Details about how exactly LaVoy Finicum, 54, died were not immediately available and a statement from the FBI merely said one person was killed and five others — including standoff leader Ammon Bundy — were arrested during a confrontation in which shots were fired.

However, Finicum's family confirmed his death Tuesday night. His Facebook page also was updated to say he was "murdered" while his "hands were in the air."

Finicum had been one of the most prominent participants in the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns Oregon.
