The storm was about 200 miles from the Mexican coast Thursday evening and had grown to a Category 5 hurricane, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS reported that the storm was continuing to "explosively intensify" and could grow stronger still before likely weakening somewhat Friday.
The NWS called the storm's rapid growth Thursday "a remarkable feat," with only one other hurricane — Linda, in 1997 — intensifying so quickly during the satellite era.
