Fewer Candidates Will Be On Stage At Tonight's Republican Debate

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee were bumped to Tuesday night’s “undercard” debate. BuzzFeed News’s McKay Coppins is reporting from the debate in Milwaukee.

  • The candidates for the GOP presidential nomination face off in their fourth debate on Tuesday night. It's in Milwaukee and sponsored by Fox Business and the Wall Street Journal. It begins at 9 p.m. ET.
  • The stage will be less crowded this time around as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee were bumped to Tuesday night's earlier "undercard" debate.
  • Fox Business has promised a debate on the issues, especially economic concerns. Candidates criticized the last debate for being too sensational.
  • Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson has gained significant ground on businessman Donald Trump, overtaking him in some polls.
  • Carson, though, has drawn scrutiny for some of his past statements — especially his saying he was offered a free scholarship to West Point. Expect the moderators and/or other candidates to question him on those points.
  • Also look for increased tension between former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and his former protégé, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. They sparred last debate, and now reports have emerged that Bush could run highly critical ads against the person he politically mentored.
  • The main debate will feature Trump, Carson, Rubio, Bush, former HP CEO Carly Fiorina, Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
  • The undercard debate will feature Christie, Huckabee, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. Former New York Gov. George Pataki and Sen. Lindsey Graham were bumped from both debates due to low poll numbers.
