Halloween Hayride Crash Leaves 3 Dead, Several Injured In Mississippi

Three people were killed and several others injured Monday night when a truck crashed into a trailer carrying children and adults on a Halloween hayride in rural Mississippi, authorities said.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Staff Sgt. Andy West told BuzzFeed News a Jeep was towing a hayride trailer when a Ford pickup collided with the trailer from behind around 7:45 p.m. Both vehicles were traveling westbound on Highway 80 in Chunky, east of Jackson.

Two children and one adult were killed in the crash, Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker told BuzzFeed News. Several others were injured, local media reported.

West said three helicopters transported the injured to Jackson and Meridian hospitals.

Police Release Audio Of Orlando Gunman Inside Nightclub During Massacre

Joe Raedle / Getty Images

The gunman who opened fire at an Orlando nightclub in June, killing 49 people in the worst mass shooting in modern US history, told police he was trying to send a message against US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria and compared himself to other American terrorists.

"My homeboy Tamerlan Tsarnaev did his thing on the Boston Marathon, my homeboy Moner Abusalha did his thing, okay, so now it's my turn, okay?" Omar Mateen told a police crisis negotiator during the bloody siege on the Pulse nightclub.

Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 others inside the gay nightclub before being fatally shot by police. About half an hour after the first report of shots fired he called 911 to identify himself as the gunman and pledge allegiance to ISIS and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Three more calls followed with a crisis negotiator; on Monday, police released that audio for the first time.

w.soundcloud.com

"Can you tell me what you know about what's going on tonight?" the negotiator asked.

"What's going on is that I feel the pain of the people getting killed in Syria and Iraq and all over the Muslim ummah," Mateen replied, using the Arabic word for community.

Omar Mateen / Via Myspace

Transcripts of the conversations — which took place over the course of an hour — were previously released by authorities. The new audio reveals several gaps in the timeline as well as Mateen taking a disdainful tone with police as he made threats about planted explosives in the parking lot and wearing some kind of explosive vest.

"If you bring the bomb dog, they are not going to smell shit," he said. "You can't smell it. Bring your little American bomb dog, they are fucking outdated anyway."

Mateen also referenced ISIS online propaganda. He told police the death in May of Abu Waheeb — the ISIS executioner known for appearing in grisly videos — was the trigger for his attack in Orlando. Mateen added he had fasted and prayed before the attack in observance of Ramadan; ISIS leaders had urged supporters in the US and Europe to plan lone wolf attacks during the holy month.

w.soundcloud.com

In between calls, police could be heard speaking in frustration about the lack of response from Mateen to questions about his location, potential bombs, and if he had accomplices.

"He's not confirming anything," a man said.

An Election Flyer In Kansas Depicts ISIS As The New Neighbors

The Kansas Republican Party mailed election flyers attacking various democratic candidates for “moving terrorists to Kansas” and depicting members of ISIS and scenes of war.

Other flyers praise legislative Republican candidates for keeping ”Kansans safe.”

One flyer, first reported by The Wichita Eagle, depicts a man with an assault rifle wearing a keffiyeh — a tradition middle-eastern headdress and scarf — in a way that covers his faces. In the background is an ISIS flag next to a bucolic silhouette of a windmill.

“Have you met the new neighbors? ISIS is not going away anytime soon,” the flyer reads.

On the other side of the flyer is a smiling Joseph Scapa — a state house Republican running for reelection. Across from Scapa’s picture is a smiling child with her arms open, holding an american flag in one hand and a cowboy hat in the other.

The flyer says Scapa “understands the threat we face here in Kansas,” and in another portion declares, “Let’s Keep Terrorists Out of Kansas!”

Many of the flyers address fears associated with an Obama administration proposal to close Guantanamo Bay, and possibly send detainees to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, one of a handful of proposed locations.

Scapa did not immediately reply to requests for comment about his inclusion in the Kansas GOP flyers, but he told The Wichita Eagle on Friday that refugees are “coming into our state from parts of the world who believe in ideologies that are incompatible with the United States Constitution and our Kansas values and that poses a threat.”

“We know for a fact that we cannot vet the people that are coming into our state from other parts of the world … where they believe in ideologies that we don’t,” Scapa told the paper.

The executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, Clay Barker, also did not respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for comment, but told the Wichita Eagle last Friday that flyers like these were being sent around the state.

Barker said that polling and studies conducted by his group showed one issue got a positive response from Republicans: Safety.

“You know, Gitmo, that article that came out back in August that ISIS had named soldiers for assassinations, police being shot and those knuckleheads in Garden City, it all kind of added up to a security issue … the whole feeling that’s there violence out there. And it’s a positive issue for Republicans,” Barker was quoted as saying.

Barker’s mention of Garden City refers to the October arrest of three white men belonging to a militia in Kansas that allegedly plotted to bomb and kill Somali-immigrants living in a large apartment complex on election day. The men, who called the Somalis “cockroaches,” according to the complaint, hoped the bombing would “wake people up” and start a religious war.

"If you're a Muslim I'm going to enjoy shooting you in the head,” one of the men allegedly said in the Justice Department complaint. "When we go on operations there's no leaving anyone behind, even if it's a one-year old, I'm serious. I guarantee if I go on a mission those little fuckers are going bye-bye."

Robert McCaw, Director of Government Affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, worries that these GOP flyers are particularly disturbing because they embolden an already growing and increasingly violent anti-Muslim sentiment in the country.

“I think it's shameful that the Republican Party is engaging in islamophobia through its direct mailers," McCaw said. “This type of mailer is responsible for these sort of actions that have targeted Muslims in the state, and Republicans should be held accountable."

“The next time authorities disrupt a plot [against Muslims] they might find these in the car," McCaw added.

A flyer mailed in New Hampshire.

CAIR

The mailing of election flyers to potential voters using the fear of ISIS or terrorists to garner votes is not new.

In October, a Republican-leaning political action committee mailed a flyer to New Hampshire residents depicting what it called “Radical Islamic terrorists” with assault rifles and crosshairs over children and the American flag.

Using fears associated with terrorism are even used to attack candidates within the same party. In July, a Republican running for state senate in Tennessee apparently mailed an attack flyer saying his GOP rival will roll out the “welcome mat” for Syrian refugees which will lead to “ISIS living next door to your family.” The flyer also had faux-Arabic script spelling the words “Welcome” on a door mat.

Another mailed flyer attacked Stan Reeser, a Democrat running for the state house, and asks “Can we trust Stan Reeser to put our safety ahead of party politics?”

Another portion of the flyer is a silhouette of a man in what appears to be the scene of a war. “Stan Reeser’s party has embraced an extreme agenda that will move some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists to Kansas,” it reads.

Reeser told BuzzFeed News that the flyers were “extremely disappointing,” and called them “very sleazy in so many ways.”

“In general I see it as a scare tactic, as a distraction,” Reeser said. “It's also scary to the point that it promotes prejudice, it promotes bigotry,” Reeser said, while also pointing out that Senate Democrats in Kansas have sent a letter to Obama in opposition to sending Guantanamo prisoners to Fort Leavenworth.

Thousands Are Using Facebook Check-Ins To Show Solidarity With Oil Pipeline Protesters

A viral Facebook post is urging people to check in to Standing Rock Indian Reservation to show solidarity and supposedly confuse local police.

A widely-shared Facebook status on Monday alleged that local police were using social media to target protesters and disrupt prayer camps. The post urged people everywhere to use Facebook check-ins to "overwhelm and confuse" the Morton County Sheriff's Department.

In a Facebook post Monday, the sheriff's department denied using Facebook check-ins to target protest camps.

"The Morton County Sheriff’s Department is not and does not follow Facebook check-ins for the protest camp or any location. This claim / rumor is absolutely false," the post said.

However, the Sacred Stone Camp — one of the main organizers of the protest — told BuzzFeed News that they believe local police combed social media "for incriminating material and [to] monitor communications."

The Sacred Stone Camp said that there were several instances where police used social media to attempt to identify people from videos and issue arrest warrants days or weeks after alleged incidents.

"We cannot verify if they have targeted users of the FB check-in tool specifically," the Sacred Stone Camp said. "We support the check-in tactic, and think it is a great way to express solidarity."

Facebook and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe did not immediately return BuzzFeed News' request for comment.

A 26-year-old woman from England, who did not wish to be named, told BuzzFeed News that she answered the call to check in on Facebook because "lots of people have been feeling quietly angry for a while – and now we’ve been offered a simple task we can do on smartphones, that makes us feel useful."

The woman said that many young people in the UK who were following the pipeline controversy felt "strongly that the destruction of the habitat and the disregard for people’s homes and beliefs is wrong," but were "powerless to do much about it" until now.

"There’s also something inherently creepy about the police force or security services using social media to clamp down on protests," she said. "It’s not a surprise that people want to subvert that kind of monitoring."

Donna Brazile Out At CNN As New Email Suggests She Sent Clinton Team Debate Question

Aaron P. Bernstein / Getty Images

Donna Brazile, the acting chair of the Democratic National Committee, apparently sent Hillary Clinton's campaign a question in advance of a debate in Flint, Michigan in March, according to hacked emails release by Wikileaks on Monday.

Not long after the revelation, Brazile tweeted, "Thank you @CNN. Honored to be a Democratic Strategist and commentator on the network. Godspeed to all my former colleagues."

Brazile was a political analyst for CNN at the time, and was placed on leave after she became acting chair of the DNC. On Monday, The Huffington Post reported that CNN said it accepted Brazile's resignation on Oct. 14 and that it was "completely uncomfortable" with the interactions.

Earlier this month, in another hacked email, Brazile appeared to send the Clinton campaign a town hall debate question during the primaries. Brazile denied sending a debate question in advance.

Wikileaks has been releasing emails from the account of John Podesta, the Clinton campaign chairman. The US government, in a statement, has blamed Russia for a series of hacks on Democratic Party officials, stating, “the recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts.”

George Soros And Voting Machine Company Deny Alt-Right Conspiracy

A Smartmatic voting machine being tested in Venezuela in 2004.

Reuters Photographer / Reuters

A major voting machine company on Friday struck back at a conspiracy theory circulating among the alt-right, denying it had any ties to Democratic donor George Soros or that it will be providing equipment for the upcoming US presidential election.

After the conspiracy theory was first fanned on Reddit, multiple right-wing websites have warned voters to be wary of using Smartmatic voting machines, alleging it is linked to Soros, a major Clinton donor.

"Demand a paper ballot," urged the website The Truth Division. "Many states require poll workers to give you one if you request it — so do that if you see a 'Smartmatic' machine."

More than 100,000 people have also signed a petition on the White House website calling on Congress to hold an emergency session to remove the machines from a number of states.

But both Smartmatic and Soros say the story is completely untrue.

George Soros.

Luke Macgregor / Reuters

In a letter to "customers, partners, and friends" on Friday, Smartmatic CEO Antonio Mugica and chairman Lord Mark Malloch-Brown said their company "does not own, nor will it operate any voting equipment" in the upcoming US election.

"More than a decade ago, we designed, manufactured and sold highly secure, US-certified electronic voting technology to the US market," the pair wrote. "Although some of this technology is still in use for the upcoming US elections, Smartmatic is not offering support services to any county."

Although Malloch-Brown does have ties to charities funded by Soros and was previously the chairman of the billionaire's Quantum Fund, the Smartmatic leaders said Soros "has zero ownership or
involvement in our company."

"Smartmatic has no ties to political parties or groups in any country and we abide by a strict code of ethics that forbids the company from donating to any political campaigns of any kind," they wrote.

The Smartmatic memo was forwarded to BuzzFeed News and other outlets by Michael Vachon, a Soros spokesman, who called the theory "crazy."

Vachon declined to comment further, writing in an email, "I am just sending along the note from Smartmatic. George doesn't really have anything to say on his nuttiness."

Iowa Woman Arrested For Allegedly Voting For Trump Twice Because Polls Are “Rigged”

Des Moines Register Data Central / Via data.desmoinesregister.com

An Iowa woman arrested on suspicion of voting twice said she cast two ballots for Donald Trump because "the polls are rigged."

Des Moines resident Terri Rote, 55, allegedly cast two votes in the general election: Once on Oct. 4 at the Polk County Election Office, and again on Oct. 21 at a county satellite voting site, a Des Moines Police Department spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.

"The Elections Office staff reported the duplication to us on 24 Oct.," the spokesperson wrote in an email.

Rote was booked at Polk County Jail on Thursday on a first-degree election misconduct charge, the spokesperson added.

On Friday, she was released on a $5,000 bond. She could face up to five years in prison if she is convicted, the Des Moines Register reported.

On Saturday, Rote told Iowa Public Radio that her plan to vote twice was not premeditated, but she became worried her first vote for Trump would be changed to one for Hillary Clinton.

“I wasn’t planning on doing it twice, it was spur of the moment” Rote said. “The polls are rigged.”

Trump and several of his supporters have espoused similar sentiments over the past few months, even calling on people to monitor polling places for electoral fraud.

On Feb. 1, Rote was seen supporting Trump ahead of the Iowa caucus.

Polk County Attorney John Sarcone told Iowa Public Radio, "I think in the 25-plus years that I've been doing this job, this maybe the third [time] we've had some irregularity that's resulted in a criminal charge.”

How The Leaders Of An Anti-Government Movement Took On The Feds And Won

Rick Bowmer / AP

Attorney Matthew Schindler has handled more than 200 cases in federal court, squaring against federal prosecutors and arguing his case to judges and juries.

Never had any of his clients been indicted and stood trial within a year — the wheels of justice just don't turn that quickly. Yet there stood Schindler in a Portland courtroom Thursday, waiting for a jury to render a verdict just 10 months after his client had been arrested.

Kenneth Medenbach

AP

His client, Kenneth Medenbach, was one of seven occupiers charged with a takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge, a tense standoff that caught national attention and drew a spotlight to a growing anti-government movement and the dispute over Western lands and ranchers' claims to it.

Ammon and Ryan Bundy, the leaders of the armed occupation, were also waiting to hear their fate. Most observers, including Schindler, expected a conviction.

Then, in an astonishing decision, a jury found all seven not guilty.

"This is the biggest defeat of this US Attorney's office that I'm aware of," Schindler told BuzzFeed News. "These are just not the kinds of cases that you win."

Looking back at the case, Schindler said, he sees a federal criminal case that was hurried through the courts and riddled with tactical mistakes made by prosecutors. Making matters worse, the Department of Justice may have "overcharged" the defendants with a felony for conspiracy to impede federal officers by threats or fear.

After a six-week trial, Schindler said, prosecutors were unable to show basic factors needed to prove the conspiracy charge, including intent. Despite stressing the image of heavily armed men heading to the refuge and standing guard, prosecutors didn't offer specific examples of threats against the employees of the refuge, a key aspect to the criminal charge, Schindler said.

"I sat through a six-week trial and I never heard a threat discussed," he said.

That seems to correlate with what one of the jurors told The Oregonian in an email, revealing the 12 jurors felt prosecutors did not prove basic elements of the charge.

Don Ryan / AP

"It should be known that all 12 jurors felt that this verdict was a statement regarding various failures of the prosecution to prove 'conspiracy' in the count itself," Juror 4, who was not identified, told the paper.

The case gave an unexpected victory to a growing militia and anti-federal government movement that experts say has expanded after Ammon and Ryan Bundy's father, Cliven Bundy, first squared-off against federal agents at his Nevada Ranch.

In 2014, militias and armed supporters flocked to the ranch and forced federal agents to withdraw, a move that supporters quickly pointed to as a victory. Experts said the decision emboldened similar groups and inspired the occupation in Oregon nearly two years later. Cliven Bundy and his two sons are still facing federal charges in Nevada for that case.

Looking to increase their numbers at the refuge and increase public support, the Bundys and their followers documented the Oregon occupation extensively on social media. The videos and social media posts, some of which showed the men stating their willingness to defend themselves with force if officials tried to remove them from the land, were heavily used by prosecutors, hoping to show planning and coordination for the tense standoff.

It seemed to be an open and shut case.

For defense attorneys, however, instead of arguing basic points of the occupation, they admitted the refuge was occupied and countered that the federal government had no claim over the refuge land. The purpose of the armed takeover, they argued, was to draw attention to the plight of local ranchers.

"Rather than trying to pretend that they weren't really doing what they were doing, we took their actual argument and said, 'It's legitimate,'" J. Morgan Philpot, one of the attorneys representing Ammon Bundy told BuzzFeed News.

Doing so was initially a challenge to defense attorneys, Philpot said.

"Their initial filings to our arguments were so dismissive they were insulting," Philpot said. "Then you could see in their closing arguments they tried to come back and attack it."

The strategy appears to have worked.

"We were not asked to judge on bullets and hurt feelings, rather to decide if any agreement was made with an illegal object in mind," Juror 4 told The Oregonian. "It seemed this basic, high standard of proof was lost upon the prosecution throughout."

Don Ryan / AP

Schindler agreed, and looking back on the trial, he said, it appeared to him as if basic elements of the case were not addressed, or ignored by prosecutors.

The FBI agent in charge of the investigation, for example, was never brought forward by prosecutors to testify, leaving gaps into how the case was investigated.

When agents testified about finding weapons at the refuge, for example, Schindler said none of them could answer basic questions as to how the evidence was processed.

Though prosecutors tried to stress the large number of weapons seized at the refuge, prosecutors did not present traces performed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on the weapons — 33 of which Schindler said did not link back to any of the occupiers at the refuge.

Investigators could still find a way to link the weapons back to the defendants, he said, but they did not do so in the case.

"I think they came across to the jury as arrogant. They thought the case was open and shut and they didn't' have to do much," Schindler said. "They just failed."

Defendant Neil Wampler.

Don Ryan / AP

Prosecutors also appeared to have overreached in the charges filed, he said. His client, for example, arrived late at the occupation and was arrested while driving a truck reported stolen by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Despite this, Medenbach was charged with conspiracy.

He was offered a plea deal where he would be released immediately with a "time served" sentence if he pleaded guilty. Medenbach refused.

"He said, no," Schindler said. "He said to me, 'The entire point for me doing this is getting attention for this issues.'"

In his experience, Schindler said, most federal cases are thoroughly vetted before an indictment is even filed, reducing the chances of winning an acquittal in federal court.

Instead, he said, the case against the Bundy brothers and five other defendants appeared to be hurried through.

"When all you do is shoot fish in a barrel you come to think you're a great fisherman, and you're not."

With less than two weeks before the presidential election, the top official at the FBI notified lawmakers Friday that his agency was investigating a new cache of emails connected to Hillary Clinton because he felt an "obligation to do so" and wanted to avoid "misleading" the American people.

The emails were uncovered after investigators took possession of devices used by Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her now-estranged husband and former congressman Anthony Weiner. FBI Director James Comey then sent a letter to members of Congress notifying lawmakers that the agency was looking into the newly discovered emails.

Friday evening, the Washington Post and Fox News both obtained an internal FBI memo that further sheds light on why Comey chose to reveal the new email inquiry in the final days of a hotly contested presidential election. In the memo, Comey says he felt "an obligation" to tell Congress about the investigation into the emails because he "testified repeatedly in recent months that our investigation was completed."

"It would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record," the FBI director said.

"In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood, but I wanted you to hear directly from me about it," Comey wrote.

Nevertheless, Comey's decision was fiercely debated Friday and Clinton — seemingly perturbed by not being notified in advance about the investigation — called on the FBI to produce more information.

“We don’t know the facts,” she said at a Friday evening news conference, “which is why we are calling on the FBI to release all the information that it has.”

Read the fell text of Comey's memo here:

To all:

This morning I sent a letter to Congress in connection with the Secretary Clinton email investigation. Yesterday, the investigative team briefed me on their recommendation with respect to seeking access to emails that have recently been found in an unrelated case. Because those emails appear to be pertinent to our investigation, I agreed that we should take appropriate steps to obtain and review them.

Of course, we don’t ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel an obligation to do so given that I testified repeatedly in recent months that our investigation was completed. I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record. At the same time, however, given that we don’t know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails, I don’t want to create a misleading impression. In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood, but I wanted you to hear directly from me about it.

Trump Supporters Are "Thrilled" With The FBI's New Clinton-Related Email Investigation

Valerie Griffeth with brother Matt Griffeth

Emma Loop/BuzzFeed News

Donald Trump supporters at a rally in Maine on Friday said they were "thrilled" and relieved to learn that the FBI is again looking into emails related to Hillary Clinton.

"That's amazing," said Valerie Griffeth, a young Trump supporter attending his rally. "I'm so glad that they did."

"I feel like she's just a really dishonest person and she needs to be caught because it's immoral and it's wrong," Griffeth said of Clinton's use of a private email server while she served as secretary of state.

Carl Witham and Joel Ellis

"I'm thrilled," said Joel Ellis, a veteran who served in Vietnam and in the reserves. "I think that the FBI and the Department of Justice stonewalled us on the last go-round. I don't care if she's guilty or not, but I'd like to find out."

In July, the FBI recommended no criminal charges of Clinton in regard to her email use, but Director James Comey did say she and her team were "extremely careless" with handling classified information.

On Friday, the FBI said it was again investigating emails related to Clinton, but many questions were left unanswered. Officials said that the emails were not on her private server.

Trump has potently attacked Clinton over the email scandal, and when he mentioned the new investigation at an earlier rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, the crowd erupted in cheers. “This was a grave miscarriage of justice," he said.

Ellis' friend, Carl Witham — who said he is a 35-year veteran of the US Air Force and National Guard — said he feels Clinton is guilty and that the FBI hasn't done enough to make a case against her.

"I think it was stopped by higher up," he said of the initial investigation.

In Maine, many Trump supporters waiting for the Republican nominee to deliver a speech in the gym of a Christian academy expressed doubt in the FBI's ability to conduct the investigation.

Doug Foss and Rich Carlson

Emma Loop

"I think they need to change the FBI, who's head of the FBI, before they start doing anymore investigating," said Doug Foss, a Trump supporter from nearby Lewiston. "He couldn't do it right the first time."

Foss said he thought it was "kind of funny" when the FBI didn't lay charges the first time around. "Rigged, as Donald Trump would say," Foss said, chuckling.

Rich Carlson, who attended the rally with Foss, said he feels that Clinton has received special treatment from the FBI.

"When they did the investigation the first time, they found plenty of evidence to proceed and they didn't," he said. "So I don't know how hopeful I am that they're going to anything the second time around."

Lynda Arsenault, a Trump supporter from Lisbon, said she was "disappointed" and "surprised" when the FBI said it wasn't pressing charges in early July. But on Friday, she first-pumped when she heard the news that the FBI was re-opening the case.

"Very good. I think it's about time," Arsenault said. "She's corrupt. She needs to not be our president."

A Professor Circled “Hence” On A Latina Student’s Paper And Wrote “This Is Not Your Word"

A Latina student at a university in Boston said that her professor on Thursday handed back her paper and told her, in front of the class, “This is not your language.”

After looking at more of the comments the professor left on her literature review, Suffolk University sociology major Tiffany Martínez noticed that the professor had circled the word “hence” and had written, “This is not your word,” underlining “not” twice.

And at the top of her paper, the professor had written, “Please go back & indicate where you cut & paste.”

Provided by Tiffany Martínez

Martínez, an aspiring professor who was born and raised in the Bronx, told BuzzFeed News that her professor had called her to the front of the senior seminar course on Thursday to receive her graded paper when she made the language comment.

“She spoke loudly enough that students at the back of the room heard and asked if I was OK after class,” Martínez said.

She felt terrified after the incident.

“I spent the rest of the class going back through every single line, every single citation to make sure that nothing had been plagiarized, even though I knew I hadn’t,” she said.

Later that day in a blog post entitled “Academia, Love Me Back,” Martínez wrote about her experiences as both a first-generation college student and US citizen at what she calls “an institution extremely populated with high-income white counterparts.”

“My last name and appearance immediately instills a set of biases before I have the chance to open my mouth,” she wrote.

“As a minority in my classrooms, I continuously hear my peers and professors use language that both covertly and overtly oppresses the communities I belong to. Therefore, I do not always feel safe when I attempt to advocate for my people in these spaces,” she added.

Martinez also described how the incident made her doubt her capabilities as a scholar.

In this interaction, my undergraduate career was both challenged and critiqued. It is worth repeating how my professor assumed I could not use the word “hence,” a simple transitory word that connected two relating statements. The professor assumed I could not produce quality research. The professor read a few pages that reflected my comprehension of complex sociological theories and terms and invalidated it all. Their blue pen was the catalyst that opened an ocean of self-doubt that I worked so hard to destroy. In front of my peers, I was criticized by a person who had the academic position I aimed to acquire. I am hurting because my professor assumed that the only way I could produce content as good as this was to “cut and paste.” I am hurting because for a brief moment I believed them.

Martínez said her blog posts usually average 15 views and three shares among her close friends. The one she wrote yesterday has been viewed and shared thousands of times on social media, and has garnered hundreds of comments from other people of color who have experienced similar treatment at school.

“It’s surreal how overwhelmingly supportive the academic community has been, but they’re also telling me, ‘This isn’t going to end now,’” Martínez said.

She has not spoken with the professor since the incident, but has brought it to the attention of the chair of Suffolk University’s sociology department, who has launched an investigation.

“The head of the department is very familiar with my work and my writing,” Martínez said. “He looked over my paper and had nothing but good things to say.”

BuzzFeed News has reached out to the Suffolk University sociology department for comment.

As Trump Struggles In Polls, Supporters Pray For His Victory

“I think the Lord’s watching over us,” one supporter told BuzzFeed News. “That’s why we’re going to win.”

Jay Laprete / AFP / Getty Images

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Donald Trump stood behind in national polls on Thursday, but supporters in this small Ohio city were certain their candidate could pull off a victory -- they were praying for him.

Many of the candidate's supporters who turned out for a campaign rally at the Clark County Fairgrounds said they supported Trump because they believed he would stand up for their Christian values. Some had been enthusiastic about Trump from the beginning. Others figured he was their best chance against Hillary Clinton.

“Democrats seem to be so anti-Christian,” said George Myers, 67. Myers said he was disappointed in Trump and Clinton as the major party choices, but he would be voting Republican.

“It's not right,” he said. “Our country is founded on Christian principles.”

To take the lead, Carol Elliott, 56, said Trump should just keep doing what he's been doing -- talking to Americans at events like Thursday’s rally.

“I think he touches the heart of the American people, and he really cares,” she said.

Recent accusations from women who said Trump made inappropriate sexual advances didn't phase her; it was just gossip, she said.

“Who cares about 20 years ago?” She said. “His character, today's character, should explain it all.”

She and her husband agreed that the country needed a Trump win.

“[We're] saying a lot of prayers,” Rick Elliott said. “Otherwise we're going to be in a lot of trouble.”

To Kevan Strohmeier, 62, a Clinton victory would mean dire consequences.

“There's going to be a bad war,” she said. “She ain't gonna win, so we don't have to worry about that.”

Strohmeier was seeing Trump for the third time on Thursday, and she said she remained impressed with him.

“I think the Lord’s watching over us,” she said. “That's why we're going to win.”

Claudia Koerner / BuzzFeed News

After the rally, fliers placed on car windows advertised two “patriotic services” for the Sunday before the election at a local Baptist church. As several thousand people headed to their cars, Diana Alexander, 46, said she felt energized and excited about the election. She described herself as an enthusiastic fan, adding others supported Trump more quietly -- which would come out in the form of a Trump win on Election Day.

She picked up a stack of voter guides showing Trump’s positions on topics from “late term abortion on demand” to “allowing churches political free speech” to share with the members of her church. While Trump might not be a saint in his personal life, she said she believed he would stand up for Christian values if president.

Leaders Of Armed Oregon Standoff Acquitted Of Conspiracy Charges

Don Ryan / AP

The leaders of an armed occupation at an Oregon wildlife refuge were found not guilty of conspiracy charges Thursday, dealing a blow to federal officials seeking to prosecute leaders of a growing militia movement credited with emboldening an anti-government movement.

Ammon and Ryan Bundy were both charged with conspiracy to impede officers from doing their job and accused of encouraging militia members to flock to Harney County, Oregon, in January, prompting a tense standoff with law enforcement and militia members in the rural community.

The two brothers were among the first seven defendants to face trial in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge standoff trial, along with other leaders and prominent faces of the standoff that kept the community on edge.

A total of 26 people who took part in the occupation were charged in federal court. Eleven defendants have agreed to plea deals with prosecutors, while seven others are expected to go to trial in February.

Ammon and Ryan Bundy are both sons of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who also sparked a standoff with federal authorities in 2014 over unpaid grazing fees. Cliven Bundy is also facing federal charges in Nevada.

The jury also cleared five other defendants who were tried along with the Bundy siblings.

Rick Bowmer / AP

Another seven defendants involved in the occupation are scheduled to be tried in federal court in February.

Prosecutors argued that the leaders of the group planned to take over the federal land and keep federal employees from going to work there. The occupation, they argued, was not an impromptu act as it was depicted on the first day, but planned by the leaders to prompt a confrontation with federal officials.

"These defendants took over a wildlife refuge and it wasn't theirs," Ethan Knight, assistant U.S. Attorney, argued in his closing arguments, according to Oregon Public Radio. "The people of Burns did not ask for this."

The defendants argued the occupation was not planned, and that despite their actions their intention was not to prevent employees from going to work.

Ammon Bundy's attorney, Marcus Mumford, argued during closing arguments that Bundy was a victim of federal government overreach, and criticized the FBI's use of confidential informants.

"We're counting on you to stop government overreach," Mumford said, according ot OPB. "Our trust is in you."

Leaders of the occupation have said the armed occupation was a peaceful protest against the jailing of local ranchers who were convicted of lighting illegal fires in federal land. As the occupation continued, however, the grievances from those at the refuge were more about federal government overreach and ownership of lands than the jailing of the ranchers.

Those who who were tried in this case included:

Ammon and Ryan Bundy

Ammon and Ryan Bundy, were both charged with conspiracy to impede federal workers from doing their job, possession of firearms in a federal facility and theft of government property.

Their father is Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher who led a standoff against the government in his ranch in 2014. Federal agents had seized Cliven Bundy's cattle over a dispute of unpaid grazing fees that had accumulated to more than a million dollars over the years.

As militia members flocked to the Bundy ranch and initiated an armed standoff with federal agents, government officials there backed down and withdrew - a move that was seen as a victory for militia and anti-government groups who had flocked to the ranch to assist their families.

Several experts credit the government's actions, and the interpretation of a victory by militia groups, for emboldening and inspiring the takeover of the refuge in Oregon.

Cox, a friend of the Bundy family, was among the first occupiers of the refuge.

She was also with the Bundy family during the standoff with federal agents in Nevada in 2014.

Cox helped leaders draft a set of demands to local and federal authorities during the first days of the standoff, including demands that federal lands in Oregon be turned over to local ranchers and miners.

David Fry

A 28-year-old from Ohio, David Fry is not believed to have played a leading role in the standoff, but he was among the last occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to leave, broadcasting the last moments of a tense standoff with federal agents live on YouTube.

Fry repeatedly threatened in his videos that he and the last holdouts would end the standoff in bloodshed only. He eventually walked out of the refuge holding a gun to his head, but surrendered himself to officials.

Neil Wampler

Wampler drove from his home in California to join the occupation in Burns, Oregon.

Though he arrived early during the occupation, several at the refuge at first refused to acknowledge his presence there.

Wampler, who is 68, had been convicted at the age of 29 of killing his father in Lake County, California.

Talking to reporters, he said he was working at the refuge as a cook.

Kenneth Medenbach

Kenneth Medenbach

Medenbach was one of the first to be arrested during the occupation, picked up by authorities at the parking lot of a convenience store driving a federal truck taken from the refuge.

Medenbach had been tasked with getting supplies in the nearby town of Burns for the occupiers, and authorities arrested him when he drove to a store with the stolen truck.

He has represented himself in court and, in court filings, has shown strong leanings toward the sovereign citizen movement, which challenges the validity of federal courts and officials and believes the federal government invalid.

In one court filing, Medenbach challenged the oath of office taken by the judge presiding over the case and demanded he and the other defendants be released and paid $50,000 for lost wages and $100,000 each for punitive damages against the government.

The motion was denied.

Jeff Banta

Jeff Banta was among the last four holdouts at the refuge, along with co-defendant David Fry.

However, his court-appointed attorney has argued he was not a leader or a decision maker during the occupation.

A carpenter from Nevada, Banta arrived at the refuge on Jan. 25, a day before agents arrested Ammn and Ryan Bundy, as well as other leaders of the occupation.
