The incident began on Sunday when prison officers noticed a large group of prisoners congregating in front of a housing unit, KETV reported.

The officers attempted to break up the group and a fight ensued, the station reported. Two officers and two inmates were injured.

The prisoners gained control of at least part of the facility, and several small fires broke out, the AP reported.

One inmate, Jeffrey Frank, reportedly called the Journal Star from inside the prison and claimed the prisoners were rioting because they wanted more access to the prison yard and jobs.

"We just want fairness," Frank told the newspaper. "We've got guards who don't know how to treat a person. We're in a prison, but we're human beings, too. ... They dog us out. The jobs. We want more jobs."

Frank said he had seen inmates get shot and there was a lot of blood.

"The ceilings are fallen. There's drywall on fire. There's cameras torn down," he said.

Prison officials told the AP the prison is now back in full control of officers, and they are investigating the deaths of the inmates.

The maximum-security prison about 60 miles from Lincoln is home to 11 death row inmates, according to the AP.

Prison officials didn't immediately return a request for comment from BuzzFeed News.
