Bomb Threats To Jewish Centers Were Made Using "Spoofing" And Voice-Masking Technology

Federal investigators believe that the latest wave of bomb threats against Jewish centers and schools around the country were a coordinated attack perpetrated using “spoofing” technology, according to a liaison to the Jewish community who spoke with FBI investigators.

Paul Goldenberg, the national director for Secure Community Network, a homeland security initiative focused on the Jewish community, told BuzzFeed News that those responsible “are leveraging technologies that have made the investigation more challenging.”

Goldenberg said that investigators determined that some people calling in threats were using “spoofing,” a tactic where a call appears to come from a friendly or known source when it is in fact coming from somebody else.

CBS News first reported Monday that law enforcement officials believe that the attacks were a coordinated effort. However, a law enforcement official told the New York Times on Tuesday that a single person may be responsible for the threats.

He further added the perpetrator used “voice masking technology.”

In one threat that targeted the David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie, Florida, CBS Miami reported that police said that someone who sounded like woman with an altered voice called the front office and said a bomb would go off in "ten minutes to three hours."

Goldenberg said the SCN has been “working 24/7” with the FBI since the threats started and he has been in regular contact with the FBI about the investigation.

On Monday, bomb threats were called into 30 Jewish community centers and schools in at least 18 states, adding to a growing list of anti-Semitic incidents across the US this year. So far, nobody has been injured.

Authorities confirmed reports of threats on Monday in Alaska, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Michigan, Alabama, Maryland, Indiana, Virginia, Connecticut, Rhode Island, California, Arizona, Washington, and Nevada. No injuries were reported, and the threats came in the form of a series of phone calls Monday morning, then again Monday evening.

The San Francisco office of the Anti-Defamation League also received a bomb threat Monday afternoon. It was evacuated, and police shut down a section of busy Market Street to investigate.

There have been five waves of called in bomb threats so far this year, according to the Jewish Community Center Association, totaling 100 incidents at 81 locations in 33 states and two Canadian provinces.

Goldenberg and other researchers tracking these incidents say that the numbers seen this year so far are unprecedented.

"The short answer is we haven’t seen anything like this in the past,” Mark Potok, senior fellow at Southern Poverty Law Center, told BuzzFeed News. "This is my eighteenth year here and i haven’t seen anything remotely like this"

“You can't even compare it,” Goldenberg said. “I have been in business for two decades, and we have never seen a number at this level in a short period of time.”

The FBI and the Justice Department Civil Rights Division said that they are investigating the threats as possible civil rights violations.

“The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence, and will ensure this matter is investigated in a fair, thorough, and impartial manner. As this is matter is ongoing, we are not able to comment further at this time,” an FBI spokesperson said.

Asked about the recent wave of anti-Semitic attacks and threats across the nation, President Trump on Tuesday told a group of state attorneys general that "sometimes it's the reverse," according to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro who attended the meeting.

"He just said, 'Sometimes it's the reverse, to make people — or to make others — look bad,' and he used the word 'reverse' I would say two to three times in his comments," Shapiro said. "He did correctly say at the top that it was reprehensible."

Asked for further information about the purpose of the president's comments, Shapiro only said, "I really don't know what he means, or why he said that,” adding that Trump said he would be speaking about the issue in his remarks to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.

Saying that he hoped to see clarification from the president in those remarks, Shapiro added, "It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.”

Later, in his national speech, Trump said, "Recent threats targeting Jewish Community Centers and vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, as well as last week's shooting in Kansas City, remind us that while we may be a Nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms." (The shooting took place outside Kansas City.)

White House spokespeople did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump Condemned Bomb Threats And The "Shooting In Kansas City" During His Big Speech

Donald Trump began his first major address as president Tuesday night by condemning recent incidents of hate around the nation.

“Tonight, as we mark the conclusion of our celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded of our nation's path toward civil rights and the work that still remains,” Trump said at the top of his nationally-televised remarks. “Recent threats targeting Jewish Community Centers and vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, as well as last week's shooting in Kansas City, remind us that while we may be a Nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms.”

On Monday, bomb threats were called into 30 Jewish community centers and schools in at least 18 states, bringing the total number of anti-Semitic threats across the US and Canada this year to 100.

Trump has been criticized for not addressing the attacks head-on.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump suggested the bomb threats might have been “to make people — or to make others — look bad" and added "sometimes it's the reverse," according to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro.

“He just said, ‘Sometimes it’s the reverse, to make people — or to make others — look bad,’ and he used the word ‘reverse’ I would say two to three times in his comments,” Shapiro said. “He did correctly say at the top that it was reprehensible.”

The FBI says that it is investigating the bomb threats for possible civil rights violations.

Trump’s mention during Tuesday’s speech of a “shooting in Kansas City” actually references a shooting that happened last Wednesday, Feb. 24 in Olathe, Kansas — about 31 miles from Kansas City.

Adam Purinton has been charged in the shooting of two Indian men, one of whom died during the attack, who the 51-year-old reportedly told “get out of my country” before opening fire. A third man was shot after trying to subdue the shooter and suffered nonfatal injuries.

Later that night, Purinton was apprehended after fleeing 80-miles to a Missouri Applebee’s restaurant, where he confessed to the shooting. He also told the bartender, according to her 911 call, that he thought the two Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, were Iranians.

Trump and the White House were slow to condemn the incident, telling the press that it was too early to pass judgment on what Purinton’s motive was in the attack.

The FBI announced Tuesday that it is officially looking at the shooting as a hate crime.

Here Is The Complete Text Of President Trump's First Address To Congress

Jim Lo Scalzo / AP

President Donald Trump delivered his first address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.

The following is his speech as prepared:

"Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, the First Lady of the United States, and Citizens of America:

Tonight, as we mark the conclusion of our celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded of our Nation's path toward civil rights and the work that still remains. Recent threats targeting Jewish Community Centers and vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, as well as last week's shooting in Kansas City, remind us that while we may be a Nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms.

Each American generation passes the torch of truth, liberty and justice –- in an unbroken chain all the way down to the present.

That torch is now in our hands. And we will use it to light up the world. I am here tonight to deliver a message of unity and strength, and it is a message deeply delivered from my heart.

A new chapter of American Greatness is now beginning.

A new national pride is sweeping across our Nation.

And a new surge of optimism is placing impossible dreams firmly within our grasp.

What we are witnessing today is the Renewal of the American Spirit.

Our allies will find that America is once again ready to lead.

All the nations of the world -- friend or foe -- will find that America is strong, America is proud, and America is free.

In 9 years, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of our founding -- 250 years since the day we declared our Independence.

It will be one of the great milestones in the history of the world.

But what will America look like as we reach our 250th year? What kind of country will we leave for our children?

I will not allow the mistakes of recent decades past to define the course of our future.

For too long, we've watched our middle class shrink as we've exported our jobs and wealth to foreign countries.

We've financed and built one global project after another, but ignored the fates of our children in the inner cities of Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit -- and so many other places throughout our land.

We've defended the borders of other nations, while leaving our own borders wide open, for anyone to cross -- and for drugs to pour in at a now unprecedented rate.

And we've spent trillions of dollars overseas, while our infrastructure at home has so badly crumbled.

Then, in 2016, the earth shifted beneath our feet. The rebellion started as a quiet protest, spoken by families of all colors and creeds -– families who just wanted a fair shot for their children, and a fair hearing for their concerns.

But then the quiet voices became a loud chorus -- as thousands of citizens now spoke out together, from cities small and large, all across our country.

Finally, the chorus became an earthquake – and the people turned out by the tens of millions, and they were all united by one very simple, but crucial demand, that America must put its own citizens first ... because only then, can we truly MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.

Dying industries will come roaring back to life. Heroic veterans will get the care they so desperately need.

Our military will be given the resources its brave warriors so richly deserve.

Crumbling infrastructure will be replaced with new roads, bridges, tunnels, airports and railways gleaming across our beautiful land.

Our terrible drug epidemic will slow down and ultimately, stop.

And our neglected inner cities will see a rebirth of hope, safety, and opportunity.

Above all else, we will keep our promises to the American people.

It's been a little over a month since my inauguration, and I want to take this moment to update the Nation on the progress I've made in keeping those promises.

Since my election, Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors, Sprint, Softbank, Lockheed, Intel, Walmart, and many others, have announced that they will invest billions of dollars in the United States and will create tens of thousands of new American jobs.

The stock market has gained almost three trillion dollars in value since the election on November 8th, a record. We've saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars by bringing down the price of the fantastic new F-35 jet fighter, and will be saving billions more dollars on contracts all across our Government. We have placed a hiring freeze on non-military and non-essential Federal workers.

We have begun to drain the swamp of government corruption by imposing a 5 year ban on lobbying by executive branch officials –- and a lifetime ban on becoming lobbyists for a foreign government.

We have undertaken a historic effort to massively reduce job‑crushing regulations, creating a deregulation task force inside of every Government agency; imposing a new rule which mandates that for every 1 new regulation, 2 old regulations must be eliminated; and stopping a regulation that threatens the future and livelihoods of our great coal miners.

We have cleared the way for the construction of the Keystone and Dakota Access Pipelines -- thereby creating tens of thousands of jobs -- and I've issued a new directive that new American pipelines be made with American steel.

We have withdrawn the United States from the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership.

With the help of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, we have formed a Council with our neighbors in Canada to help ensure that women entrepreneurs have access to the networks, markets and capital they need to start a business and live out their financial dreams.

To protect our citizens, I have directed the Department of Justice to form a Task Force on Reducing Violent Crime.

I have further ordered the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice, along with the Department of State and the Director of National Intelligence, to coordinate an aggressive strategy to dismantle the criminal cartels that have spread across our Nation.

We will stop the drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth -- and we will expand treatment for those who have become so badly addicted.

At the same time, my Administration has answered the pleas of the American people for immigration enforcement and border security. By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions of dollars, and make our communities safer for everyone. We want all Americans to succeed –- but that can't happen in an environment of lawless chaos. We must restore integrity and the rule of law to our borders.

For that reason, we will soon begin the construction of a great wall along our southern border. It will be started ahead of schedule and, when finished, it will be a very effective weapon against drugs and crime.

As we speak, we are removing gang members, drug dealers and criminals that threaten our communities and prey on our citizens. Bad ones are going out as I speak tonight and as I have promised.

To any in Congress who do not believe we should enforce our laws, I would ask you this question: what would you say to the American family that loses their jobs, their income, or a loved one, because America refused to uphold its laws and defend its borders?

Our obligation is to serve, protect, and defend the citizens of the United States. We are also taking strong measures to protect our Nation from Radical Islamic Terrorism.

According to data provided by the Department of Justice, the vast majority of individuals convicted for terrorism-related offenses since 9/11 came here from outside of our country. We have seen the attacks at home -– from Boston to San Bernardino to the Pentagon and yes, even the World Trade Center.

We have seen the attacks in France, in Belgium, in Germany and all over the world.

It is not compassionate, but reckless, to allow uncontrolled entry from places where proper vetting cannot occur. Those given the high honor of admission to the United States should support this country and love its people and its values.

We cannot allow a beachhead of terrorism to form inside America -- we cannot allow our Nation to become a sanctuary for extremists.

That is why my Administration has been working on improved vetting procedures, and we will shortly take new steps to keep our Nation safe -- and to keep out those who would do us harm.

As promised, I directed the Department of Defense to develop a plan to demolish and destroy ISIS -- a network of lawless savages that have slaughtered Muslims and Christians, and men, women, and children of all faiths and beliefs. We will work with our allies, including our friends and allies in the Muslim world, to extinguish this vile enemy from our planet.

I have also imposed new sanctions on entities and individuals who support Iran's ballistic missile program, and reaffirmed our unbreakable alliance with the State of Israel.

Finally, I have kept my promise to appoint a Justice to the United States Supreme Court -- from my list of 20 judges -- who will defend our Constitution. I am honored to have Maureen Scalia with us in the gallery tonight. Her late, great husband, Antonin Scalia, will forever be a symbol of American justice. To fill his seat, we have chosen Judge Neil Gorsuch, a man of incredible skill, and deep devotion to the law. He was confirmed unanimously to the Court of Appeals, and I am asking the Senate to swiftly approve his nomination.

Tonight, as I outline the next steps we must take as a country, we must honestly acknowledge the circumstances we inherited.

Ninety-four million Americans are out of the labor force.

Over 43 million people are now living in poverty, and over 43 million Americans are on food stamps.

More than 1 in 5 people in their prime working years are not working.

We have the worst financial recovery in 65 years.

In the last 8 years, the past Administration has put on more new debt than nearly all other Presidents combined.

We've lost more than one-fourth of our manufacturing jobs since NAFTA was approved, and we've lost 60,000 factories since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001.

Our trade deficit in goods with the world last year was nearly $800 billion dollars.

And overseas, we have inherited a series of tragic foreign policy disasters.

Solving these, and so many other pressing problems, will require us to work past the differences of party. It will require us to tap into the American spirit that has overcome every challenge throughout our long and storied history.

But to accomplish our goals at home and abroad, we must restart the engine of the American economy -- making it easier for companies to do business in the United States, and much harder for companies to leave.

Right now, American companies are taxed at one of the highest rates anywhere in the world.

My economic team is developing historic tax reform that will reduce the tax rate on our companies so they can compete and thrive anywhere and with anyone. At the same time, we will provide massive tax relief for the middle class.

We must create a level playing field for American companies and workers.

Currently, when we ship products out of America, many other countries make us pay very high tariffs and taxes -- but when foreign companies ship their products into America, we charge them almost nothing.

I just met with officials and workers from a great American company, Harley-Davidson. In fact, they proudly displayed five of their magnificent motorcycles, made in the USA, on the front lawn of the White House.

At our meeting, I asked them, how are you doing, how is business? They said that it's good. I asked them further how they are doing with other countries, mainly international sales. They told me -- without even complaining because they have been mistreated for so long that they have become used to it -- that it is very hard to do business with other countries because they tax our goods at such a high rate. They said that in one case another country taxed their motorcycles at 100 percent.

They weren't even asking for change. But I am.

I believe strongly in free trade but it also has to be FAIR TRADE.

The first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, warned that the "abandonment of the protective policy by the American Government [will] produce want and ruin among our people."

Lincoln was right -- and it is time we heeded his words. I am not going to let America and its great companies and workers, be taken advantage of anymore.

I am going to bring back millions of jobs. Protecting our workers also means reforming our system of legal immigration. The current, outdated system depresses wages for our poorest workers, and puts great pressure on taxpayers.

Nations around the world, like Canada, Australia and many others –- have a merit-based immigration system. It is a basic principle that those seeking to enter a country ought to be able to support themselves financially. Yet, in America, we do not enforce this rule, straining the very public resources that our poorest citizens rely upon. According to the National Academy of Sciences, our current immigration system costs America's taxpayers many billions of dollars a year.

Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based system, will have many benefits: it will save countless dollars, raise workers' wages, and help struggling families –- including immigrant families –- enter the middle class.

I believe that real and positive immigration reform is possible, as long as we focus on the following goals: to improve jobs and wages for Americans, to strengthen our nation’s security, and to restore respect for our laws.

If we are guided by the well-being of American citizens then I believe Republicans and Democrats can work together to achieve an outcome that has eluded our country for decades.

Another Republican President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, initiated the last truly great national infrastructure program –- the building of the interstate highway system. The time has come for a new program of national rebuilding.

America has spent approximately six trillion dollars in the Middle East, all this while our infrastructure at home is crumbling. With this six trillion dollars we could have rebuilt our country –- twice. And maybe even three times if we had people who had the ability to negotiate.

To launch our national rebuilding, I will be asking the Congress to approve legislation that produces a $1 trillion investment in the infrastructure of the United States -- financed through both public and private capital –- creating millions of new jobs.

This effort will be guided by two core principles: Buy American, and Hire American.

Tonight, I am also calling on this Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare with reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time, provide better Healthcare.

Mandating every American to buy government-approved health insurance was never the right solution for America. The way to make health insurance available to everyone is to lower the cost of health insurance, and that is what we will do.

Obamacare premiums nationwide have increased by double and triple digits. As an example, Arizona went up 116 percent last year alone. Governor Matt Bevin of Kentucky just said Obamacare is failing in his State -- it is unsustainable and collapsing.

One third of counties have only one insurer on the exchanges –- leaving many Americans with no choice at all.

Remember when you were told that you could keep your doctor, and keep your plan?

We now know that all of those promises have been broken.

Obamacare is collapsing –- and we must act decisively to protect all Americans. Action is not a choice –- it is a necessity.

So I am calling on all Democrats and Republicans in the Congress to work with us to save Americans from this imploding Obamacare disaster.

Here are the principles that should guide the Congress as we move to create a better healthcare system for all Americans:

First, we should ensure that Americans with pre-existing conditions have access to coverage, and that we have a stable transition for Americans currently enrolled in the healthcare exchanges.

Secondly, we should help Americans purchase their own coverage, through the use of tax credits and expanded Health Savings Accounts –- but it must be the plan they want, not the plan forced on them by the Government.

Thirdly, we should give our great State Governors the resources and flexibility they need with Medicaid to make sure no one is left out.

Fourthly, we should implement legal reforms that protect patients and doctors from unnecessary costs that drive up the price of insurance – and work to bring down the artificially high price of drugs and bring them down immediately.

Finally, the time has come to give Americans the freedom to purchase health insurance across State lines –- creating a truly competitive national marketplace that will bring cost way down and provide far better care.

Everything that is broken in our country can be fixed. Every problem can be solved. And every hurting family can find healing, and hope.

Our citizens deserve this, and so much more –- so why not join forces to finally get it done? On this and so many other things, Democrats and Republicans should get together and unite for the good of our country, and for the good of the American people.

My administration wants to work with members in both parties to make childcare accessible and affordable, to help ensure new parents have paid family leave, to invest in women's health, and to promote clean air and clear water, and to rebuild our military and our infrastructure.

True love for our people requires us to find common ground, to advance the common good, and to cooperate on behalf of every American child who deserves a brighter future.

An incredible young woman is with us this evening who should serve as an inspiration to us all.

Today is Rare Disease day, and joining us in the gallery is a Rare Disease Survivor, Megan Crowley. Megan was diagnosed with Pompe Disease, a rare and serious illness, when she was 15 months old. She was not expected to live past 5.

On receiving this news, Megan's dad, John, fought with everything he had to save the life of his precious child. He founded a company to look for a cure, and helped develop the drug that saved Megan's life. Today she is 20 years old -- and a sophomore at Notre Dame.

Megan's story is about the unbounded power of a father's love for a daughter.

But our slow and burdensome approval process at the Food and Drug Administration keeps too many advances, like the one that saved Megan's life, from reaching those in need.

If we slash the restraints, not just at the FDA but across our Government, then we will be blessed with far more miracles like Megan.

In fact, our children will grow up in a Nation of miracles.

But to achieve this future, we must enrich the mind –- and the souls –- of every American child.

Education is the civil rights issue of our time.

I am calling upon Members of both parties to pass an education bill that funds school choice for disadvantaged youth, including millions of African-American and Latino children. These families should be free to choose the public, private, charter, magnet, religious or home school that is right for them.

Joining us tonight in the gallery is a remarkable woman, Denisha Merriweather. As a young girl, Denisha struggled in school and failed third grade twice. But then she was able to enroll in a private center for learning, with the help of a tax credit scholarship program. Today, she is the first in her family to graduate, not just from high school, but from college. Later this year she will get her masters degree in social work.

We want all children to be able to break the cycle of poverty just like Denisha.

But to break the cycle of poverty, we must also break the cycle of violence.

The murder rate in 2015 experienced its largest single-year increase in nearly half a century.

In Chicago, more than 4,000 people were shot last year alone –- and the murder rate so far this year has been even higher.

This is not acceptable in our society.

Every American child should be able to grow up in a safe community, to attend a great school, and to have access to a high-paying job.

But to create this future, we must work with –- not against -– the men and women of law enforcement.

We must build bridges of cooperation and trust –- not drive the wedge of disunity and division.

Police and sheriffs are members of our community. They are friends and neighbors, they are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters – and they leave behind loved ones every day who worry whether or not they'll come home safe and sound.

We must support the incredible men and women of law enforcement.

And we must support the victims of crime.

I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create an office to serve American Victims. The office is called VOICE –- Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement. We are providing a voice to those who have been ignored by our media, and silenced by special interests.

Joining us in the audience tonight are four very brave Americans whose government failed them.

Their names are Jamiel Shaw, Susan Oliver, Jenna Oliver, and Jessica Davis.

Jamiel's 17-year-old son was viciously murdered by an illegal immigrant gang member, who had just been released from prison. Jamiel Shaw Jr. was an incredible young man, with unlimited potential who was getting ready to go to college where he would have excelled as a great quarterback. But he never got the chance. His father, who is in the audience tonight, has become a good friend of mine.

Also with us are Susan Oliver and Jessica Davis. Their husbands –- Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver and Detective Michael Davis –- were slain in the line of duty in California. They were pillars of their community. These brave men were viciously gunned down by an illegal immigrant with a criminal record and two prior deportations.

Sitting with Susan is her daughter, Jenna. Jenna: I want you to know that your father was a hero, and that tonight you have the love of an entire country supporting you and praying for you.

To Jamiel, Jenna, Susan and Jessica: I want you to know –- we will never stop fighting for justice. Your loved ones will never be forgotten, we will always honor their memory.

Finally, to keep America Safe we must provide the men and women of the United States military with the tools they need to prevent war and –- if they must –- to fight and to win.

I am sending the Congress a budget that rebuilds the military, eliminates the Defense sequester, and calls for one of the largest increases in national defense spending in American history.

My budget will also increase funding for our veterans.

Our veterans have delivered for this Nation –- and now we must deliver for them.

The challenges we face as a Nation are great. But our people are even greater.

And none are greater or braver than those who fight for America in uniform.

We are blessed to be joined tonight by Carryn Owens, the widow of a U.S. Navy Special Operator, Senior Chief William "Ryan" Owens. Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero –- battling against terrorism and securing our Nation.

I just spoke to General Mattis, who reconfirmed that, and I quote, "Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies." Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity. For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom –- we will never forget him.

To those allies who wonder what kind of friend America will be, look no further than the heroes who wear our uniform.

Our foreign policy calls for a direct, robust and meaningful engagement with the world. It is American leadership based on vital security interests that we share with our allies across the globe.

We strongly support NATO, an alliance forged through the bonds of two World Wars that dethroned fascism, and a Cold War that defeated communism.

But our partners must meet their financial obligations.

And now, based on our very strong and frank discussions, they are beginning to do just that.

We expect our partners, whether in NATO, in the Middle East, or the Pacific –- to take a direct and meaningful role in both strategic and military operations, and pay their fair share of the cost.

We will respect historic institutions, but we will also respect the sovereign rights of nations.

Free nations are the best vehicle for expressing the will of the people –- and America respects the right of all nations to chart their own path. My job is not to represent the world. My job is to represent the United States of America. But we know that America is better off, when there is less conflict -- not more.

We must learn from the mistakes of the past –- we have seen the war and destruction that have raged across our world.

The only long-term solution for these humanitarian disasters is to create the conditions where displaced persons can safely return home and begin the long process of rebuilding.

America is willing to find new friends, and to forge new partnerships, where shared interests align. We want harmony and stability, not war and conflict.

We want peace, wherever peace can be found. America is friends today with former enemies. Some of our closest allies, decades ago, fought on the opposite side of these World Wars. This history should give us all faith in the possibilities for a better world.

Hopefully, the 250th year for America will see a world that is more peaceful, more just and more free.

On our 100th anniversary, in 1876, citizens from across our Nation came to Philadelphia to celebrate America's centennial. At that celebration, the country's builders and artists and inventors showed off their creations.

Alexander Graham Bell displayed his telephone for the first time.

Remington unveiled the first typewriter. An early attempt was made at electric light.

Thomas Edison showed an automatic telegraph and an electric pen.

Imagine the wonders our country could know in America's 250th year.

Think of the marvels we can achieve if we simply set free the dreams of our people.

Cures to illnesses that have always plagued us are not too much to hope.

American footprints on distant worlds are not too big a dream.

Millions lifted from welfare to work is not too much to expect.

And streets where mothers are safe from fear -- schools where children learn in peace -- and jobs where Americans prosper and grow -- are not too much to ask.

When we have all of this, we will have made America greater than ever before. For all Americans.

This is our vision. This is our mission.

But we can only get there together.

We are one people, with one destiny.

We all bleed the same blood.

We all salute the same flag.

And we are all made by the same God.

And when we fulfill this vision; when we celebrate our 250 years of glorious freedom, we will look back on tonight as when this new chapter of American Greatness began.

The time for small thinking is over. The time for trivial fights is behind us.

We just need the courage to share the dreams that fill our hearts.

The bravery to express the hopes that stir our souls.

And the confidence to turn those hopes and dreams to action.

From now on, America will be empowered by our aspirations, not burdened by our fears –-

inspired by the future, not bound by the failures of the past –-

and guided by our vision, not blinded by our doubts.

I am asking all citizens to embrace this Renewal of the American Spirit. I am asking all members of Congress to join me in dreaming big, and bold and daring things for our country. And I am asking everyone watching tonight to seize this moment and --

Believe in yourselves.

Believe in your future.

And believe, once more, in America.

Thank you, God bless you, and God Bless these United States."

On January 7, the Islamic Center of Lake Travis, in Austin, Texas, which had been under construction, caught on fire. A week later, on January 14, the Islamic Center of Eastside, in Bellevue, Washington, burned.

Two weeks after that, on January 27, several hours after President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, a fire destroyed the Islamic Center of Victoria, in Texas.

Then, this past Friday, February 24, a small blaze broke out at the front entrance of the Daarus Salaam Mosque, near Tampa, Florida.

Authorities have ruled that three of the four fires were caused by arson. An official at the Travis County Fire Marshal told BuzzFeed News that the investigation into the cause of the fire at the Islamic Center of Lake Travis remains open.

“We’ve never seen four mosques burned within seven weeks of each other,” said Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups around the country. “It’s part of a whole series of dramatic attacks on Muslims.”

The mosque fires come amid increased fear about hate crimes against minority religious groups. In recent weeks, scores of bomb threats were called into Jewish community centers and schools around the country and graveyards in Jewish cemeteries in three states were vandalized. On Sunday, somebody threw a rock through a window of the Masjid Abu Bakr mosque in Denver. In Redmond, Washington, vandals destroyed the Muslim Association of Puget Sound mosque’s entrance sign on two occasions within months of the election. In January, a white nationalist fatally shot six people at a mosque in Quebec City, Canada.

"The short answer is we haven’t seen anything like this in the past,” Potok said, referring to the overall surge in reported hate crimes. "This is my 18th year here and I haven’t seen anything remotely like this."

To have three mosque fires ruled arson within six weeks is highly unusual, said Corey Saylor, director of the Department to Monitor and Combat Islamophobia at the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “In normal times, I will see one to two mosque incidents of any type per month, and rarely is it arson,” he said. “I can tell you for sure I have not seen levels of violence like this since I started tracking this stuff” in 2009.

The fire at the Islamic Center of Lake Travis — which nearly two months later is still under investigation — destroyed the partially constructed frame. Community members had begun raising funds for the building four years earlier.

“There are a lot more people who are in support of us building this back again than people who oppose us but it takes one crazy guy to do something,” Shakeel Rashed, an executive board member of the Islamic Center of Lake Travis, told the Texas Tribune in January.

“Everybody believes we need to be more vigilant. When we start reconstruction we definitely want to plan the security of the place better, have more cameras,” Rashed said.

In Bellevue, Washington, six days before the inauguration, surveillance cameras caught a man walking toward the Islamic Center of Eastside while carrying a backpack and a gallon jug shortly before 2:45 am. Less than a minute later, the mosque was on fire. Investigators at the scene found a melted gallon jug and a gas can. Officers arrested Isaac Wayne Wilson, who remained at the scene, smelled of gasoline, and confessed to setting the blaze, according to police. Authorities said there was no evidence it was a hate crime. A year earlier, Wilson, who has a history of mental illness, had been convicted of misdemeanor assault after an incident at the mosque.

Hours after President Donald Trump signed the controversial executive order banning immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, someone intentionally set fire to the Islamic Center of Victoria in Texas in the middle of the night, according to investigators, who have yet to identify a suspect. The blaze caused more than $500,000 in damage, and completely destroyed the 16-year-old mosque, shaking the Muslim American community in south Texas. The mosque's president, Dr. Shahid Hashmi, told the Texas Tribune his community would forgive whoever set the fire, but added, "there’s no way we can forget. There’s no way our children can forget.”

The fire at the Daarus Salaam Mosque in Thonotosassa, Florida, on Friday was at least the third time in seven months that a mosque in the Tampa area had been set on fire, following incidents at the Islamic Education Center in July and the Masjid Omar mosque in August.

Firefighters responded to the February 24 fire shortly after 2 a.m. — four hours before congregants planned to gather for the early Friday morning prayer session. Within hours, authorities announced that arson had caused the fire, though they did not specify what evidence led them to that conclusion. At a press conference, Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn called the fire “no different than the wave of anti-Semitic attacks on Jewish community centers and synagogue and bomb threats that have been called in all across the country.”

"Whoever did this maybe intended to discourage us not to be part of this community," Mazen Bondogji, a member of the mosque’s board, said at a press conference. "We are part of this community and we will stay."

The number of reported anti-Islam hate crimes had already been on the rise before the presidential campaign picked up steam in 2016. According to a report by the Council on American-Islamic relations, there were 78 instances of mosques being targeted — counting arson, vandalism and other destruction — in 2015. By comparison, 2014 just saw 20 such incidents. A report released last year by Georgetown University’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding found that in 2015, there were eight instances of arson that targeted mosques, or business and homes associated with Muslims.

FBI data shows that the number of reported anti-Muslim hate crimes surged by 67% from 2014 to 2015 (2016 data is not yet available).

But in more recent months, the SPLC reported a rise in reported hate crimes following the election victory of Trump, who campaigned on promises to significantly reduce the number of Muslim immigrants allowed into the country.

"Donald Trump's campaign and victory has emboldened people on the radical right or people who simply hate certain minority groups to act,” Potok said. “They feel that their views have been legitimized by the man who is president of the United States."

Live Updates: Trump To Address The Nation Tonight

BuzzFeed News reporters Alexis Levinson, Tarini Parti, Emma Loop, Lissandra Villa, Ema O’Connor and Paul McLeod will be at the Capitol.

Democrats are using their guest invitations to send Donald Trump a message as he gives his joint address to Congress tonight.

From students affected by the travel ban to undocumented immigrants, the galleries are poised to be filled by people who have felt targeted by the new administration.

"Donald Trump needs to see the diversity, needs to see the policies that directly impact our communities," said Oscar Juarez-Luna, Rep. Jared Polis's guest. Juarez-Luna said he is "undocumented and unafraid."

When asked about potential disruptions during the joint address, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer told reporters Tuesday that members were only urged to be respectful.

An emotional press conference on Tuesday organized by Rhode Island Rep. Jim Langevin featured some of the House Democrats' guests and a message of inclusivity. Langevin said the guests "will serve as a respectful reminder" that diversity is good.

"If you're in Trump's ever expansive definition of what is an enemy, you will be treated like a criminal," said Rep. Judy Chu. Her guest, Sara Yarjani, is a graduate student who was affected by Trump's travel ban. "I want President Trump to see with his own eyes the people he has hurt."

Rep. Chellie Pingree made the point that it would be beneficial for the public as well as Trump to see people attached to public debate.

Other forms of protest include female members of the Democratic caucus wearing white to remind Trump of the suffrage movement.

This approach is a break from previous ways Democrats have protested Trump, like those who skipped his inauguration altogether in January.

WASHINGTON — Asked about the recent wave of anti-Semitic attacks and threats across the nation, President Trump on Tuesday told a group of state attorneys general that "sometimes it's the reverse," Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said of Trump's comments in his and other officials' meeting with the president.

"He just said, 'Sometimes it's the reverse, to make people — or to make others — look bad,' and he used the word 'reverse' I would say two to three times in his comments," Shapiro said. "He did correctly say at the top that it was reprehensible."

Asked for further information about the purpose of the president's comments, Shapiro only said, "I really don't know what he means, or why he said that," adding that Trump said he would be speaking about the issue in his remarks on Tuesday night.

Saying that he hoped to see clarification from the president in those remarks, Shapiro added, "It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me."

White House spokespeople did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, the senate minority leader, said, "That is an absurd and obscene statement."

Confederate Flag Wavers Who Threatened A Child's Birthday Party Get Years In Prison

The Georgia couple convicted of aggravated assault and making terroristic threats when they waved Confederate flags and made racist comments at a child’s birthday party have been sentenced to a combined 19 years in prison.

Jose Torres and Kayla Norton joined 13 other members of a group called Respect the Flag in July 2015 and drove a convoy of pickup trucks into an 8-year-old’s birthday party in Douglasville, Georgia.

Video footage of the incident first captured by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution shows the assailants waving the flags and shouting racist obscenities and threats with their guns out.

At one point in the video, someone can be heard saying, "I’m going to kill y’all niggers."

Torres and Norton were each charged on Feb. 6 with three counts of assault, one count of making terroristic threats and acts, and one count of violating the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism law.

On Monday, Douglas County Superior Court Judge William McClain sentenced 26-year-old Torres to 13 years in prison, and an additional seven to be served on probation.

Norton, 25, was sentenced to six years in prison, with an additional nine years of probation.

The trial included emotional statements made between the defendants and some of the people who had attended the party.

In court, Norton attempted to apologize.

“I accept responsibility for what I’ve done. I know I was in the wrong. But I want you all to know that that is not me,” she said.

Gesturing at Torres, she went on to add, “That is not him. I would never walk up to you and say those words to you, and I’m so sorry that that happened to you. I am so sorry.”

One of the party-goers, Hyesha Bryant, responded to Norton’s statement.

“I never thought this would be something I’d have to endure in 2017,” Bryant began, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. “As adults and parents, we have to instill in our children the values of right and wrong. That moment you had to choose to leave, you stayed. You staying affected my life and it affected my children’s life."

But ultimately, Bryant forgave them.

“I forgive all of you,” she said. “I’m not a mean-spirited person.”

As he handed down his sentence, McClain said that Torres and Norton’s actions were “motivated by racial hatred.”

He also pointed out that in some cases, certain actions combined with the meaning of the Confederate flag cannot be read ambiguously.

“I suppose the Confederate flag can be interpreted different ways in different contexts,” he said, “but if you’re driving around town waving Confederate flags and using the N-word everywhere you go, then there’s only one way to interpret that.”

He added that given “the tension in this country, the absolute last thing we need is people riding around with the Confederate flag threatening people.”

Jon Stewart Rips The Media And Donald Trump's False Statements

Jon Stewart made a surprise visit to see his pal Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show" and slammed the media for obsessing over Donald Trump – especially given the fact that the president repeatedly makes false statements.

Veteran late-night television host Stewart crawled out from under Colbert's desk Monday night to skewer the comments the president has made in his first month of office and to criticize how the media has responded.

The segment began with Colbert addressing Trump's "hostile relationship" with the media, including last week's incident where White House press secretary Sean Spicer banned certain news organizations from attending a news briefing.

"I can't believe the guy has the balls to get away with that," Stewart said as he went on a rant about false statements the president has made in the past month.

"He's lying on purpose you want to know how?," Stewart says. "Because he constantly says the phrase 'believe me.' No one says 'believe me' unless they are lying."

Colbert went on to ask Stewart if banning any members of the press is un-American.

"Hey guys, hey media," Stewart said. "So, I heard Donald broke up with you. Stings a little, doesn't it? You finally thought you'd met your match. A blabbermouth who's as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are. Well now it's over. Well, good riddance, I say. Kick him to the curb."

"It is time for you to get your groove back, media. Because let's face facts, you kind of let yourself go a little bit for these past few years. You put on a few pundits, obsessing 24 hours a day, seven days a week, about this one guy."

He went on to say that the media kept chasing after Trump during the primaries and election by saying he will become more presidential once he takes office.

"Yeah, how'd that work out?" Stewart added. "It didn't. And you know why? Because 70-year-old men don't get less cranky or racist as time goes by. Unless they happen to be visited by three spirits in the night."

"Here’s my point, media," Stewart concluded. "This breakup with Donald Trump has given you, the media, an amazing opportunity for self-reflection and improvement. Instead of worrying about whether Trump is un-American, or if he thinks you're the enemy, or if he's being mean to you, or if he's going to let you go back into the briefings, do something for yourself. Self-improvement! Take up a hobby. I recommend journalism."

Trump Claims Obama Is “Behind” Protests Against Him And White House Leaks

View Video ›

CNN / Fox News

President Donald Trump accused former President Barack Obama of organizing recent protests against him and other Republicans as well as leaking information from the White House to the press.

In an interview set to air Tuesday morning on Fox and Friends, Trump was asked if he believed Obama was organizing recent protests across the country, including a series raucous GOP town halls.

"I think he is behind it," Trump replied. "I also think it's politics."

Trump said he believed Obama's "people" are behind "some of the leaks, which are really very serious, because they're very bad in terms of national security."

Read the full transcript from the interview here:

Fox & Friends: Can we talk about president Obama? You said you personally get along with him. You guys were going at each other for three, four, eight year. It turns out a lot of his people are organizing, do you think he is behind it?

Trump: No, I think he is behind it. I also think it's politics. That's the way it is.

Fox & Friends: Bush wasn't going after Clinton, Clinton wasn't going after bush.

Trump: Well, you never know exactly what's happening behind the scenes. You're possibly right but you never know. But I think President Obama's behind it, because his people are certainly behind it. And some of the leaks possibly come from that group. You know, some of the leaks, which are really very serious leaks, because they're very bad in terms of national security, but I also understand that's politics. And in terms of him being behind things, that's politics, and it will probably continue.

911 Audio Reveals Kansas Bar Shooter Believed He Killed Two Iranians

Mugshot of Kansas bar shooting suspect Adam Purinton

Handout / Reuters

After Adam Purinton allegedly shot three people inside a Kansas bar last week, killing one, the 51-year-old reportedly fled the scene and drove about 80 miles to an Applebee’s restaurant in Clinton, Missouri.

The restaurant proved to be an effective hideout for at least a short time until Purinton confided in a female bartender that he was on the run from the cops. After Purinton confessed, the bartender called 911, telling the dispatcher that Purinton believed he had “killed two Iranian people” in the attack.

“I need to report something,” the bartender told the 911 dispatcher, according to audio acquired by FOX4 KC.

“I'm a bartender at Applebee's and I had this guy come into the bar and he told me that he had done something really bad and he was on the run from the police, and he asked if he could stay with me and my husband and he wouldn't tell me what he did,” the 911 caller continued.

“I kept asking him. He said he would tell me if I agreed to let him stay with me. I finally got him to tell me and he said that he shot and killed two Iranian people in Olathe and I looked it up on the news and there was a shooting three hours ago.”

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, killed in the attack

gofundme.com

Earlier that night, at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas, Purinton allegedly shot two 32-year-old Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani. He reportedly told the two men, who he thought were Middle Eastern, “get out of my country” before he opened fire. Madasani survived but Kuchibhotla later died at the hospital.

A third victim, 24-year-old Ian Grillot, rushed Purinton after he thought the gunman had emptied his magazine. Purinton fired a round at Grillot hitting him in the hand. He then left the scene.

The Applebees’ bartender told the 911 dispatcher that Purinton made her promise she wouldn’t call the police. She warned the dispatcher that “there are people in the building and I'm afraid he's going to freak out if he sees the cops come to the building. And I don't know what to do.”

Purinton was taken into custody without incident at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, police said. He is charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The FBI is currently investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime.

A Native Photographer Reflects On The End Of The Standing Rock Camp

Josue Rivas / Honor the Earth

The Army Corps of Engineers last week closed the Oceti Sakowin camp that had been protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline since August 2016. Mexica tribe photographer Josué Rivas, who is currently working with Honor the Earth, has been living in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, since last summer. BuzzFeed News spoke to him about what he witnessed during the camp's closure on Feb. 23.

How long have you been at Standing Rock?

Since August. I'm from Los Angeles originally. My uncle is from Standing Rock — my spiritual uncle. He made a call for me to come out and document what was going on in his territory.

What happened today [Feb. 23] at Standing Rock?

What happened is that the people who remained in camp through the winter were given an eviction notice to remove themselves. Through my photos, I was able to document the forced removal of the Oceti Sakowin Camp, which I believe was the end of a chapter.

Where are you going now?

I will continue on here for another week and then go back to my family and rest and get ready for whatever is next. I know the opposition to DAPL is not over and people won't stop until the project is dead.

Josue Rivas / Honor the Earth

How has it been emotionally, watching everything come down?

It might sound weird, but there is a little bit of victory in the sense that, for what I witnessed, including yesterday [Feb. 22], people never backed down. They held their ground in a peaceful way, rooted in prayer. Even though the people were forcefully removed from unceded treaty land and they are out of the camp, it's like a turn of a page. From what I witnessed in the last six months, people getting maced, shot at with rubber bullets, being out in the river in the cold — remembering those things and then going to yesterday when people walked out of the camp in prayer, that was powerful.

It doesn’t mean that the pipeline won’t be stopped — there’s still work to do — but it feels good that the people remained strong until the last minute and kept their honor.

Josue Rivas / Honor the Earth

Can you speak about the fires happening at the camp?

A Dine (Navajo) water protector asked his elders back home what they should do about the traditional structures that they built in camp. The elder said that because of the previous behavior by law enforcement disposing of tips and ceremonial items in a disrespectful way in October, the structures should be burned in a ceremony to protect them from disrespect.

I’ve witnessed and been a part of many ceremonies at the camp. In order to document them, I first had to have a clear intention on why I wanted to be part of them. A lot of the ceremonies and traditions were illegal until 1978, and because of the the American Indian Freedom of Religion Act, we are able to practice them today. For people at the camp, these ceremonies and songs were the last things they had, so I honored that and made sure my approach was gentle and respectful.

These camps were a ceremony of its own — it wasn’t just about a pipeline, it was a movement about identity, about solidarity and sovereignty. For myself, as an indigenous man, I often felt isolated in mainstream "American" society. At Standing Rock, I became a majority, and that is something I never experienced before. As a journalist, I was able to educate other journalists about the power in these prayer camps. It’s very empowering. It makes you feel more confident in your right to be indigenous and in your ability to be a journalist.

There's been a lot of discussion over who should tell the story of Standing Rock and how it's been portrayed in the media. Can you talk about that a bit?

I think what happened with the media at Standing Rock — at first it was a blackout, there was a lack of coverage, there was no investment from major media outlets, and once conflict starting happening, people invested themselves in the story. We saw a lot of inconsistency from the media in reporting, with large outlets coming in trying to tell the story of a people that they didn’t fully understand.

There was a core group of us as indigenous filmmakers and journalists that were here throughout. A lot of times when you go to indigenous communities there are a lot of non-native reporters trying to tell the story of those people.

In this movement, you saw native people doing simple things, such as grabbing their phones and starting a livestream; you saw native people taking charge of their narrative; and from that, larger media outlets would contact us for our footage because they never sent their correspondents in the first place.

We need more indigenous journalists to document their communities so that we get culturally accurate portrayals of who we really are and not what people think we should be.

What I saw at Standing Rock, non-native journalists and filmmakers were really intrigued by the culture, they saw the Native Americans, the tipis, the feathers, the horses, but they were lacking the understanding of who Native Americans are in modern history. They were anthropologists in a way, and it's not fully their fault, it's just the lack of education in the history of our communities. They weren’t genuinely invested in the people — they were mostly attracted to the romanticized idea of who we are.

I would encourage people to document their own communities; it makes you more connected to the story. It's a little more accurate and more honorable.

What are two things you would want to state explicitly about Standing Rock?

I would tell the world that what happened at Standing Rock really is the epicenter of the modern civil rights movement. Before there were protests against Donald Trump, there were prayers here. People got inspired by Standing Rock to eventually continue to stand up to other issues, as all these issues are connected.

And it came from a prayer.

The second thing is the importance of having proper, consistent coverage from indigenous people on the ground. There were drone operators, photographers, filmmakers who weren’t being recognized as they should have been. Before we are journalists, we are human beings. And I think that indigenous journalists understand the importance of approaching the story with intimacy and not just getting the story that is in the surface. We understand how to report from an ethical place, not an extractive place.

One way to counteract those ways of reporting, one very useful way of doing that is creating a body of work, something that you invest yourself in. The more time I spend here on the ground, the more I understand how my work will preserve the story of Standing Rock for future generations. I’m building a project with layers so that I can tell a full story instead of just a few good photos.

We as journalists need to invest ourselves in the stories and be consistent, not just take some photos over the weekend and feel like that’s all you need to do.

Bomb Threats Were Directed At Jewish Centers In 11 States In Just One Day

Bomb threats were called into Jewish community centers and schools in at least 11 states on Monday, adding to a growing list of anti-Semitic incidents across the US this year.

Local media and police confirmed reports of threats on Monday in North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Michigan, Alabama, Maryland, Indiana, and Virginia. No injuries were reported.

The latest rash of threats against Jewish centers is the fifth since the beginning of 2017, bringing the number of threats in the US and Canada to at least 80 reported before the end of February.

The threats on Monday come one day after a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia was desecrated. On Sunday, around 100 headstones were knocked over at the Mount Carmel Cemetery in northeast Philadelphia, police said.

While anti-semitic rhetoric rises around the country, the Trump administration has been slow to attempt to quell the vitriol.

The White House took considerable flack in the first days after President Trump took office when it failed to mentioned Jews in a statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Then at a marathon press conference, Trump told a Jewish reporter to “sit down” after he asked if his administration felt any responsibility for the apparent increase in overt anti-semitic acts since the 2016 election. Trump added in his response that he is “the least anti-Semitic person.”

Last week, Trump denounced anti-Semitism after 11 Jewish community centers across the country received bomb threats, and vandals defaced more than 100 headstones at a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis.

“I will tell you that anti-Semitism is horrible and it’s going to stop. It has to stop,” Trump told MSNBC’s Craig Melvin.

That same day, Trump continued addressing the issue after taking a tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.

“The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are horrible and are painful and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil,” he told reporters.

Steven Goldstein, executive director of the Anne Frank Center, responded with a statement, calling Trump’s “sudden acknowledgment is a Band-Aid on the cancer of anti-Semitism that has infected his own administration.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request to comment on Monday's bomb threats.

The FBI and Department of Justice, meanwhile, have launched investigations into the rash of bomb threats.

Trump's Nominee For Navy Secretary Has Withdrawn From Consideration

Alex Brandon / AP

Philip Bilden, the businessman nominated by President Trump to be Secretary of the Navy, withdrew himself from consideration on Sunday.

"After an extensive review process, I have determined that I will not be able to satisfy the Office of Government Ethics requirements without undue disruption and materially adverse divestment of my family's private financial interests," Bilden said in a statement.

Bilden would have required Senate confirmation to assume the role.

Vehicle Plows Into Crowd At Mardi Gras Parade, Seriously Injuring About A Dozen People

Via Facebook: RobKriegerFOX8

More than a dozen people on the streets of New Orleans for a Mardi Gras parade Saturday night were injured when a vehicle plowed into a crowd, police said.

About a dozen of them were in critical condition, police said.

The crash was reported at about 6:45 p.m. local time at the intersection of Orleans and Carrollton avenues, police said. The number of people injured in the crash may increase, officials added.

One person was seen being detained by New Orleans Police.

The crowd was gathered for the Krewe of Endymion parade when a truck reportedly sped through an intersection and into the crowd.

One witness told The Times-Picayune he heard four loud crashes before he saw a pickup truck come to rest against a garbage bin.

Several people, including a police officer, were pinned between the truck and the bin.

"He took out rows of people," Greg McNeely told The Times-Picayune.

Video recorded by a reporter for local Fox station WVUE showed police detaining a young man in shorts and a T-shirt, who was identified by one officer as the driver.

The parade, meanwhile, continued on its route as crews worked to clear the scene.

This Mom Wrote Ivanka Trump A Letter Asking Her To Protect Her Transgender Daughter

“By four, Samuel broke out in hives when we tried to cut his hair, and at five he told us, through tears, that he wanted to burn his face off because it wasn’t a girl face.”

The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it would rescind federal protections for transgender students, a move that deeply distressed Isabel Rose, whose 8-year-old daughter, Sadie, is transgender.

The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it would rescind federal protections for transgender students, a move that deeply distressed Isabel Rose, whose 8-year-old daughter, Sadie, is transgender.

That night, Rose realized just how much the announcement had frightened Sadie, she told BuzzFeed News.

"As I was tucking her into bed, she said to me with completely sincere worry, ‘Mommy, what if Trump comes to my school and makes me use the boy’s room? Do I get the principal?'"

Rose quickly comforted her daughter and said she should keep using the girl's room. But it was a tough conversation, she said.

Isabel Rose

It's been widely shared online since it was published Friday.

Rose shares a surprising number of similarities to Trump, she points out in the letter. Both come from notable New York real estate families, attended prestigious schools, married Jewish men, and now have young children.

Samuel liked to play dress up from a very young age. When he was two, his camp counselor sent us photos of him dressed up in princess costumes and a pink bonnet.

At three, Samuel’s preschool teacher informed us that he chose a tutu from the dress up bin instead of the doctor’s lab coat or fireman jacket that the other boys favored.

By four, Samuel broke out in hives when we tried to cut his hair, and at five he told us, through tears, that he wanted to burn his face off because it wasn’t a girl face.

He also tore at his genitalia with such hatred, I had to pin his arms down at his sides. “I’m not supposed to have a penis!” he sobbed night after night. “I’m supposed to have what you have, mommy.”

Rose appealed to Trump as a mother, asking how she would respond if she had a transgender child:

President Trump Is Skipping The White House Correspondents Association Dinner

Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that he is skipping the White House Correspondents Association dinner amid the most tense relationship between a sitting president and the press corps since the Nixon era.

Trump, who in the past few weeks has taken to calling media outlets who write pieces critical of his administration the "enemy of the American people" added, "please wish everyone well and have a great evening!"

The annual, celebrity-studded WHCA dinner has long been criticized as a display of too-cozy relations between the media and people they are supposed to cover fairly and critically. It usually involves a comedian or master of ceremonies roasting the president, and then president responding in kind. The proceeds go to scholarships. (Some outlets, choose not to attend the event. For example, the New York Times stopped going in 2007 and BuzzFeed News does not go.)

This year's dinner posed a particularly sticky situation for both the White House and the media. Trump, while on the campaign trail, would condone chants of "CNN sucks!" at his rallies and sometimes called out specific reporters. That later developed into Trump adopting and using the term "fake news" for any article — generally published in the mainstream media — he didn't like.

That only intensified when he entered office. He began calling some outlets — namely, The New York Times, NBC News, ABC News, CBS News and CNN — "the enemy of the American people," which is unprecedented vitriol.

Earlier this month, the New Yorker, canceled its kickoff party and Vanity Fair said it was dropping out of sponsoring its exclusive after-party. This week, Bloomberg, Vanity Fair's co-host, also dropped out. And on Friday BuzzFeed News reported that CNN was considering skipping the dinner all together.

Barbara Pierce Bush Will Headline A Planned Parenthood Fundraiser

Gary Gershoff / Getty Images

Barbara Pierce Bush, the co-founder of a health equity non-profit and the daughter of former President George W. Bush, will be the headline speaker at a Planned Parenthood fundraiser in Texas on Wednesday.

The event — the 2017 Fort Worth Annual Luncheon — supports the organization that provides healthcare services for women, including abortions. Tickets begin at $150 and go as high at $20,000 for a table.

Her speech — first reported by the Texas Tribune comes several days after it was revealed that a draft Obamacare repeal plan, created by House Republicans, would defund Planned Parenthood. If the measure were introduced and passed in that chamber it would set up a major battle in the Senate.

Denying Planned Parenthood of its federal funds — a priority for many Republicans — would devastate the organization, and supports said it could leave thousands of women without ready access to reproductive health care.

Bush has expressed support for Planned Parenthood in the past — and her mother, former first lady Laura Bush, said in 2010 she supports abortion. Their views run counter to their father and husband, the former president, who was a staunch opponent of abortion.

Bush's non-profit, Global Health Corps, said on its website that it partners with several Planned Parenthood affiliates.

Churches Are Readying Homes And Underground Railroads To Hide Immigrants From Deportation Under Trump

Churches across the US are fighting back against the Trump administration’s mandate to ramp up deportations with new sanctuary practices of their own, using private homes in their congregations as shelter and potentially creating a modern-day underground railroad to ferry undocumented immigrants from house-to-house or into Canada.

Church leaders from California to Illinois and New York, told BuzzFeed News they’re willing to take their sanctuary operations for undocumented immigrants underground should federal immigration authorities, emboldened by Trump’s recent directives to take a harder line on deportations, ignore precedent and raid their campuses.

“We’re willing to take that risk because it is our call to justice, and this is how we live our faith,” Rev. Justo Gonzalez, II, pastor of Pilgrim St. Luke’s in Buffalo, told BuzzFeed News, who leads one of the churches that has reached out to an organization in Canada to possibly take in undocumented families.

“I really feel like what we’re doing is what God would want us to do."

Gonzalez knows they are stepping into legally murky territory, especially when it comes to possibly smuggling immigrants into Canada, but he said attorneys in his congregation have agreed to help them pro bono if they find themselves in hot water.

“I’m thrilled that we’re establishing a cross-border (link) into another country, so we could support people finding places they are welcome in because, frankly, this administration is not the place,” Gonzalez said.

LA Voice in Los Angeles, an interfaith organization that is also working on a network of churches to provide sanctuary to undocumented immigrants, has also made contact with Canadian groups if the need arises, officials said. The group is also working with about 200 places of worship to provide sanctuary in the region.

Given the choice to risk deportation or stay together, some families may opt to head to Canada to stay together, LA Voice officials told BuzzFeed News.

“I really feel like what we’re doing is what God would want us to do,” Zach Hoover, executive director for LA Voice, said.

The group is willing to not only to take undocumented immigrants, but to hide them in housing provided by their network of churches, mosques, and synagogues across Southern California. Hoover admits it’s a legal gray area and doesn’t discount the possibility of the federal government targeting groups like his in the future.

Still, he says his faith and that of other religious leaders makes it an easier decision to make.

“When you die, the question is not, ‘Did you follow the government?’ and then you’re allowed into heaven,” he said. “It’s, ‘Did you care for your neighbor?’”

Despite repeated assurances by senior Trump administration officials that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will continue to focus on those living illegally in the country with criminal records or who pose a threat to public safety, many congregations are skeptical. President Trump’s recent executive orders on immigration and two Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memos abandon Obama-era mandates to only focus on criminals for deportation, and instead, put nearly every undocumented immigrant at risk of deportation for something as minor as a traffic ticket.

Recent ICE raids in cities across the nation that rounded up hundreds of undocumented immigrants also raised ire, even though officials insisted they were routine and planned before Trump took office.

Trump has also taken a combative stance with local jurisdictions that have enacted sanctuary-type policies limiting cooperation with immigration authorities, threatening to yank federal funds in response.

Rev. Beth Brown of Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois, said she hopes the potential public fallout from ICE agents raiding churches will keep them from doing so, her church may also decide to shift into a less-public underground network that could move undocumented immigrants from church-to-church or into homes to keep them out of reach of federal officials.

ICE lists churches as “sensitive locations” that should be avoided unless circumstances require immediate action, or if there is prior approval from a site supervisor. And in a statement to BuzzFeed News, ICE spokeswoman Sarah Rodriguez said the agency’s sensitive locations policy remains in effect.

But clergy leaders BuzzFeed News spoke to weren’t counting on it.

“There is some question about whether this sanctuary movement is going to continue being that public, or if the sanctuary movement is going to go more underground,” Brown said. “That stems from concern that under this administration, the same expectations that ICE would not go into sensitive locations may or may not be the same under this administration.”

The idea behind expanding sanctuaries beyond churches and into private homes is that they are constitutionally protected under the Fourth Amendment against unlawful search and seizure, meaning law enforcement would need to get a warrant, said Rev. Francisco Garcia of Holy Faith Episcopal Church in Inglewood, California. Officials typically wouldn’t need a warrant to enter a church since it’s considered a more public space.

The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, of which his church is a member, passed a resolution in December for all its 150 churches in Southern California to commit to being sanctuaries. So far, at least 50 are willing to house immigrants and about a dozen parishioners have offered up guest rooms that are “basically ready when we need them,” Garcia said.

The recent arrest by ICE officials of at least two men who crossed the street after leaving a church hypothermia shelter in Virginia sent wave of concern among immigrant advocates that the policy of leaving churches alone was being abandoned. If so, Garcia said, his church is ready.

“We’re preparing for that,” he said. “Now there’s a different element of uncertainty and risk that the church and other communities of faith have to be willing to take.”

Joanne, who declined to give her last name in order to protect the location of her Los Angeles area home, has offered up a guest room that’s “ready to go” to an undocumented immigrant or family seeking refuge.

“It just seems like the right thing to do if people are feeling unsafe where they lived and needed to live in a different part of town,” she said. “If you have the privilege of not being vulnerable to deportation you need to use that privilege to protect the vulnerable.”

In many cases, she said, these are folks who used a fake Social Security number to work or returned after being deported.

“When people hear that language they imagine that we’re talking about people convicted of murder or rape when in reality the vast majority of people were trying to earn a living,” Joanne said.

In addition to the new hide-and-seek measures being considered, many more churches across the US are bulking up on the inside to accommodate immigrants on campus, building new facilities to deal with an influx of people seeking refuge.

More than 800 congregations nationwide have promised to support the movement, the National Sanctuary Movement reported this week.

Guillermo Torres, faith leader organizer and coordinator of the immigrant campaign for the LA-based Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, has led training for 135 interfaith leaders in the area on how to help or become sanctuaries.

“There’s a big surge in clergy or leaders who are not even a part of our agency who are now being compelled to offer sanctuary,” Torres said. “The reality of hosting a family or individual that needs sanctuary is becoming more real day-by-day.”

“Is this a president who will do what he actually said he was going to do? In which case, it’s pretty scary.”

Rev. Grant Stevensen, clergy organizer for ISAIAH, a faith-based coalition of about 100 congregations in Minnesota, said his group had built a network of 25 churches willing to take in and house undocumented immigrants.

“People didn’t expect this to go as far as it did,” Stevensen said. “Is this a president who will do what he actually said he was going to do? In which case, it’s pretty scary.”

The network, Stevensen said, is composed of Presbyterian, Lutheran, Church of Christ, Catholic, and Quaker parishes. Synagogues in the state have also stepped in to help.

“When you walk into a church, you’re walking out of the United States and you’re walking into the kingdom of God,” Stevensen said. “These are places where you don’t have to be in the regular political context of this country.”

Families that commit to sanctuaries are basically keeping themselves on house arrest and reliant on the host church, he added.

“We want to have these spaces for people, but we’ll be aware people don’t want to do this,” Stevensen said

Some churches have apartments, others are reconfiguring choir rooms and halls to be able to house people.

“There are a couple of churches that I know who are remodeling, adding showers,” Stevensen said. “We have congregations that are finding serious space in their budgets to do physical work in their church.”

Brown’s church in Chicago, for example, decided to convert part of a top floor previously used for storage into a living space, and showers are being added.

Despite the possible legal ramifications, Rev. Jane Eller-Isaacs, co-minister of Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul, Minnesota, her congregation is converting a classroom space into living quarters for a family. And a duplex currently being used by a student minister, she said, could become a space for about 10 young DREAMers — students granted protections from deportation under an Obama-era program — should they too be targeted.

“We don’t see ourselves as saviors, we see ourselves as responders and protectors,” she said. “Making that decision seems to have brought out the best of who we are.”

Several parishioners have also volunteered to offer their homes for use should it come to that, she said.

Eller-Isaacs knows she’s stepping on murky legal ground, but remains undeterred.

“I’m willing to get arrested,” she said. “This is no question for me.”
