A tour vehicle of college students on orientation crashed into a charter bus.
About 50 people were being evaluated by emergency responders – at least 44 people were hospitalized, Sue Stangle, a spokesperson for the Seattle Fire Department, told local media in a briefing shortly after the crash.
The Ride The Ducks bus, or "duck boat," was carrying around 45 international students and their professors from the University of Seattle on an orientation trip, as well as a number of other tourists, KOMO news reported.
Fifteen people had mild injuries , Stangle said. About 30 people deemed "walking injured" by EMT. At least one pregnant woman was involved in the crash, a nurse told local media.
The most injuries occurred in the smaller Bel Air charter bus, Stangle said.
Many of the tourists managed to extract themselves from the wreckage before the fire department arrived. Ninety firefighters responded to the scene. It is not yet known what caused the crash.
Witnesses report the duck boat lost control, swerving into the charter bus. Ride the Ducks owner told the Seattle Times that the driver of the duck boat was injured.
Seattle Fire Department Chief said that two private vehicles were also involved in the crash. The Aurora bridge, the scene of the accident, remains closed until further notice, affecting traffic around Seattle.
