Trump Wrote Checks To Veterans Groups On Same Day He Came Under Scrutiny

Spencer Platt / Getty Images

Donald Trump on Tuesday blasted reporters who scrutinized where millions of dollars he claimed to raise for veterans in January went, but about half of the charities who received the donations hadn't been given the funds until last week after a Washington Post report questioned if the money had been distributed.

While the majority of the money was raised back in January, about half of the charity groups reached by the Associated Press said the checks were dated May 24 — the same day the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was questioned about the money in a Washington Post interview.

The checks were sent via overnight express, the groups said.

Trump campaign staffers had declined to release a list of organizations that had benefitted from the January fundraiser for months. On Tuesday, Trump called a press conference to release the names of 41 groups that received a total of $5.6 million in donations, and railed against journalists who had questioned where the money had gone.

Donald Trump campaign / Via donaldjtrump.com

"Instead of being like, 'Thank you very much, Mr. Trump,' or 'Trump did a good job,' everyone's saying, 'Who got it? Who got it? Who got it?' and you make me look very bad," Trump said. "I have never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job."

The fundraiser was held Jan. 28, the same day and at nearly the same time as Trump's Republican rivals appeared at a Fox News presidential debate. Trump, who at the time was embroiled in a dispute with the network and one of its most popular hosts, Megyn Kelly, refused to attend the debate and hosted the fundraiser instead.

Trump said during the fundraiser he had donated $1 million himself to veterans.

That donation, made to Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation was not made until May 24, the AP reported.

In all, the news agency spoke with 30 of the 41 organizations listed by Trump, and about half of them said they didn't receive a check until last week.

The Washington Post's David Fahrenthold had been reaching out to veteran's organizations to find out where the $5.6 million had been donated, including the $1 million donated by Trump himself.

Campaign staffers would not say where the money had been donated, and when Fahrenthold took to Twitter to reach out to organizations to see if they had been beneficiaries, Trump responded.

Trump's campaign had itself issued contradictory statements and issued what on Tuesday was shown to be false statements about the money.

On the day of the Jan. 28 fundraiser, Trump said he had raised $6 million for veterans, a figure that ended up being $400,000 less.

Earlier this month, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told the Post that Trump's $1 million donation had already been distributed, which turned out to not be true.

Trump then told the Washington Post on May 24 he made his $1 million donation the day before, nearly four months after the actual fundraiser. The check, however, was dated May 24, the charity told the AP.

After the donation was made, Trump apparently called Fahrenthold to talk about the donations.

"Not until Trump called me on Tuesday afternoon to say he'd just given the whole million at once," did Fahrenthold find out the money had still not been donated, he said in a Washington Post account of the story.

When the reporter asked Trump whether he donated the money only after reporters starting asking about it, Trump answered, "You know, you're a nasty guy. You're a really nasty guy. I gave out millions of dollars that I had no obligation to do."

Volunteer Deputy Gets 4 Years In Prison For Killing Unarmed Suspect

Sue Ogrocki / AP

A former volunteer deputy in Oklahoma was sentenced to four years in prison Tuesday for fatally shooting an unarmed black man after mistakenly grabbing his gun instead of his taser.

The fatal shooting on April 2, 2015, was captured on body camera footage as Bates ran to help authorities apprehend an unarmed suspect trying to flee deputies during an illegal gun sales sting.

The suspect, Eric Harris, died from his injury.

The prison sentence handed down to 74-year-old Robert Bates was the maximum punishment for the former wealthy insurance executive who was convicted of second-degree manslaughter, the Tulsa World reported. It was also recommended by the jury.

Bates' attorney told reporters he planned to appeal the sentence.

Several of Bates' friends, family, and acquaintances had asked the judge for leniency ahead of Tuesday's hearing, including a former sheriff who resigned after the fatal shooting, calling it a "terrible mistake."

Former Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz, who called the incident "a terrible injustice for a man that made a terrible mistake," resigned after he was questioned over why he authorized an elderly volunteer to participate in undercover stings. A memo had also questioned Bates' field qualifications.

Bates had donated thousands of dollars and vehicles to the department.

According to court documents reviewed by BuzzFeed News, one of the jurors also asked that Bates get probation, telling the judge: "I regret that I didn't speak up because in my mind and heart I truly do not believe Mr. Bates is guilty."

Bates' doctor also submitted a letter to the court stating his concern about his client's age and "cardiovascular and medical issues," and the ability of the prison system to adequately address them.

Bates is expected to get credit for time already served behind bars.

Feds Fight To Keep $275,000 In Life Insurance From San Bernardino Gunman's Family

FBI and California Department of Motor Vehicles via AP

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday filed a lawsuit to keep the family of Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the shooters in the San Bernardino, California, terrorist attack, from collecting $275,000 in life insurance payouts.

The U.S. Attorney's Office filed the civil asset forfeiture lawsuit for two life insurance policies that Farook took out while he was an employee of San Bernardino County in 2012 and 2013. Farook died with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, in a shootout with authorities after the couple killed 14 people at the Inland Regional Center in December.

Farook's mother was named as the primary beneficiary for both policies.

U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker described the proposed seizure as part of her office's attempt to seek justice for the victims of the attack using every available tool.

"Terrorists must not be permitted to provide for their designated beneficiaries through their crimes,” Decker said in a statement. “My office intends to explore every legal option available to us to ensure these funds are made available to the victims of this horrific crime."

Jae C. Hong / AP

Farook and Malik are also survived by their daughter, who was six months old at the time of the attack.

According to prosecutors, Farook was radicalized by 2011, before he took out the insurance policies. That same year, he began discussing potential terrorist actions, such as bombing a busy section of a Southern California freeway or shooting up a community college, prosecutors said.

Farook discussed those possibilities with a friend, Enrique Marquez, who prosecutors said would go on to buy Farook two assault rifles. Marquez has pleaded not guilty to federal charges and is awaiting trial.

Minutes after the start of the attack on Dec. 2, Malik posted the couple's allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, on Facebook, prosecutors said.

Under U.S. law, assets that come from the commission of terrorism may be seized by the government. A judge will consider prosecutors' application to seize Farook's life insurance money.

Woman Arrested For Firing Gun After Watching Fiancé Get Shot To Death

Ashley Harrison.

Chicago Police

Ashley Harrison was in a car with her 27-year-old fiancé in Chicago on Saturday when someone ran up to the window and shot him in head.

As the suspect fled the scene, Harrison, 26, grabbed a .357-Magnum handgun and fired several shots into the air, prosecutors say.

Harrison's fiancé and father of her two children, Gavin Whitmore, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Whitmore is one of six people who died in Chicago this weekend as gun violence swept across the city. According to reports, at least 68 people were shot in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend.

According to Harrison's family, the couple was en route to pick up an aunt and spend the holiday weekend with family when the shooting occurred.

Harrison was taken into custody and charged with two felonies — reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon — and her bail was set at $250,000. At her bail hearing, the judge said that the shots "sounded like self defense."

Her sister, Tiffany Scott, wrote that her family posted the bond and that she is being held on house arrest. The family has also created a GoFundMe page to raise money for her defense.

“While we as a family are grateful to have her home to comfort her, the case has not been dropped,” Scott wrote.

No suspect has been arrested in the shooting of Whitmore. Prosecutors, however, said a surveillance camera captured footage of the incident.

Sheriff Launches Investigation Into "The Biggest Loser" After Reports Of Drug Use

instagram.com

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has opened an investigation after a report claimed contestants on The Biggest Loser were given drugs to aid their weight loss.

Last week, several former contestants told the New York Post that the show had encouraged them to take drugs including Adderall and pills containing ephedra, a weight-loss drug that has been banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Staff encouraged a variety of unhealthy behaviors that have left some contestants with enduring health and emotional issues, the report said.

Los Angeles sheriff's deputies were informed earlier this month by a journalist that drugs had been used on Malibu-area set, and officials could so far provide no further information. Any use of illegal narcotics on the show has not been substantiated, the LASD said Tuesday.

"People would take amphetamines, water pills, diuretics, and throw up in the bathroom,” Season 2’s Suzanne Mendonca told the Post.

The show's producers, Endemol Shine, denied that any illegal or unsafe activity took place.

“The safety and well-being of our contestants is, and always has been, paramount,” the producers said in a statement. “We prohibit the use of any illegal substances, in addition to the many other rules and procedures of the show that are designed to ensure safety.”

The report of drug use followed a study that showed contestants' metabolisms slowed during and after the show, making weight loss even harder to maintain.

Several other contestants also spoke out on social media, defending the show and the lifestyle changes it champions.

"[T}he biggest loser never made or asked me to take anything illegal," contestant Vinny Hickerson wrote on Facebook. "This is what happenes [sic] when you stop making excuses, stop blaming other people and become a meticulous dedicated responsible person."

Cincinnati Police Are Investigating Parents Of Boy Who Fell In Gorilla Enclosure

Supporters of Harambe, the dead gorilla, have blamed the parents for what they say is a failure to properly supervise the boy.

John Minchillo / AP

Police in Cincinnati, Ohio, said Tuesday they are investigating the parents of a young boy who fell into a zoo's gorilla enclosure, prompting workers to fatally shoot a male gorilla to protect the child.

The death of Harambe the gorilla on Saturday has attracted international attention, with many criticizing the zoo for its decision to kill the animal.

The four-year-old boy's parents have also been heavily criticized after the child was able to crawl under a railing and through wires before falling into the exhibit's moat.

In a statement on Tuesday, police said they had launched a review "regarding the actions of the parents/family that led up to the incident."

Officers said their investigation does not concern the operation or safety of the zoo itself.

Police have asked witnesses and those with video recordings of the incident to contact authorities.

John Minchillo / AP

The boy and his family have not been officially identified by authorities or the zoo, but the parents did release a statement to local media on Sunday.

"We know that this was a very difficult decision for [zoo officials to shoot the animal], and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla," the family said.

The zoo on Monday defended the decision by staff to shoot the animal, saying the child's life was in danger.

"We're the ones who took this loss and we made a very difficult call in handling it," zoo director Thane Maynard told reporters.

Drew Peterson Convicted Of Trying To Have His Prosecutor Killed

Peterson in 2009.

M. Spencer Green / AP

Drew Peterson, the former Illinois police officer jailed for killing one of his wives and suspected in the death of another, was convicted Tuesday of trying to hire a hit man to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow successfully prosecuted Peterson in 2012 for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004.

While in prison between September 2013 and December 2014, Peterson arranged for a fellow inmate, Antonio Smith, to hire a relative to kill Glasgow. Unbeknownst to Peterson, Smith was working with authorities to secretly record their conversations, some of which were played in court.

"I told [my relative] what you said, that it's the green light on, that basically go ahead and kill him," Smith said in one recording, according to the Chicago Tribune. "That's what you wanted, right? ... It ain't no turning back."

"OK, all right. I'm in," Peterson was heard responding in the recording. "From the first time we talked about it, there was no turning back. ...If I get some booze in here, we'll celebrate that night."

Peterson was indicted in February 2015 on one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder.

He is currently serving a 38-year prison sentence over Savio's murder — a case first ruled an accident but which was reopened in 2007 after the disappearance of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

No one has been charged in Stacy's death, but Drew Peterson remains the prime suspect.

Following Tuesday's conviction, Peterson may have an additional 60 years added to his prison term.

In a statement, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan praised the prosecutors "for their hard work and relentless commitment to bringing this case to a successful conclusion.”

“The evidence in this case was clear," she said.

"Shield" Actor Michael Jace Found Guilty Of Murdering His Wife

David Mcnew / AP

Actor Michael Jace, who played a police officer on the hit show The Shield, was found guilty Tuesday of second-degree murder for the shooting death of his wife.

Jace was arrested May 19, 2014, after his wife, April Jace, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds at their Los Angeles home.

During the weeklong trial, Jace's defense attorney acknowledged Jace shot his wife, but argued it was not premeditated and should instead be considered involuntarily manslaughter because it was committed in the heat or passion.

Brentt / AP

However, the prosecution painted a very different picture at trial.

After April Jace — a 40-year-old financial aid counselor at Biola University — had made it clear she planned to file for divorce, the actor waited with a loaded handgun and opened fire when she returned home.

After the shooting, Michael Jace called 911 to report the incident, but April was dead by the time police arrived.

At the time, the actor had been unemployed and struggling with his finances.

The actor's two young sons were also home when the shooting occurred and are now living with relatives, according to police. His 10-year-old son testified at trial.

Michael Jace faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced.

Donald Trump Was Asked About The Cincinnati Zoo Gorilla Because Why Not

“I don’t think they had a choice.”

After announcing he had raised $5.6 million for veterans organizations, he blasted reporters for asking critical questions about the money, calling one ABC News reporter sleazy.

In a campaign season known for its "anything goes" style, Trump going off on journalists is par for the course. But it was a question that came from the press corps that somehow managed to throw some people off.

"I think it's a very tough call," Trump said. "It was amazing because there were moments with the gorilla — the way he held that child, it was almost like a mother holding a baby. Looked so beautiful and calm. And there were moments where it looked pretty dangerous."

"I don't think they had a choice," he added. "It's too bad there wasn't another way."

"Amber Is A Hero” Says Amber Heard's Lawyers Amid Abuse Allegations Against Johnny Depp

Suzanne Plunkett / Reuters

Amber Heard's legal team released a joint statement Tuesday morning to explain why the actress didn't initially talk to police when they responded to her 911 call. Heard's attorneys said anonymous sources have spread misinformation attempting to miscast "the victim as the villain."

"Amber is the victim. Amber is a hero," said Heard’s lead attorney Samantha F. Spector and her co-counsel Joseph P. Koenig.

Heard, they explain, was attempting to "protect her privacy and Johnny's career" when she initially declined to speak to police at the downtown penthouse she shared with Depp.

Heard, who filed papers last week to end her15-month marriage to Depp, claimed the actor had been "verbally and physically abusive" during their whole relationship. She went to court on Friday and obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp, telling a judge he abuses drugs and alcohol and has a “short fuse” that blows any time she questions his authority.

The full statement from Heard's attorneys:

As the result of Amber’s decision to decline giving an initial statement to the LAPD, her silence has been used against her by Johnny’s team. Amber did not provide a statement to the LAPD in an attempt to protect her privacy and Johnny’s career. Johnny’s team has forced Amber to give a statement to the LAPD to set the record straight as to the true facts, as she cannot continue to leave herself open to the vicious false and malicious allegations that have infected the media. Amber has suffered through years of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Johnny.

In domestic violence cases, it is not unusual for the perpetrator's playbook to include miscasting the victim as the villain.

In reality, Amber acted no differently than many victims of domestic violence, who think first of the harm that might come to the abuser, rather than the abuse they have already suffered. Amber can no longer endure the relentless attacks and outright lies launched against her character in the Court of Public Opinion since the tragic events of May 21st. With her statement Amber hopes to give the LAPD the opportunity to conduct an accurate and complete investigation into the events of that evening and before. If that occurs, and the truth is revealed, there is no doubt that Amber’s claims will be substantiated beyond any doubt, and hopefully Johnny will get the help that he so desperately needs.

From the beginning it has been Amber's desire to keep this matter as private as possible, even though LAPD officers responded to a 911 call made by a third-party. The LAPD officers viewed not only the disarray that Johnny had caused in the apartment but also the physical injuries to Amber’s face. We filed the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage at the very end of the day on Monday May 23rd and we did not serve Johnny with the Petition at the premiere of Alice Through the Looking Glass that evening. We sent a letter to Johnny's counsel team the next morning making it clear we wanted to keep this matter out of the media. We then held off requesting a domestic violence restraining order as we knew that Johnny was out of the country.

We took the high road. Unfortunately, Johnny's team immediately went to the press and began viciously attacking Amber’s character. Amber is simply a victim of domestic violence, and none of her actions are motivated by money. Amber is a brave and financially independent woman who is showing the courage of her convictions by doing the right thing against Johnny's relentless army of lawyers and surrogates.

Deadly Flooding Hits Texas As Officials Brace For More Rain

David J. Phillip / AP

Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Texas have left four people dead and two others missing as authorities brace for the Brazos River to crest mid-Tuesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that more than 18-inches of rain was recorded 65-miles northwest of Houston, with more expected on Tuesday.

Several roads were flooded and bridges were washed out. Emergency crews in Bastrop County, meanwhile, were "overwhelmed with water rescues and other emergency calls," according to the NWS.

About 40 people were rescued from Sunday to Monday in a low-lying neighborhood in Simonton, which saw up to three feet of water.

Photos posted by astronaut Terry W. Virts showed the massive scale of the flood zone.

Four of the six dead were recovered in Washington County, County Judge John Brieden told the Associated Press. Two of the bodies were found Saturday in different parts of the county, he added.

An 11-year-old boy who fell into a Kansas creek was also presumed dead.

Flood warnings for the areas along the Brazos river remained in place in anticipation of waters cresting, possibly at 53.5 feet.

Cruise Ship Enters Alaska Port With Dead Endangered Whale On Bow

A whale carcass is seen on the bow of a cruise ship at a port in Seward, Alaska.

Matt Faust / AP

Scientists were working Monday to determine how an endangered fin whale that was discovered on the bow of a cruise ship entering an Alaska port died.

The whale carcass was spotted about 5 a.m. Sunday on the bow of the Holland America Line cruise ship Zaandam as it prepared to dock in Seward.

After the carcass was towed to a nearby beach, a veterinary pathologist started a necropsy, with armed officers standing guard against scavenging bears.

Matt Faust / AP

The juvenile whale may have already been already dead when it was caught by the bulbous bow, an underwater extension of the main bow that is designed to avoid wave-making.

"That's something, hopefully, the necropsy will determine," Julie Speegle, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press on Monday.

An officer had been preparing the ship for docking just after 4:30 a.m. and did not see a whale, Sally Andrews, a spokeswoman for Holland America, told the AP.

"Our ships have clear guidelines on how to operate if whales are sighted nearby, which include altering course and reducing speed as required," she said.

Fin whales, which feed on schooling fish and small invertebrates, can grow to nearly 90 feet long, making it the second largest animal on the planet, behind only the blue whale. It was listed as endangered due to over fishing in the 20th century.

Cincinnati Zoo Is Defending Its Decision To Kill A Gorilla After A Boy Fell Into An Exhibit

On Saturday afternoon, a 4-year-old boy fell 10 feet into the zoo’s gorilla exhibit.

Two female gorillas in the exhibit were immediately recalled, but the male, named Harambe, managed to make his way toward the boy and began picking up him and dragging him around, according to a Cincinnati Zoo statement.

To save the boy, Harambe was fatally shot by the zoo's Dangerous Animal Response Team.

However, many people have criticized the zoo's decision to kill the animal, rather than tranquilize it.

Speaking to reporters Monday, zoo director Thane Maynard said staff had no choice but to kill the animal in order to save the boy.

“We’re the ones who took this loss and we made a very difficult call in handling it," he said.

Maynard described Harambe as “clearly agitated, clearly disoriented."

"The idea of waiting to shoot it with a hypodermic would not have been a good idea,” he said, adding that even an anesthetic would have yielded a delayed response.

“The risk was due to the power of that animal,” he said of the 420-pound gorilla.

Cincinnati Zoo

In the zoo’s 143-year history, there had never before been a situation in which zoo staff had to kill an animal, Maynard said. There had been an incident, however, in which a keeper lost an arm to a polar bear.

There is no formal memorial service scheduled for Harambe, whose body is still at the zoo, but Maynard said that staff had come together on Monday “to share memories and talk about it, and cry a little bit.”

Harambe’s sperm has also been preserved, which means his death is not also the end of his gene pool. Maynard said that he and his lineage are part of an ongoing breeding program for the endangered animal.

Ron Magill, communications director for the Miami Metro Zoo, said that he would have made the same call to kill the animal.

"I don't think that gorilla had any intention of hurting that child but the bottom line is he was frightened, he was agitated, his strength is unbelievable,” he told CNN.

“You can see the way he whipped that child through the water like a rag doll. Just the whipping, the child could whip his head against the concrete. It could have been over in a second."

Eric Holder Now Says Edward Snowden Performed A "Public Service"

But the former Attorney General urged the whistleblower to return to the U.S. and face the consequences of his actions.

Kris Connor / Getty Images

Former federal Attorney General Eric Holder says whistleblower Edward Snowden performed a "public service" by leaking U.S. surveillance secrets because his actions ignited a public debate on surveillance and privacy.

"We can certainly argue about the way in which Snowden did what he did, but I think that he actually performed a public service by raising the debate that we engaged in and by the changes that we made," Holder told David Axelrod, former senior advisor to President Obama, on The Axe Files podcast.

The former CIA contractor's 2013 leak revealed, among other things, that the National Security Agency was collecting telephone records of tens of millions of Americans.

However Holder, who headed the Justice Department when Snowden leaked U.S. surveillance secrets in 2013, said the whistleblower also harmed American interests through his actions.

"I know there are ways in which certain of our agents were put at risk, relationships with other countries were harmed, our ability to keep the American people safe was compromise," he said.

The Guardian / Getty Images

Holder urged Snowden, who has been in exile in Russia, to return to the United States go to trial and face the consequences of his actions.

"He's broken the law in my view," Holder said. "He needs to get lawyers, come on back, and decide, see what he wants to do: Go to trial, try to cut a deal. I think there has to be a consequence for what he has done."

The FBI Caught A Fugitive They Say Murdered His Pregnant Girlfriend In Front Of Friends

The FBI on Sunday captured a suspect from its most wanted list, arresting a man suspected of brutally murdering his pregnant girlfriend at an April gathering of friends in Los Angeles.

An FBI spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that U.S. Customs Border Patrol agents apprehended Philip Patrick Policarpio as he was trying to cross the border to Tijuana, Mexico. He was in the U.S. when he was captured.

On April 12, Policarpio, 39, allegedly killed his girlfriend, Lauren Olgiun, who was 17 weeks pregnant at the time.

The two were said to have gotten into an argument at a social gathering when Policarpo began beating her with his fists “in front of everyone,” Special Agent Scott Garriola, a member of the FBI’s Los Angeles Fugitives Task Force, said in a news release. Then Policarpo fatally shot her in the head.

FBI

At the time of the killing, Policarpio had been on parole for a 2001 crime.

“His pattern is one of violence,” said Garriola, “and he is always armed. He is the definition of a continuing threat to the community.”

The FBI added him to its Top Ten Most Wanted List on May 19, offering a $100,000 reward to anybody with information leading to his arrest.

Policarpio was also wanted for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, a federal crime.

Policarpio was thought to have possibly traveled to Las Vegas, where he has family, or to the Philippines, where he had previous ties.

Officials said that the FBI would provide more information about Policarpio’s capture on Tuesday.

As part of his speech, which touched on the value of public service, Garland turned to Harry Potter to inspire the students.

(Click through to the 11-minute mark for the Harry Potter references).

"In fact, the Minister of Magic once did. 'Are you planning to follow a career in Magical Law, Ms. Granger?' he asked. 'No, I'm not,' retorted Hermione. 'I'm hoping to do some good in the world.' "

"Now that doesn't mean that you and your friends have to vanquish Lord Voldemort. Not everyone has the very particular set of skills required to accomplish that task.

"But as Professor Dumbledore once told Harry Potter: It is our choices that show what we truly are, more than our abilities.

"So make the choice do to some good in the world."

President Obama nominated Garland to the Court on March 16 to take the seat vacated by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Republicans have opposed the nomination of the centrist judge, arguing the next president should appoint the new justice.

On March 28, Senate Democrats said they were hopeful the Republicans would allow a confirmation vote on Garland's candidacy to the top U.S. court by Memorial Day.

"I was like, why don’t we record it all fourth quarter and give it to him as a present at the end of the year?" Rios told BuzzFeed News. "And Bella thought it was a great idea, so that’s how it happened."

"I guess they had been filming it all along, and they just stitched their favorite ones together," he said. "I'd kind of caught on that they were recording me towards the end, but I didn’t know what they were doing with it. So it really was kind of a surprise."

"He was laughing the whole time and smiling and thanking us," Rios said.

Anti-Trump Protesters Clash With Supporters Outside San Diego Rally

Several arrests were made as authorities worked to keep tensions from boiling over Friday.

Lenny Ignelzi / AP

Donald Trump supporters clashed with protesters Friday in San Diego after the presumptive Republican presidential spoke at a rally, leading to several arrests as authorities tried to keep tensions from boiling over.

Punches and objects were thrown between the opposing sides as police in riot gear tried to separate both sides.

In anticipation of the campaign event at the convention center in downtown, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman announced Wednesday that officers would have zero tolerance when it came to violence or disruptive behavior.

"For anyone who comes to disrupt, to do illegal activities, we will take swift and decisive action to make sure we have a peaceful event," she said in a press conference.

In an effort to maintain peace, the city also set up "free speech zones" in front of the convention center, where Trump spoke Friday afternoon.

"Glee" Actor Mark Salling Indicted On Child Pornography Charges

Richard Shotwell / AP

Glee actor Mark Wayne Salling was indicted Friday on federal charges of receiving and possessing child pornography on his laptop computer and a flash memory drive.

Salling, who played Noah Puckerman on Glee, was named in the two-count indictment following an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Child Exploitation Investigations Group, a multi-agency task force.

The indictment alleges that Salling, 33, used the internet to receive a pornographic still image and a video of a young girl on Dec. 26, 2015. The second count charges Salling with possessing two pornographic videos depictingof young girls on Dec. 29, 2015, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The laptop, a hard drive, and a USB flash drive seized from Salling’s residence also contained thousands of images and videos depicting child pornography, according to federal authorities, who are continuing to review the material.

Matt Sayles / AP

Salling was initially arrested by Los Angeles police in December and released on bond. However, once investigators realized the scope of the child pornography, the matter was referred to federal authorities for further action, which resulted in the indictment indictment, prosecutors said.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, if you hurt a child you will be held accountable,” LAPD Lt. Andrea Grossman said in a statement. “These images are more than photographs, they are child abuse.”

A representative for Salling could not immediately be reached Friday.

Through his attorney, Salling has agreed to surrender to federal authorities on June 3 for arraignment.

“While people are often surprised when high-profile individuals come under scrutiny in such investigations, we hope cases like this will raise awareness about law enforcement’s vigilance to combat the online sexual exploitation of children and hold those involved, regardless of their position, accountable for their actions," said Joseph Macias, Special Agent in Charge for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

Salling faces up 20 years in federal prison for both charges if convicted.

Amber Heard Obtains Retraining Order Against Johnny Depp, Citing Physical Abuse

Matt Roberts / Getty Images

LOS ANGELES — Amber Heard was granted a restraining order against Johnny Depp on Friday after claiming he physically abused her.

Heard filed papers to end their 15-month marriage earlier this week, but the circumstances behind her decision to seek a retraining order were not immediately available in the court record.

TMZ reported Heard alleged that Depp, 52, struck her in the face this past weekend, one day after his mother died. She was escorted from a Los Angeles courthouse by three deputies after a judge granted the stay away order.

Citing irreconcilable differences, Heard, 30, filed for divorce on Monday, one day after the couple separated, according to her petition.

Heard's attorney said outside the courtroom that the actress showed "real courage" for seeking the restraining order.

Representatives for Depp did not immediately return a request for comment.

Herd and Depp met while filming The Rum Diary in 2011, and married four years later on his island in the Bahamas.

The last time the pair was seen together was in April in an awkward apology video the couple was forced to make after smuggling their dogs into Australia. Heard also pleaded guilty to producing a false document.

Earlier this week, Depp's representative said the actor would not be addressing any "salacious false stories" about his personal life.

"Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life,” Robin Baum said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. “Hopefully, the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly."

Heimlich, a resident of a senior living community in Ohio, was sitting next to 87-year-old Patty Ris during dinner on Monday when she began to choke on her hamburger.

Heimlich then performed his maneuver on her and dislodged the piece of meat stuck in her windpipe.

While Heimlich — who invented the technique in the 1970s — had plenty of practice demonstrating the maneuver, Monday was the first time he had ever performed it on someone who was actually choking, he told the Enquirer.

Perry Gaines, the maître d' for the Deupree House dining room, said that Ris was having one of her favorite dishes, an open face hamburger, when she began choking.

"I felt like I was on stage," Gaines said in a recorded interview provided to BuzzFeed News. "Everyone stopped eating and everyone was looking at Dr. Heimlich and the maneuver that he was doing. It was totally quiet in the dining room at that time."

While he has performed the maneuver before, Gaines said Monday was the first time "the person who originated it was doing it before my eyes."

"It was almost like history was being made."

As for the hero of the day?
