Minnesota Man Decapitated His Girlfriend's Alleged Rapist, Police Say

Joseph Christen Thoresen

A 35-year-old Minnesota man is accused of brutally beating and decapitating his girlfriend's alleged rapist, authorities said.

Joseph Thoresen of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, is being held on second-degree murder charges in the June 21 death of David Haiman, the Associated Press reported. According to the police report, Thoresen is accused of beating his acquaintance Haiman with a baseball bat and beheading him with a large knife.

The complaint says the unidentified woman told Thoresen that Haiman had raped her in the couple's bedroom. When Haiman arrived at their Grand Rapids apartment, she punched him. She said he then agreed to be tied up and beaten.

The woman tied Haiman up with a rope in the bedroom and punched him in the face, breaking his nose. Haiman was then untied and Thoresen repeatedly punched him while yelling he shouldn't have raped "my girl," according to the police report.

The couple then got in Haiman's car, with him in the back seat. Thoresen drove them around while they smoked marijuana and meth, the woman said in the police report.

The three were driving in the woods when the woman said Haiman started calling them "pieces of shit" and her "a slut," the police report said.

Thoresen said they began to experience car troubles, so he got out of the vehicle and opened the hood. The woman said Haiman also exited the car and she heard a loud thud, according to the complaint.

Thoresen stabbed Haiman multiple times while he was on the ground groaning and asking for her, she said. Thoresen then took a large knife from Haiman's belt loop and cut his head off. The girlfriend said that she tried to make Thoresen stop and said that this was “not my Joe,” the complaint said.

Thoresen made his initial appearance Wednesday on a murder charge in Itasca County District Court, the AP reported. His bail was set at $1 million with conditions.

The woman was being held Wednesday in the Itasca County Jail on a preliminary fifth-degree assault charge. She had not yet been formally charged.

Movie Theater Chain Seeks $700,000 From Victims Of Aurora Shooting

Brennan Linsley / AP

The owner of the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater where 12 people were shot dead in 2012 is now seeking nearly $700,000 from victims who filed an unsuccessful lawsuit claiming it could have prevented the massacre.

Several family members of the slain, as well as people who were injured in the shooting, filed the civil suit against Cinemark, arguing the theater should have provided more security for the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. As the movie played to a packed house, 24-year-old James Holmes entered through an exit door he had propped open, threw a smoke canister, and sprayed the theater with bullets. In addition to the 12 killed, 70 others were injured.

In May, a jury ruled that the theater was not liable for the shooting. Lawyers for Cinemark argued that Holmes, now serving life in prison, was the only person responsible and that the theater could not have foreseen the massacre or prevented his actions.

“The community has spoken,” Cinemark attorney Kevin Taylor told the Denver Post after the verdict was announced. “Its conscience has been heard.”

Cinemark's victory in court saved the theater chain from bearing any financial responsibility for the injuries or deaths at the Century 16 in Aurora. As the winning party in the suit, the theater may now seek to recover some of the costs of going to trial.

On June 13, lawyers for Cinemark said they are seeking $699,187.13 for preservation of evidence, records retrieval and copy costs, courier services, court reporter fees, travel expenses, and trial exhibits. A judge will now determine what costs, if any, the victims should pay.

Ken Citron, an attorney for the victims, told BuzzFeed News in a statement that it is typical for the winner of a civil suit to seek reimbursement.

"However, considering the disparity between the plaintiffs’ financial circumstances and Cinemark’s (as one of the largest movie theater companies in the world) and the extreme mental and physical trauma the plaintiffs have endured for naught, defendants’ application for costs appears unseemly and insensitive even if legally provided for," he said.

Cinemark owns more than 500 theaters across the U.S. and Latin America.

Sandy Phillips, the mother of one of the victims, said Cinemark has never offered to help those affected by the shooting. Phillips' 24-year-old daughter, Jessica Ghawi, was killed in the attack. Others who survived have lifelong injuries, including paralysis and brain damage.

YouTube Stars And Fans Grapple With A New Reality After Christina Grimmie Shooting

BuzzFeed News

ANAHEIM, California — The massive VidCon convention that takes place in the shadow of Disneyland has for years offered what is for many diehard fans the chance of a lifetime to meet and interact with their favorite YouTube stars. But that’s changing in the wake of the fatal shooting of Christina Grimmie, a YouTuber whose star was rising after competing on The Voice.

In response to the shooting, VidCon doubled the number of security officers to 450 this past weekend and instituted safety measures that will likely become the new normal for how social media stars interact with fans in person.

The 7th Annual VidCon at Anaheim Convention Center on June 24, 2016, in Anaheim, California.

Tara Ziemba / WireImage

Opportunities for fan engagement were slashed — bags were checked prior to meet-and-greets, fans weren’t allowed to approach and ask questions of their favorite celebrities in person, and organizers declared that gift-giving would “no longer be a thing.”

“This is probably how it should have been for a while, but I think we wanted to trick ourselves into thinking we were really safe in this environment,” said Arden Rose, a 21-year-old who has been posting her life on YouTube and other platforms since she was 14. “Something could have happened a while ago, it just would have been a different scenario on a different level.”

VidCon — where fans typically shell out $100 to $150 to attend panels and meet social media stars — has grown into a massive event that brings the scattered corners of internet fandom to one venue. When it started in 2010, just 1,400 fans and panelists turned out. This year, the convention sold out at a capacity of 25,000, and organizers plan to expand overseas to meet demand from fans who can’t get enough.

The explosive growth of the online celeb industry, combined with the shock of Grimmie’s death at the hands of what police described as a deranged fan, is forcing a reconsideration of what top YouTubers described as a freewheeling, if not naive, culture.

Celebrities at VidCon over this past weekend also weren’t allowed to linger after panels or approach audience members, a major departure from years past.

“This sucks,” VidCon organizers said when announcing the changes. “Obviously, we don’t want to build a wall between creators and their communities, but it is unfortunately necessary.”

But at the event, fans and YouTubers alike seemed resigned to the idea that Grimmie’s death was innocence lost.

“It’s smart, but it sucks that we can’t meet them,” said Daisy Cafes, a 13-year-old who was in the standing-room-only section for Tyler Oakley. “It’s kind of not fair for the fans.”

Anthony Padilla, a member of the YouTube comedy duo Smosh, told BuzzFeed News he has watched VidCon go from everyone hanging in the lobby to the managed frenzy it is today. The trick for online celebrities now will be balancing new security concerns and interacting with fans to build their brand.

“A lot of YouTubers have some really excited fans, and some of those fans are really overzealous, and it is the nature of a YouTuber to be very personal,” he said. “It’s hard because you want to be really close to your audience, and you want to share your entire life with your audience, but you kind of have to know the limit.”

Many celebrities at the four-day convention told BuzzFeed News the stricter security measures were welcome, if not long overdue.

GloZell, a comedian and YouTube star with more than 8 million social media followers, even described Grimmie as a hero for opening the industry’s eyes to the dangers inherent in such close fan interaction.

“What a sacrifice she has made that people are going to amp up security,” GloZell said. “I was really contemplating not going.”

So were YouTube twin stars Gabi and Niki Demartino, according to their manager, Steven Grossman. Ultimately, he decided to hire private security "to make them feel as safe and comfortable as possible."

Strange run-ins with fans, in fact, have become such an issue that their parents built a security barrier around their house to keep fans from approaching and loitering, Grossman added.

Outside the confines of coordinated security at major conventions, YouTubers now have a lot more to consider when attending fan meet-and-greets, which one longtime publicist said can often turn into “a celebrity petting zoo.”

“I am about to go on tour right now and I am nervous because how do you go on stage and confidently perform every single night and do meet-and-greets — I want to meet all the kids, but feel safe,” said Todrick Hall, a 31-year-old who just released his debut album, Straight Outta Oz. “So I am just going to pray, and do the best that I can do, and meet everyone that I can, and have security there, and hopefully I will come out on the other side.”

Adnan Syed Of "Serial" Podcast Is Granted A New Murder Trial

Syed’s conviction in the death of Hae Min Lee has been vacated and he will be re-tried in the case.

Welch said he agreed with Syed's attorney, C. Justin Brown, that the original defense attorney, Cristina Gutierrez, had fallen "below the standard of reasonable judgment" during the first trial.

He cited the fact that Gutierrez failed to cross-examine a witness who testified about the reliability of cell phone data in determining a person's location, even though she had been informed the data might not be accurate.

Welch also noted that Gutierrez did not call a potential alibi witness to testify.

That witness, Asia McClain, claims she saw Syed in the library during the time prosecutors say Lee was killed in 1999. She also reaffirmed her statements in a February court appearance.

Lee, a Baltimore high school student, vanished in January 1999 and was found dead the following month. Police soon arrested Syed, now 35, and he was convicted of murder in 2000.

Paul Ryan Says The House Will Have A Vote On Guns

U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI)

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan told fellow Republicans on a conference call Thursday that the House will vote next week on a bill that would prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns, a source on the call told BuzzFeed News.

The gun measure will be part of a terrorism package aimed at disrupting radicalization and recruitment, the source said.

Ryan told the members on the call that it’s “just common sense” to make sure that suspected terrorists can’t buy guns.

Ryan’s decision to hold the vote comes one week after the House Democrats staged a 26-hour sit-in demanding a vote on new gun legislation following the Orlando nightclub massacre, where 49 people were killed.

At multiple points during the sit-in, Ryan attempted to bring the House to order. Democrats on the floor chanted, “No bill! No break!”

Democrats vowed to continue the protest when the House returned after the Fourth of July recess.

Ryan initially dismissed the action by the Democrats, calling the sit-in a “publicity stunt.”

He said on the call today that leadership is thoroughly reviewing what happened on the House floor and will “take any action we deem necessary.”

It is unclear exactly what the gun bill that Ryan intends to take up will look like. Some Democrats are speculating that it will be similar to the bill authored by Republican Senator John Cornyn, which was one of four gun bills voted down by the Senate last week.

Cornyn’s bill called for law enforcement to receive notification when someone on a terror watchlist attempts to purchase a gun and gives officials a 72-hour window to determine probable cause to deny the purchase. It received backing by the National Rifle Association.

“House Democrats will keep up our efforts to push for the Majority to allow a vote on gun violence legislation, but bringing up a bill authored by the NRA just isn’t going to cut it,” said a spokesperson for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Aides for House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said that they look forward to seeing what Ryan proposes.

“It remains to be seen whether the legislation is a bipartisan proposal that will address gun violence by keeping guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists, or if this is a partisan package that includes poison pill provisions – such as the Cornyn or Johnson proposals,” said Mariel Saez, national spokesperson for Hoyer.

U.S. Opens Investigation After Tesla Driver Killed While Using Autopilot

Jim Dyson / Getty Images

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Tesla's Model S vehicle and its "Autopilot" system after a driver using the feature was killed in a crash.

The crash, involving a 2015 Model S vehicle, marked the first known fatality from a vehicle using self-driving technology in the U.S.

In a lengthy statement, Tesla called the NHTSA investigation a "preliminary evaluation to determine whether the system worked according to expectations."

The deadly crash occurred on May 7 in Williston, Florida, when the driver of a tractor-trailer made a left turn in front of the Tesla, according to a statement from the NHTSA obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The investigation will be handled by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, but officials noted that the probe did not mean a defect was suspected in the car's driverless technology.

Mark Schiefelbein / AP

"NHTSA will gather additional data regarding this incident and other information regarding the automated driving systems," NHTSA Communications Director Bryan Thomas said in a statement.

The inquiry will focus on the "design and performance of any automated driving systems in use at the time of the crash," according records on the investigation.

There are about 25,000 similar models currently in circulation, according to NHTSA.

"This is the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated," Tesla said in statement, calling the fatal crash a "tragic loss."

Tesla attributed the "extremely rare circumstances" of the crash as to why the system's brakes did not engage.

"Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied," the Tesla statement read. "The high ride height of the trailer combined with the its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer."

The Tesla crashed into the side of the truck's trailer, with its windshield hitting the bottom of the trailer, according to the company

"Had the Model S impacted the front or rear of the trailer, even at high speed, its advanced crash system would likely have prevented serious injury as it has in numerous other similar incidents," Tesla said.

The deadly crash comes at a time when automakers are beginning to introduce the new self-driving technology to the market.

Tesla noted that its "Autopilot" feature is automatically disabled in its Model S vehicles, and warns drivers before enabling it that "the system is a new technology and still in a public beta phase before it can be enabled."

Tesla said that while "it is not perfect," the technology is "getting better all the time."

"When used in conjunction with driver oversight, the data is unequivocal that Autopilot reduced driver workload and results in statistically significant improvement in safety."

The company did not identify the driver in the May 7 crash, but called him "a friend to Tesla and the broader EV community."

A Federal Judge Blocked A Law Banning Some Abortions In Indiana

Abortion rights advocates outside Indiana Gov. Mike Pence̢۪s office in March protest against a law that would ban abortions sought because of fetal genetic abnormality.

Aric Chokey / AP

A federal judge on Thursday blocked an Indiana law that bans abortions sought because of a fetal genetic abnormality.

The law, which would have become effective Friday, bans abortions "sought solely because the fetus has been diagnosed with, or has a potential diagnosis of, Down syndrome or any other disability."

U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt granted a preliminary injunction sought by Planned Parenthood in Indiana and Kentucky, which in an April lawsuit filed with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), argued that several provisions of the law were unconstitutional.

Planned Parenthood contended that the law's provisions, "clearly violate well-established Supreme Court precedent in that they prohibit women from obtaining an abortion prior to fetal viability" thereby violating a woman's privacy rights.

North Dakota is the only other state with a law that bans abortions sought because of fetal genetic abnormalities or because of the race, color, national origin, or ancestry of the fetus.

Gov. Mike Pence signed the HEA 1337 bill into law in March, prompting strong opposition and protests from pro-choice advocates. "I respect the feelings of every Hoosier on this issue but I’m pro life and I stand by my decision to sign this legislation,” Pence said in response to protests at the time.

The state argued that there was an increase in the number of abortions due to technological advances leading to earlier and more accurate information on whether a fetus was potentially diagnosed with Down Syndrome or other disabilities and that the law's provisions would go further in "protecting potential life from discrimination."

Pratt said that the law's provisions went against the Supreme Court's rulings, which declared that states cannot prohibit women from choosing to have an abortion before fetus viability. She also wrote that Indiana had failed to cite a single case where a court recognized an exception to the Supreme Court's "categorical rule."

"This is unsurprising given that it is a woman’s right to choose an abortion that is protected, which, of course, leaves no room for the State to examine the basis or bases upon which a woman makes her choice," Pratt wrote in her ruling.

Planned Parenthood had also challenged the law's provision that an aborted or miscarried fetus must be buried or cremated. Pratt's ruling also blocked this provision saying, "the State’s asserted interest in treating fetal remains with the dignity of human remains is not legitimate given that the law does not recognize a fetus as a person."

These Muslims Are Praying In A Basement While Fighting To Get Their Mosque Built

A home in Bayonne, New Jersey with signs against the proposed Muslim community center.

Talal Ansari

Muslims in Bayonne, New Jersey have wanted an Islamic center and prayer hall for nearly two decades — they currently pray in the cramped basement of an elementary school.

After three years of planning and fundraising, they purchased an abandoned warehouse on a dead-end street in 2015 for a new mosque, setting off heated debates, opposition, and the local bureaucratic process.

On Tuesday, a much-anticipated zoning board meeting about the mosque was postponed, for the third time.

Bill Finnerty, a lawyer hired by the group behind the mosque and community center, a non-profit called Bayonne Muslims, told BuzzFeed News the recent delay came about because they needed more time to complete a traffic study for the proposed site. The zoning board has “legitimate questions,” he said.

No new date for the zoning hearing has been set.

Zoning ordinances and other local bureaucracy are often cited for critiquing and rejecting mosque proposals around the nation, and proponents of the mosques say the issues are nothing more than masked discrimination.

Zoning issues vary from town to town, but reasons cited have ranged from concerns about traffic congestion and parking issues to proposals rejected because of temporary septic tank concerns and mosque structures that are deemed not “harmonious” with “existing buildings.”

In Bayonne, a city 10-miles southwest of Manhattan, “some people [against the mosque] are raising legitimate issues about parking and traffic,” Finnerty said, “but all the other reasons I’ve heard are basically fear and racism.”

Every Friday for the past eight years, 180 Muslim-Americans in Bayonne descend into the St. Henry's School basement. Underground, they hold prayers, talk, have meals, and break their fast in the month of Ramadan.

The basement can’t fit everyone on Friday prayers each week, so two separate services are held. The basement has become their mosque and community — one that they have come to love and cherish, but at the end of the day , it is still a basement, and they want to do more with their growing community.

Bayonne Muslims

Maham Tariq, 20, has lived in Bayonne for most of her life. She, like other Muslims in Bayonne wait for the day they can pray freely, in a place that offers more than just a roof over their head.

“ We want to create a place to feel safe, to belong, in a healthy and supportive environment,” said Tariq, a mental health counselor whose parents emigrated from Pakistan in 1997."

“The idea is to create a safe spot for this community," said Tariq, of the plans to build a Muslim community center with a prayer hall, classrooms, library and fitness center.

Wisniewski

What followed was a three and a half hour meeting where people for and against the mosque faced off during the question part of the meeting, attendees told BuzzFeed News.

Those opposed have cited Donald Trump’s comments about banning all Muslim immigrants, stopping immigrants from crossing the border, Islamic extremism, zoning issues, and concerns about traffic and noise.

More recently, “STOP THE MOSQUE” and “SAVE BAYONNE” signs can be seen around the city of 65,000 residents.

“Save Bayonne from what?,” said Alaa, 19, who didn’t want to provide her last name.

“What is that supposed to imply? Muslims have lived in Bayonne for 30 years,” she said pointing to her neighbor's sign. “We’ve lived here for 11 years and we’ve never experienced anything like this.”

Maham Tariq

Joseph Wisniewski, who lives a block away from the proposed site, told BuzzFeed News his primary concerns are about noise, traffic and potential violations of the city’s zoning laws.

“There's going to be a huge amount of cars coming and going. I would have the same issues if there was going to be a movie theater. Since it's a mosque it’s turned into a racial issue,” Wisniewski said. He was quoted earlier in the year citing the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Trump’s comments about immigration, and the shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee last year that was inspired by terrorist propaganda, as reasons behind his opposition.

“There's always the thought (of terrorism) in the back of people's minds, and I can’t ignore it,” he told BuzzFeed News of terrorism committed by Muslims. “You saw what happened yesterday in Istanbul. It’s a known fact that a majority of major terrorist attacks are from people who attended a mosque.”

Bayonne Muslims, in a concerted effort to quell the communities questions and apprehension about the mosque, released an informational report on the Bayonne Muslims Community Center.

The group also launched a website with an “Islam 101” section as well as a FAQ section that answers basic questions such as “Why are you building a Community Center in Bayonne?” “What are we planning on doing there? and “What activities will you hold?”

A recent post on the Bayonne Muslim’s site condemned the “barbaric attack in Orlando,” writing, “Such actions against fellow human beings of any background go against our faith, and are absolutely against our religion.”

Struggles to build mosques have occurred with regularity across the country for over a decade now.

In recent years, the opposition has become increasingly more vehement, occasionally erupting in hateful rhetoric and outbursts and using aforementioned zoning regulations to stall or defeat proposals.

After having their mosque proposals denied after years, some Muslim-American communities find themselves left with one option — file a lawsuit in federal court against their own towns and cities.

This is the path a Muslim community thirty miles east of Bayonne, in the New Jersey suburb of Basking Ridge, took after their proposal to build a mosque went through “39 public hearings, and nearly four years of demands by town officials and planning board members for one change after another,” the New York Times reported in March. Their lawsuit says the planning board broke “a law unanimously passed by Congress in 2000 protecting houses of worship from being unduly burdened by land use regulations,” according to the article.

The Jersey Journal reported that Bayonne’s Chief of Staff, Andrew Casais, said Alonso’s ”use the tragic attack in Orlando to capitalize on his local opposition to an application before the Zoning Board” was “shameful."

“This is just not the right time, this is not the right place,” said Alonso, who referenced ISIS, the Orlando massacre and Christians being beheaded, in an interview on June 17 with local affiliate ABC7.

“They meet right here. They’re growing rapidly. They fill up the whole basement. Their population is exploding,” Alonso said of Bayonne’s Muslims, adding that “residents don’t feel safe.”

The Jersey Journal also reported that Vincent Cuseglio, a local GOP chairman, filed a complaint against Alonso with the board of elections for alleged “instances of people voting twice and out-of-city residents casting ballots” during a committee election in early June. Alonso is an outspoken member of a new group called the “Real Republicans” that is battling with the GOP in the city.

Ray Worrall of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed with BuzzFeed News that allegations of fraud between two Republican groups are currently “under review,” after being “handed over” to the prosecutor’s office by the board of elections. Worrall would not comment on specifics, including people’s names.

Alonso, who has been an unsuccessful candidate in at least three local and state elections, also appears to be the person behind a fundraising page called “Stop The Mosque in Bayonne NJ.” The page, created in May by a “Michael Alonso” of “Bayonne, NJ,” has raised $10 of a $3,000 stated goal.

Mr. Alonso did not respond to repeated requests for comment on social media, by telephone, email, and notes left at his home.

The fight in Bayonne has also been raging online. Two Facebook groups opposing the mosque sprang up days after the building proposal was announced last year.

“Neighbors United Against Building the Mosque” is a private Facebook group with more than 600 members. A Hudson Reporter article from September 2015 quoted one member of the group writing, “Churches are being closed and mosques are being built. There’s a lot of infiltration going on around the world. It’s a known fact a lot of these mosques are funded by oil money and terrorists. I’m concerned about safety and the quality of life here in Bayonne.”

Another public Facebook group, called “Stop the Mosque in Bayonne,” describes itself as “not a HATE SITE.” The group’s lengthy description states:

There is a BIG difference between being anti Islam (macro-level) and against individual Muslims (micro-level). We do not discriminate against the individual.

...

We do take a stance against the rise of mosques which are advancing this second society within our own. We take a stance against the CLERICS who regularly use the Qur'an and Hadiths as a way to incite violence and non compliance with our laws. We take a stance against the embodiment of those passages in the Sharia legal system.

The description cites a common but otherwise unfounded fear of sharia law (Islamic jurisprudence) and Islamic courts taking root in the U.S.

In addition to a picture of the former twin towers with the hashtag “#NeverForget”, the group’s photos include a quote attributed to Winston Churchill that says Islam ”provides incentives to slaughter, and in three continents has produced fighting breeds of men filled with a wild and merciless fanaticism.”

Vulnerability Exposed By Airport Attackers May Be Impossible To Defend, Experts Say

There are armed guards, checkpoints, and baggage screenings, but despite continuous efforts to fortify airports, security experts say it may ultimately be impossible to completely secure the facilities against terrorist attacks.

After suicide bombers killed 32 people in Brussels in March, gunmen with explosives strapped to their chests killed 41 people Tuesday at Turkey's Ataturk airport — both striking just outside the secure perimeter.

Despite additional security measures taken at airports around the world, security experts told BuzzFeed News airports continue to be targeted by terror groups because the facilities have significant vulnerabilities.

"It's impossible to lockdown, to make an airport entirely [secure] because fundamentally, the purpose is to move people to the planes and on their travel," Henry Willis, director of Rand Corporation's Homeland Security and Defense Center told BuzzFeed News.

Experts say security checkpoints at airports have created new vulnerabilities like long lines and large gatherings of people that can become open targets for attack.

“When you create a secure area, you actually create another vulnerability," he said.

While airports continue to expand their secure area — from the aircraft, to boarding and ticketing areas — groups targeting transportation hubs have merely shifted their point of attack.

“People being there, are themselves a target,” Willis said.

In recent years, terror groups have shifted their focus from more secure facilities like embassies and government buildings, to soft targets like public places with less security.

But airports continue to pose an attractive target for terror groups because they can impact travel, the economy, and a country's morale, officials said. And some portions of airports continue to be as exposed as soft targets.

"Despite airports being hardened [secure], it has vulnerabilities, which is the real appeal for many groups," Jennifer Hesterman, a retired Air Force colonel and counterterrorism expert told BuzzFeed News.

Hesterman noted both the Brussels and Istanbul attacks targeted areas just outside the terminals, showing that heavy casualties can still be inflicted in the facilities.

"We're still focused on the wrong stuff," she said. "It's not the airplane anymore. It's the terminal."

The gunmen in Turkey, she said, also seemed to have made small but significant changes in tactics when compared to Brussels, suggesting Tuesday's attack was better planned.

In Istanbul, for example, the attackers focused on the arrivals section of the airport, which tends to be less scrutinized and less secure than departure areas.

"Anyone can walk into the baggage arrival area," she said. "Departures is usually where we're focused."

The attacks abroad have also increased concerns that similar attacks could be carried out inside the U.S. On Wednesday, CIA director John Brennan said he worried ISIS could plan a similar assault in the U.S.

"I'd be surprised if Daesh is not trying to carry out that kind of attack in the United States," he told Yahoo News, using another name for the terror group.

Officials in the U.S. have already been trying to make some changes to address that possibility.

After repeated funding and staffing cuts at the Transportation Security Administration, the Department of Homeland Security announced in May it would add 768 new agents in an effort to make security lines move faster in airports across the country.

A funding request to Congress could also make more than 2,700 part-time TSA employees full-time, and potentially further reduce crowds.

In response to the attack in Turkey, major U.S. airports deployed officers with tactical weapons to patrol the facilities, including areas outside terminals.

The issue of long lines is not just one of convenience, but security experts have for years recommended increasing personnel and cutting down wait times, pointing out that the crowd of waiting passengers poses a target for would-be attackers.

In 2004, for example, Los Angeles International Airport hired the Rand Corporation to evaluate security threats. Among the top findings was cutting down the number of people gathered at check-in and TSA checkpoint lines.

"If there aren't people waiting around to be processed, there's less targets," Willis said.

Not only would reducing lines cut the number of casualties in an attack, it could deter attackers altogether because the small number of potential casualties would not be worth the time or effort.

Rand found it would cost about $4 million to reduce crowding, but the following year, another report from another consulting company found that increasing personnel by 15% would cut down crowds by 75%.

But, the company determined, "a 75 percent decrease in lines was not worth implementing."

Some airports have already made moves to try and reduce the number of crowds. Self-service check-in counters, pre-paying for baggage and TSA pre-screening programs can help reduce gatherings in airports, where people are the most vulnerable, Willis said.

Part of the problem, Hesterman said, is that security at airports are too often focused on preventing events like past assaults, while terror groups are often focused on new ways to infiltrate and attack.

"We're too focused on the last attack," Hesterman said. "First we focused on airplanes being blown out of the sky, then we focused on terminal security."

Hesterman suggested airports should start their security measures outside airports, employing technology and vehicle checkpoints to dissuade terrorists from even attempting an attack.

Adding such measures, however, could make air travel inconvenient.

“There’s no easy objective answer as to whether it’s worth it or not,” Willis said. “If you want to increase security, it comes with costs, some of them economic, but some costs in convenience and intrusiveness as well.”

Texas Mom Who Fatally Shot Daughters Wanted Husband To Suffer, Officials Say

The Texas mother who gunned down her two daughters on a street near Houston on Friday was severely mentally ill and pulled the trigger because she wanted her husband "to suffer," authorities said Wednesday.

Christy Sheats, 42, convened a family meeting at her home in Katy Friday afternoon with her 45-year-old husband, Jason, and daughters Taylor, 22, and Madison, 17.

Her husband told police he thought his wife called the meeting "to discuss the decision to file for a divorce," the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Instead, she opened fire on her daughters using a .38 caliber handgun.

"[Jason] felt Christy wanted him to suffer," Sheriff Troy Nehls told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday. "Mr. Sheats stated Christy knew how much he loved Taylor and Madison and how much they loved him.

"Mr. Sheats will have to live the rest of his life with this horrible memory," Nehls said.

As the family members ran from the house, Madison died on the sidewalk outside. Jason was able to run to the end of a cul-de-sac, while Christy went in side for more bullets and then pursued Taylor, shooting her again.

Christy was subsequently shot dead by a Fulshear police officer when she refused to drop her weapon, authorities said.

Taylor was flown to a hospital, but could not be saved.

After interviews with Jason Sheats, authorities on Wednesday said they learned that in addition to battling depression and anxiety, Christy had attempted suicide three times.

Jason Sheats told authorities his wife had been treated at three different private mental health facilities in the past four years and was taking medication to treat her depression.

In the past four years, police were called to the Sheats home some 14 times, three of which were to respond to suicide attempts by Christy, Sheriff Nehls said.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Nehls told reporters that Christy Sheats' depression had worsened since the 2012 death of her grandfather.

Her Facebook page was full of emotional posts about her late grandfather, whom she described as her "hero and best friend," and "the person [she] loved and cherished most in this world"

She also posted multiple status updates on Facebook in support of gun rights.

Facebook

"It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away,” she wrote in March.

Authorities said Wednesday Christy inherited the handgun she used to kill her daughters from her grandfather.

She had applied for a license to carry her handgun in public, but was denied.

Nehls said his investigators were still determining why her permit request was rejected.

Three 911 calls released Tuesday provided a terrifying glimpse of the Sheats daughters' final moments.

In the calls, Jason Sheats can be heard pleading with his wife "not to shoot my family."

Detective Scott Heinemeyer told media that, although he survived, Jason should be regarded as a victim of the crime.

"We look at him as a victim in all this," Heinemeyer said. "I think it's just important that your thoughts and prayers go out with Mr. Sheats.

"He did state that she accomplished what she set out to do, and that is to make him suffer."

Defamation Lawsuit Against "Rolling Stone" For UVA Gang Rape Story Is Dismissed

Jay Paul / Getty Images

A judge has tossed out the defamation lawsuit brought against Rolling Stone over its debunked story about a gang rape at the University of Virginia.

The lawsuit was brought by three former members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity –- George Elias, Stephen Hadford, and Ross Fowler — against Rolling Stone and author Sabrina Rubin Erdely in 2015, claiming the article contained graphic and disturbing details that identified them as the attackers. However, a federal judge on Tuesday found that any descriptors in the article were too vague to be tied to any one person and dismissed the suit.

None of the parties involved in the lawsuit disputed that the rape did not occur or that Erdely based the story on the fictitious creation of a source called “Jackie.” In fact, five months after publication, Rolling Stone retracted the article and issued a written apology.

While the article mentioned no names or physical descriptions, the former frat members argued it “contained details that could prompt their friends, family and colleagues to erroneously infer that they participated in a gang rape.”

BuzzFeed News reached to the attorneys on both sides of the lawsuit, which had not publicly commented on the ruling as of Wednesday.

A $10-million libel and slander lawsuit against Rolling Stone brought by Nicole Eramo, a dean at UVA, is still pending.

"Law & Order" Director Gets Probation On Child Pornography Charges

Jason "Jace" Alexander, best known for directing several episodes of Law & Order, was sentenced Tuesday, to 10 years of probation on child pornography charges, according to the Westchester County District Attorney in New York.

Alexander, 52, pled guilty in January to two felony counts for possessing and file-sharing illegal and obscene performances of sexual conduct by children less than 17 years of age, the DA said in a press release.

Alexander had faced up to seven years in prison. But he wound up being sentenced Tuesday to 10 years' probation by the Westchester County Court. The director, who has three children with his wife — actress Maddie Corman — must also register as a sex offender in New York.

The DA's office refused to comment further on Alexander's sentence.

In July 2015, an investigator from the DA's office downloaded child pornography from an IP address that was assigned to Alexander's home.

Investigators recovered files from Alexander's computers and external hard drives that showed minors engaged in sexual acts.

Alexander is the son of Oscar-nominated and Tony-award winning actress Jane Alexander. He has directed at least 32 episodes of Law & Order from the mid-90s until 2005. He also directed episodes of Ally McBeal, Prison Break, Royal Pains, The Blacklist, and House, among others.

Marine Corps To Remove The Word “Man” From 19 Job Titles

Bruce Smith / AP Photo

The Marine Corps is expected to drop the word “man” from 19 of its military occupational specialties (MOSs) as the result of a mandated review following the announcement at the end of last year that the military would open all combat roles to women.

The Marine Times, who first reported the story with the confirmation of an anonymous Marines official, noted that at least 19 MOSs will become more gender-neutral.

A spokesperson for the Marine Corps Manpower and Reserve Affairs office confirmed the report to BuzzFeed News but said that the announcement of the new job titles has not been released through official channels.

For about 14 titles, such as basic infantry man or infantry assault man, the word “Marine” will replace “man.” In a few others, the name of the role will be edited to more accurately reflect the individual’s experience; field artillery operations man will become field artillery operations chief.

Not all job titles with the word “man” will undergo a gender-neutral change, according to the unnamed official.

“Names that were not changed, like rifleman, are steeped in Marine Corps history and ethos,” they told the Marine Times. “Things that were changed needed to be updated to align with other MOS names.”

Other positions, like unmanned aerial vehicle specialist and manpower officer, contain the word man but, according to the Marine Times, do not describe the person doing the job, and thus will not be changed.

The Manpower and Reserve Affairs spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that an official announcement could be released in the coming days.
