Donald Trump is going to the White House Thursday to meet with President Obama as part of the presidential transition process.
Trump will travel from New York to Washington, D.C., to with his wife, Melania, for the scheduled 11 a.m. meeting Obama and Michelle Obama.
Trump and the president will meet in the Oval Office. Melania and the first lady will meet in the White House residence.
There's plenty of speculation about how the meetings will go. Trump was the leading force behind an ugly, years-long conspiracy theory that President Obama wasn't born in the United States, and maintained it only until months before his election, when we finally admitted that was not the case.
On Wednesday, Obama said, "I had a chance to invite him to come to the White House tomorrow to talk about making sure that there is a successful transition between our presidencies.
"Now, it is no secret that the President-elect and I have some pretty significant differences. But remember, eight years ago, President Bush and I had some pretty significant differences. But President Bush’s team could not have been more professional or more gracious in making sure we had a smooth transition so that we could hit the ground running," Obama said. "So I have instructed my team to follow the example that President Bush’s team set eight years ago, and work as hard as we can to make sure that this is a successful transition for the President-elect."
Trump has said he thinks the meeting is "going to be, I think, very good."
On CNN Thursday, Rudy Giuliani, a top adviser to Trump, said, "I hate to use the word cordial, because it's used almost as a diplomatic term, you know, when people yell at each other you say they had a cordial meeting but I think you're going to see a very professionally run meeting between two men who actually have a lot of charm."
