Numerous people are still missing following the fire at an Oakland venue.
Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed told the East Bay Times newspaper some 13 other people were still missing following the blaze in the venue in the city's Fruitvale district, which was hosting a party featuring the electronic band Golden Donna.
Firefighters were yet to do a full sweep of the building after the huge three-alarm fire and they expect the death toll may rise.
“We still have to do a more thorough search of the building and we don’t know the potential number of other victims,” Deloche-Reed said.
“This is a true loss for the city, for the firefighters who responded, and the people who lost family and friends. It's just tragic, a real tragedy,” she said.
Police told KTVU Fox 2 the building was a live-work space for artists and that approximately 50 people were in the building when the fire began around 11:30 p.m. local time.
Calls to the Oakland fire and police departments were not immediately returned.
On the event's Facebook page, people who attended the event posted frantic appeals for information on missing friends and loves ones.
"The building is on fire and it really looks bad. Please folks, check in and let us know you're ok," one person wrote.
