Ammon Bundy is leading the group who seized the headquarters of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge on Saturday in support of two local ranchers from rural Oregon.
The anti-government activists who took over a wildlife refuge in rural Oregon are expected to hold a press conference on Monday. Watch the conference here.
Ammon Bundy, the leader of the group, said on Monday that he wants his protest to remain peaceful.
"I have no plans or desire to die," Bundy wrote on Twitter. "We are peaceful people."
The anti-government activists say they are occupying the Malheur Wildlife Refuge — a small birdwatching enclave about 50 miles from Burns, Oregon — to protest the 5-year prison terms given to Dwight and Steve Hammond, two ranchers convicted of burning nearly 140 acres of federal land.
In a statement, an attorney for the Hammonds distanced the family from the Bundys, saying none of them speak for the family.
The leader of the occupation is the son of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher who became notorious in 2014, when he led a group of armed ranchers in a days-long confrontation against federal law-enforcement agents. The agents had tried to seize some 500 heads of cattle to cover Bundy's unpaid fines for his alleged abuse of federal land.
The FBI is leading the response to the occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge. In a statement on Twitter, a spokesperson for the bureau said the agency would not be releasing any information about "the specifics of the law enforcement response" because of safety concerns.
