A police officer in San Antonio, Texas, was shot and killed on Sunday morning when he was ambushed during a traffic stop outside the city's police headquarters, authorities said.

The officer was issuing a traffic ticket when when a person in a black vehicle pulled behind the squad car, walked towards the passenger's side of the police car, and shot the officer in the head, Chief William P. McManus said at an impromptu press conference.

The suspect then shot a second time, before fleeing the scene in a black vehicle. He remains on the run.

The officer was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The slain officer's identity was not released, but the chief described him as a 20-year veteran of the police force.

"This is everyone's worst nightmare," McManus said. "It's always difficult, especially in this day and age where police are being targeted across the country, and hopefully we'll solve this one real quick."

Chief McManus said investigators are looking for motives as well as video footage of the incident.

"We don't have a motive. There are a couple of different angles that we're looking it," McManus said.

The suspect, who is still at large, was described as a black male who is 5-foot-7-inches to 6-foot high, and was wearing a gray shirt and black pants.
