A Lake County police officer was shot and killed Tuesday morning by three men during a routine traffic stop in Fox Lake, Illinois, Det. Chris Covelli told CNN.
ABC7
Officials in the local sheriff's office and police department told local news outlets that the officer was pronounced dead on the scene in Lake County, a suburb just outside of Chicago.
The officer pulled over the three suspects – two white men and one black man – for suspicious activity, police said in a press conference. They were hostile and ran, police said the officers reported over his radio as he pursued them on foot.
The suspects managed to take the officer's gun and pepper spray, shot and wounded the officer, and fled, an official said. He was found dead, Corvelli told CNN, when a police rescue van came to check on him.
A manhunt involving dogs and helicopters has been ongoing since early Tuesday morning. FBI, US Marshals, and SWAT teams were seen in the area throughout the morning. Fox Lake citizens have been warned that the men are armed and dangerous, and the local public schools are on temporary lockdown.
Police said the officer, who has not yet been named, is a father and is close to retirement. Sources told CNN that he was a 32-year veteran of the force.
