U.S. Special Forces involved in counter-terrorism operations came under two separate attacks in Southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, according to NBC News.

It is still unknown how many were soldiers wounded or killed in the attacks.

The forces were involved in counter-terrorism operations in the Helmand Province when they came under attack, U.S. officials told NBC News.

Officials said a U.S. medevac helicopter came under mortar and small-arms fire as it attempted to recover casualties from the attack.

A U.S. military spokesperson told Reuters the chopper experienced mechanical malfunctions, but landed safely in Marjah in Helmand Province.

The Department of Defense did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News' request for comment.
