Donald Trump is slated to outline his plans for immigration reform at a rally in Phoenix, just hours after meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto south of the border.
The speech, which scheduled for 6 p.m. local time, has been a highly anticipated after the Republican nominee indicated he might be open to "softening" his stance on immigration controls. He then later said he had not changed his mind on the strict proposals he promoted during his campaign.
Trump has said he wants to build a force to deport the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US. And a hallmark of his campaign has been his proposal to build a wall along the border and force Mexico to pay for it.
After meeting with Peña Nieto on Wednesday, Trump said the two discussed the wall, but not the issue of who would pay for it.
"We didn't discuss that," Trump told reporters.
However, Peña Nieto tweeted that the issue was indeed discussed at the beginning of the hour-long meeting, and that he told Trump Mexico would not pay for it.
Trump's campaign then issued a statement saying the two men "hold two different views on this issue."
