According to a statement from park officials, the man in his early 20s, who has not been formally identified, was walking some 225 yards off the boardwalk when he fell into the boiling waters of the Norris Geyser Basin.

"At this time, rangers are treating this incident as a probable fatality because the victim has not been located," park officials said, adding that staff were using "extreme caution as they respond given the hazards of the thermal area."
