President Barack Obama will mark the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Thursday with a late-afternoon speech in New Orleans crediting the city’s rebirth to its residents, local government and corporate leaders working together “to life up their communities and build back in ways that make them more innovative and positioned for economic growth,” according to the White House schedule.
White House Press Secretary John Earnest said that the president is expected to comment on the need for the government to be better prepared to respond to significant disasters like Hurricane Katrina.
The president will also meet with Mayor Mitch Landrieu and residents who have rebuilt their lives over the past ten years.
During his visit, his ninth trip to Louisiana as president, Obama will give a speech at the newly-opened Andrew P. Sanchez & Copelin-Byrd Multi Service Center in the Lower 9th Ward. The center, which cost $20.5 million and is equipped with a 25-meter swimming pool, according to the Times-Picayune, will replace the center destroyed during the hurricane.
In the afternoon the president and FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate will participate in a roundtable with local officials to discuss advancements in national preparedness, showcase the Gulf Coast’s resilience, and discuss ways to better plan for the future.
