Gunfire and flames erupted in Staten Island after a gunman reportedly set his house on fire while cops were trying to execute an arrest warrant just before 6 a.m. Friday.
Garland Tyree, 38, has fired at cops and fireman four times, striking an FDNY Lieutenant twice, once in the right buttocks and once in his left calf. Tyree remains barricaded in the apartment alone and is believed to be armed with an assault rifle, Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said in a press conference.
The firefighter, who has yet to be identified, was transported to Richmond University Medical Center where he remains in stable condition, a FDNY spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. Mayor de Blasio was headed to the hospital to check on the firefighter, whose identity has not yet been released, Friday morning.
Tyree has 18 prior arrests and was released from prison July 2014. He was wanted for violating the conditions of his probation and was known to the NYPD as Bloods gang member.
The suspect remains in the house, and NYPD officers have been in contact with him since 7:40 a.m., Boyce said in a press conference.
At approximately 7 a.m. ET the suspect posted this ominous message to his Facebook page.
