A US Navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers has crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan, the Navy's 7th Fleet says.
The aircraft was on its way to the USS Ronald Reagan, a nuclear-powered supercarrier operating in the Philippine Sea, when it went down southeast of Okinawa, a Japanese island in the East China Sea.
The 7th Fleet has not given a reason for the cause of the crash, but said that the USS Ronald Reagan is "conducting search and rescue operations".
"Personnel recovery is underway and their condition will be evaluated by USS Ronald Reagan medical staff," it said in a statement.
The incident marks the sixth time this year that the 7th Fleet has been involved in a crash.
Last week a the USS Benfold collided with a commercial tug boat in Japan's Sagami Bay, which had drifted towards the warship during a towing exercise.
Other recent incidences include the collision of the USS John S. McCain with a commercial vessel near Singapore in August and of the USS Fitzgerald with a Philippine-flagged container ship off the coast of Japan in June, which killed 10 and seven US sailors respectively.
