Thousands of thumbtacks have been found scattered at a dog park in Northern California over the course of several weeks, prompting police to step up patrols in an effort to catch the culprit.

Dog owners have picked up more than 3,000 tacks from the Ohlone Dog Park and a nearby creek in the town of Hercules. And each time they clear on area, the next day, the tacks have returned.

"They even found thumb tacks in the bowls for the water," Anthony Hayes, who brings his dog to the park, told NBC Bay Area.

Connie Van Putten, a Hercules reserve police officer, said the tacks appeared to be intentionally scattered at the popular park, “and what the purpose is we don’t know.”

So far, no pet injuries have been reported. However, due to the park’s proximity to a nearby school, there are concerns that a small child could also be injured.

With no witnesses to go on, police are considering setting up surveillance cameras to help catch the culprit. In the meantime, the public was asked to report suspicious activity at the park to Hercules police at (510) 724-1111.
