Katy Perry Expected To Win Right To Buy Catholic Convent, Her Attorney Says

Katy Perry's path to buying a Catholic convent over the objections of an order of nuns appears to be clear.

The "Roar" singer's attorney, Eric Rowen, told BuzzFeed News that the judge in the case had indicated Wednesday morning that she would side with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles, which had argued in court that it had the right to pick Perry as the buyer, despite the nuns' wishes.

"Subject to our receiving the written order, we are very pleased with the judge’s description of her ruling this morning, which indicates that we won the real property issues, clearing the way for our client to buy the property at issue," Rowen told BuzzFeed News.

The written order was expected to be issued later in the day.

Perry was pulled into a legal battle over the property last year, when the nuns of the Institute for the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary tried to sell the aging 8-acre property to local business woman/restaurateur Dana Hollister for $15.5 million.

The two remaining nuns of the sisterhood — who are now living in retirement homes — had maintained their right to sell, pointing to the fact that the property was bequeathed to them more than 40 years ago by a devout parishioner.

The archdiocese, however, maintained that only the Church had the right to sell the 1927 estate, which is nestled in the Los Feliz neighborhood near Hollywood. The archbishop also argued that Hollister lacked the financial resources to go through with the purchase, and instead wanted to sell to Perry for $14.5 million.

Throughout the legal wrangling, residents have mostly taken Perry's side, saying they fear Hollister — who has a track record of redeveloping properties — will do just that and degrade the neighborhood's charm.

Hollister, for her part, had insisted she was undecided on her plans for the convent.
