A San Diego police officer has died and another was left fighting for his life after being shot during a traffic stop shortly after 11 p.m. PT Thursday.
Following a manhunt across the Southcrest area of the city, the San Diego Police Department detained one individual shortly after 12 a.m. PT. They are still searching the area for other potential suspects, and have urged residents to remain indoors.
The slain officer was shot multiple times in the chest, while the second officer was injured and is in surgery.
The officers, who have not been named, are part of the SDPD's gang suppression department, but were conducting a traffic stop when the incident occurred. Shortly after stopping the car, they called for emergency cover, Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said in a news conference.
Chief Zimmerman called the officers "heroic", and said they were "out there day and night, putting their lives on the line to protect good people of San Diego".
Zimmerman said telling the slain officer's wife was "extremely difficult," ABC News reported. The officer had two children.
Fellow officers gathered outside the Scripps Mercy Hospital, where the slain officer was treated. The injured officer's wife is with him in another hospital.
