suspects, a man and a woman, were killed in gunfire with police.

According to Transparent California, which publishes public employee salary information, Syed R. Farook was working as an Environmental Health Specialist II in 2014 for San Bernardino County.

That year, he earned a salary of $53,437 plus benefits.

Farhan Khan, who said his sister is married to Farook, said in a news conference that Farook worked for the health department. Khan added he had no independent confirmation from police that his brother-in-law was a suspect and was going off media reports citiing authorities.

Hussam Ayloush, the executive director of the LA chapter of the Council on American–Islamic Relations, said at a news conference that "the suspect and his wife are missing."

Khan said he and his family were in disbelief after hearing Farook was involved in the incident, and had no idea as to what his motivation might have been.

"I'm in shock that something like this could happen," Khan said. "I mean, I spoke to him a week ago."

Khan said he was speaking on behalf of his family, and wanted to offer condolences to the families of the victims.

"I cannot express how sad I am for what happened," he said. "I have no idea why he would do that. Why would he do something like this?"
