A 24-year-old Minnesota man shot by police over the weekend reportedly was taken off life support Monday as Black Lives Matter protesters shut down a Minneapolis interstate before dozens were arrested.
Jamar Clark was shot by police after officers were called to his apartment over reports of an assault. Bystanders said Clark was handcuffed when he was shot, sparking outrage in the community, but officers said that their preliminary investigation shows that wasn’t the case.
Monday night, multiple news outlets reported Clark had been taken off life support, according to a family member.
Hundreds of protesters shutdown Interstate 94 Monday evening as they marched between 7th Street and Broadway Ave., according to local NBC-affiliate KARE.
Around 8 p.m., police told the crowd that they had to leave the highway or face arrest.
Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Tiffani Schweigart said that 43 adults and 8 juveniles were arrested after being warned multiple times to leave the roadway.
Earlier Monday, Minneapolis officials said they have asked the Department of Justice to open a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting.
Mayor Betsy Hodges and Police Chief JaneƩ Harteau announced the request Monday at a press conference after the shooting sparked protests around the city.
“Everyone involved needs and deserves the truth,” Harteau said.
