An explosion this morning along the trail of a Marines charity run in New Jersey prompted a lockdown of the beach town when authorities found additional devices that had not yet detonated.
Nobody was injured in the incident, but thousands were expected to take part in the race.
The blast occurred around 9:35 a.m. in Seaside Park in New Jersey, Ocean County Prosecutor’s spokesperson Al Della Fave told local CNN affiliate Pix 11. Authorities quickly located as many as three explosives strung together inside a plastic trash can.
Della Fave said that there had been a delay in the start of the Seaside Semper Five, a 5k Marine Corps charity race, but that a device he described as a pipe bomb went off around the time runners were scheduled to pass that part of the route.
“It’s obvious that this was meant to affect the run,” Della Fave told News 12 in an interview aired on CNN.
Authorities later found an unattended backpack near the race path.
The charity organizers cancelled the event, and law enforcement placed the immediate area of Seaside Park on lockdown.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) have joined local police in the investigation, according to CNN.
BuzzFeed News has reached out to federal authorities and local police for more information.
