A U.S. service member has been killed during combat near Irbil in Iraq, the Department of Defense has confirmed.

Speaking at a press conference in Germany Tuesday morning, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said it was "a combat death."

The defense secretary provided no further details but said the service member died “in the neighborhood of Irbil," according to the AP.

The Washington Post reported that the service member had been engaged in combat with ISIS forces when killed.

“A Coalition service member was killed in northern Iraq as a result of enemy fire,” the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement emailed to BuzzFeed News. “Further information will be released as appropriate.”

The statement said it would “defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

The is not the first time a U.S. soldier has died fighting ISIS in Iraq. in October, Master Sgt Joshua Wheeler, 39, died during a special forces raid near the city of Kirkuk.

And in March, another U.S. serviceman was killed by ISIS rocket fire outside Mosul. Several U.S. soldiers were also injured in that attack.
