Pablo Picasso's 1955 cubist masterpiece "Les femmes d'Alger" (Version "O") smashed the world record for artwork sold at auction Monday, coming in at just under $180 million, Christie's announced.
The auction price includes a pre-sale commission, which according to CNBC was estimated at just over 12%, and other fees.
At $142.4 million, Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" triptych had held the record for the most expensive painting sold at auction.
The last time the Version "O" was featured at auction was in 1997, when it sold for $31.9 million, more than double what had been estimated.
