The officer was shot in the head Tuesday night while chasing a gunman in East Harlem. “This whole city is in mourning,” Mayor de Blasio said.
A New York Police Department officer died Tuesday night after being shot in the head as he and another officer chased a man, officials announced at a news conference.
The 33-year-old officer, Randolph Holder, was shot shortly before 9 p.m. near 120th Street and Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive after responding to reports that a man had a gun in the area. Holder chased a man on a bicycle for nearly 20 blocks along FDR Drive where he was shot.
Holder was rushed to Harlem Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Five blocks away at 125th Street, police found a man who was shot in the leg, and he was taken into custody as a person of interest.
Police helicopters and officers on the ground were seen scanning the area around East Harlem and East River after the incident. Officials also closed parts of FDR Drive between 120th and 125th Streets as part of the investigation.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William J. Bratton visited the hospital on Tuesday night before holding a late night press conference.
"We're all in mourning tonight," De Blasio said. "This whole city is in mourning."
Holder was a five-year veteran and was assigned to the department's Housing Bureau and patrolled public housing on the Upper East Side and Harlem.
Holder's father and grandfather were both police officers in Ghana, where his family immigrated from, Bratton said.
Holder's death marked the fourth New York police officer killed in the line of duty in the last 11 months.
"It's about as bad as it gets," Bratton said.
