Two sheriffs deputies were shot dead Wednesday by a suspect near Baltimore, Maryland.

The two Harford County deputies were wounded during a morning shooting at an Abingdon, Maryland, restaurant, the Baltimore Sun reported. Both deputies later died from their injuries, sheriff's officials announced.

The two deputies were not immediately identified, but officials said they were both veterans of the department.

Police identified the suspect in the shooting as 67-year-old David Brian Evans, who is also dead.

The shooting happened after a deputy was called to the Abingdon Panera Bread shortly before noon. Sometime during that call, a man in the restaurant shot the deputy.

A sheriffs official said he believed the man shot the deputy "because he was wearing a uniform," the Associated Press reported. Witnesses also told the AP the suspected shooter looked disheveled and "sketchy."

Images posted to social media showed the scene of the shooting taped off, and ambulances in the area.
