Fraternity Member Shot And Killed At New Jersey College

A Tau Kappa Epsilon member was killed in a shooting at the fraternity house at the NJ Institute of Technology in Newark on Monday.

The shooting occurred at the TKE house at 3:22 a.m. Monday, a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. The victim was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 5:02 a.m.

The university confirmed that the student was shot during a robbery at the fraternity house.

"I am saddened to inform you that the student shot early this morning during a robbery has died," NJIT President Joel Bloom said in a statement provided to BuzzFeed News. "This is a tragic time for the student's family, friends and the entire NJIT campus and we extend our thoughts and prayers to all affected."

There was no imminent threat to the campus which was open Monday, the university said. NJIT is offering a $10,000 reward for information that could lead to prosecuting the suspects involved in the shooting.

Officials are investigating the incident and did not provide details on the suspect(s). Police were looking for two men who fled on foot after the shooting, PIX11 reported.

The victim was not identified by authorities.

"We are still working to learn the details of what occurred and both the men at the Kappa-Eta chapter and International Headquarters will fully cooperate with the police investigation," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the member's friends and family."

NJIT did not immediately return BuzzFeed News' request for comment.
