Cardell Hayes was convicted of manslaughter in the death of former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith and attempted manslaughter for Smith's wife, a jury ruled Sunday.

Smith was killed on April 10 after a minor three-car collision when he was shot eight times by Hayes. Smith's wife, Racquel Smith, was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds to the leg.

The jury found Hayes guilty of attempted manslaughter in the shooting of Racquel Smith, the Advocate reported.

The manslaughter charge carries up to 40 years and the attempted manslaughter charge carries a10 years, according to ESPN. The jury earlier dismissed a manslaughter charge which would have had a mandatory life sentence.

Racquel Smith recounted the details of her husband's last moments to the jury on Tuesday.

"My worst nightmare happened for no reason," she said to the jury, according to the Advocate. "He didn't have to do that to my baby ... and you know it. Or to me. I didn't do you anything for you to shoot me,” she said while looking at Hayes.
