Five People Shot Near Black Lives Matter Protest In Minneapolis

Five people were shot Monday night near an ongoing Black Lives Matter protest outside a police station in north Minneapolis, officials said.

The shootings occurred about a block away from the precinct, Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder told BuzzFeed News. All five people suffered non-life threatening injuries, the Associated Press reported.

Deputy police chief Medaria Arradondo said three gunshot victims were transported to North Memorial Medical Center, the Star Tribune reported. There was no immediate word on who was responsible for the shooting.

A protester, Oluchi Omeoga, told AP she witnessed three people at the protest wearing masks who "weren't supposed to be there." The trio left the crowd and walked down a street, while several protesters followed the group.

At the corner of a street, the three people pulled out guns and shots rang out, Omeoga said.

The incident comes after protests erupted in Minneapolis following the fatal police shooting of 24-year-old Jamar Clark, an unarmed black man, on Nov. 15.

Authorities have said Clark was shot during a struggle while they were trying to protect an assault victim.

Protesters have said Clark was handcuffed when he was shot and have called for videos related to his death to be released.

The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into whether Clark's civil rights were violated.
