The suspect, who was not immediately identified, died at the scene, San Bernardino Sheriff's Deputy Olivia Bozek told BuzzFeed News.

The high-speed pursuit began when deputies tried to pull over a man wanted on suspicion of a previously reported home-invasion robbery, Bozek said. But the man refused to pull over, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.

The ensuing chase wound through the cities of Fontana and San Bernardino before the man headed south on the northbound 215 Freeway.

At one point, the man jumped out of his moving SUV and fled on foot. The SUV, meanwhile, continued moving down the road, crashing into another vehicle, Bozek said.

The suspect was shot by a deputy in a department helicopter overhead that was tracking the chase, Bozek said. The deputy decided to shoot to avoid any further injury to people in the area.

Sheriff's officials would not say if the shots were fired before or after the man jumped out of the SUV, but images from reporters at the scene showed bullet holes in the vehicle.
