A police officer in Toledo, Ohio shot a man on Wednesday night after the suspect killed a police dog in the line of duty, the Toledo Blade reported.
The shooting took place during a foot chase of two unidentified suspects who were believed to have stolen a car, police told the newspaper. As the suspects ran into an abandoned house, one of them shot the German shepherd named Flaco, killing him. A police officer then returned fire.
The officers later apprehended one of the suspects. The other assailant was found dead inside the house. On Thursday, it remained unclear whether the suspect had died from a self-inflicted wound or from a police bullet, police told the Blade.
Flaco is believed to be the first K-9 police dog to have died in the line of duty in Toledo, the newspaper reported.
"We just lost a police officer," Toledo Police Chief George Kral said. "That dog is a police officer. We're taking it hard."
The Toledo Police Department told BuzzFeed News nobody was available to answer questions about the dog or the incident.
