Joey Comunale.
Two men who were partying in New York City with a Connecticut man who went missing Sunday and was later discovered in a shallow grave in New Jersey have been charged with murder, police say.
On Wednesday, New York police found the body of Joey Comunale, 26, of Stamford, Connecticut, under 2 feet of dirt behind a florist shop in Oceanport, New Jersey.
On Sunday, Comunale reportedly attended a party at the apartment of James Rackover on the east side of Manhattan. He was last seen alive on building surveillance footage arriving at 418 East 59th Street on Sunday night.
On Thursday, Rackover, 25, and Lawrence Dilione, 28, another man who was at the party Sunday, were charged with second-degree murder, concealment of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence, the NYPD said.
The New York Daily News reported that on Monday morning, Rackover called the building’s office asking for a luggage cart. Shortly thereafter, Rackover and Dilione were seen on surveillance wheeling two large pieces of luggage out of the building.
After a two-day manhunt spanning three states, Comunale’s body was found. Police said he was stabbed 15 times and his body was burned.
James Rackover
The New York Post reported that Rackover’s apartment where police believe Comunale was stabbed to death is paid for by jeweler Jeffrey Rackover.
Jeffrey Rackover is well known for dealing in jewelry for the rich and famous. He once helped Donald Trump pick out an engagement ring for his wife Melania.
It was initially reported that James was Jeffrey's son, however, it is unclear what the relationship between the two actually is.
Private Detective Bo Dietl told the Post that the two met about three years ago and James became “the son that Jeffrey never had.” He said that Jeffrey helped James get a job and he eventually changed his last name to Rackover.
Police said that blood was found in James Rackover’s apartment and on his clothes. They said that it appears bleach was poured on the clothes to attempt to cover up the blood.
Rackover and Dilione are being held by the NYPD pending an arraignment on the charges.
