Chris Brown's Criminal Past Could Make A New Assault Case Even Worse

Chris Brown, right, appeared with his attorney Mark Geragos, at a court hearing in the R&B singer's long-running case over his 2009 attack on Rihanna in March 2015.

Chris Brown was released from jail late Tuesday night after forking over a hefty $250,000 in bail, but his legal battle has just begun.

His exorbitant bail — five times the typical bail for an arrest related to assault with a deadly weapon — and the fact that an entire mobile unit and dozens of officers, plus a criminologist, were dispatched to search Brown’s house and take witness statements, are clear indications the Los Angeles Police Department is vigorously pursuing a criminal case.

As a search warrant was obtained to search his home, Brown took to social media to deny any crime took place and criticize police.

Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos, told BuzzFeed News he understood the reason his client took to social media to vent.

"I understand the (Brown's) frustration," Geragos said. " Someone who has had repeated attempts of people either burglarizing, trespassing, or stalking him and there has been very little if any response. And now you have someone who makes a complaint, which he believes to be categorically false, and the response seemed to be grossly disproportionate and that is where is frustration comes from and I think that is understandable."

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is still waiting for the police to deliver their findings and recommendations on the case before making the ultimate decision on whether to file charges, Brown's criminal past alone could expose him to additional penalties.

Brown was convicted of felony assault on Rihanna in 2009 and was sentenced to five years probation. His probation stretched three more years due to his failing to complete required community service, which he eventually did in 2015.

Criminal Defense Attorney Troy Slaten told BuzzFeed News that due to the alleged assault on Tuesday against model Baylee Curran, Brown could face the possibility of not only being charged with assault with a deadly weapon, which commands a maximum penalty of four years in state prison, but an additional 10 years in prison for the enhanced crime of allegedly using a firearm.

And since California does not allow convicted felons to be in possession of a firearm, except under extenuating circumstance, Brown could also face an additional four years in state prison for that charge alone.

Slaten said there are few exceptions for a felon possessing a firearm, but they usually entail situations in which "someone pulls a firearm on you and you take it away from them, or if you take a firearm away from someone and bring it to the police…but those facts don’t apply in this case because he reportedly held a gun and pointed it at someone’s face, if we believe this woman."

Police declined to provide details about what allegedly happened, but Curran told TMZ that Brown pulled a gun on her after she touched a piece of jewelry that was up for sale.

Despite the reports that Brown was drug tested upon booking, Slaten said he does not expect any charges to come out of that. While being under the influence of an illegal drug is a crime, even in one’s own house, the reported blood test was taken nearly 17 hours after police first arrived at his house.

"Unlikely to be any active drugs in his system,” Slaten said. "That is the least of his concerns."

Donald Trump To Give Highly Anticipated Immigration Speech In Arizona

Evan Vucci / AP

Donald Trump is slated to outline his plans for immigration reform at a rally in Phoenix, just hours after meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto south of the border.

The speech, which scheduled for 6 p.m. local time, has been a highly anticipated after the Republican nominee indicated he might be open to "softening" his stance on immigration controls. He then later said he had not changed his mind on the strict proposals he promoted during his campaign.

Trump has said he wants to build a force to deport the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US. And a hallmark of his campaign has been his proposal to build a wall along the border and force Mexico to pay for it.

After meeting with Peña Nieto on Wednesday, Trump said the two discussed the wall, but not the issue of who would pay for it.

"We didn't discuss that," Trump told reporters.

However, Peña Nieto tweeted that the issue was indeed discussed at the beginning of the hour-long meeting, and that he told Trump Mexico would not pay for it.

Trump's campaign then issued a statement saying the two men "hold two different views on this issue."

Campus Rape Victim Tells Her Assailant "I Thought I Was Going To Die"

A former University of Minnesota student was sentenced to more than six years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to raping two women during college parties on back-to-back weekends in 2014.

Daniel Drill-Mellum pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct stemming for two sexual assaults — one which occurred in 2014 on Halloween in his fraternity’s laundry room and one which occurred a week later at his apartment.

“It’s a relief I can walk the world a bit more freely now,” Drill-Mellum’s second victim — who agreed to be identified by her first name, Abby — told BuzzFeed News Wednesday. “It’s going to be a huge relief to be a person a again.”

In her impact statement, which she read in court, Abby detailed the night of the assault. She said her only plan that night was to go to a football tailgate party. During the event, she said Drill-Mellum asked for her help getting more alcohol from his apartment.

“I remember realizing once I walked into his apartment that there was no one else there, and the terror that quickly set in when I realized what he was about to do,” she said in her impact statement. “I begged to go back to my friends. He didn’t listen. I squirmed away and tried to roll over, but he kept pulling my body back. Eventually, he allowed me to flip onto my stomach as he raped me. I remember thinking ‘just close your eyes and you can get out of here soon.’”

Abby said he violently raped and choked her, shoving his arm down her throat.

“I thought I was going to die,” she said in her statement. “I kind of hoped I was going to die.”

“I started truly physically struggling to get away,” she said in the statement. “Each time he grabbed me back down onto his bed, and said 'no' when I begged him to go back to my friends. Then he announced that he was going to rape me a second time. He called it 'sex,' but I knew that wasn’t what this was.”

Abby said she suffered physical wounds serious enough that a nurse gasped when she went to the hospital.

Abby told BuzzFeed News she wrote the impact statement a few weeks ago and felt confident standing up in court to read it, adding, “there was a lot of stuff that was left unsaid that I needed to say.”

“When it came time, though, I absolutely broke down,” she told BuzzFeed News. “I’m surprised I even got through. I could feel him looking at me while he was sitting behind me.”

Drill-Mellum will be eligible for release after two-thirds of his 74-month sentence and will be a lifetime registered sex offender.

His attorney, Debbie Lang, told the courtroom that Drill-Mellum has entered an inpatient sex offender treatment last May, according to the Star Tribune.

"From there he flourished," Lang said. "My client accepts responsibility."

Lang did not immediately return request for comment from BuzzFeed News.

"I am deeply sorry," Drill-Mellum reportedly said in court. "No one should have to endure the trauma and harm I have caused you … I have only begun to understand the impact I have had on you."

Abby told BuzzFeed News she’s happy Drill-Mellum received some prison time but said the sentence still feels like “a slap on the wrist.”

“I wish we lived in a country where the sentence could be longer,” she said. “For what he did to me, nothing would feel long enough.”

She also said she does not believe Drill-Mellum regrets his behavior.

“I have no other words for him,” she said in her impact statement. “He knows what his actions were, and I have never seen any remorseful or apologetic behavior from him.”

Abby said the last two years have been devastating. She is now a senior at the University of Minnesota, but had to take some time off after the rape.

“Going back to campus was difficult,” she said. “But I had to go back. I had to finish school. Money-wise it’s the only school I can afford. There wasn’t really any other option for me.”

On Wednesday, Abby came forward on Facebook in a lengthy post she said is difficult to share publicly. [The post, reviewed by BuzzFeed News, is only visible to her Facebook friends.]

“I’m tired of having to stay quiet about what happened to me,” she wrote on Facebook. “I am not the one who needs to be ashamed.”

The other victim, who has not been identified, also read her impact statement in court and said Drill-Mellum “did not impact my life.” Rather, she said, “he completely uprooted and altered it. In one night I felt like my life wasn’t mine anymore.”

“I am going to watch him walk out of this courtroom in handcuffs today and count it as a victory for all the daughters at the University of Minnesota,” she said in her statement. “A victory for women and daughters everywhere. I am proud that I had a part in putting him behind bars.”

Campaign Launched To Support Judge In Stanford Sex Assault Case

Jason Doiy / AP

A political campaign has launched to support Judge Aaron Persky, whose decision to sentence former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman sparked protests and a recall effort.

Persky recently asked to be transferred from criminal cases to a position in civil court. The move was welcomed by his critics, but organizers seeking a recall said they continue to believe Persky is biased and should be removed from the bench.

By Wednesday, a campaign had launched in support of Persky and his position. Retain Judge Persky has registered with California election officials, and Palo Alto Online reported that the judge had posted a list of attorneys who had donated in his courtroom to comply with the state judicial ethics code.

In a statement on the Retain Judge Persky website, the judge offered some of his first comments on the Turner controversy.

"I believe strongly in judicial independence," Persky said. "I took an oath to uphold the Constitution, not to appease politicians or ideologues. When your own rights and property are at stake, you want the judge to make a fair and lawful decision, free from political influence."

A plane flies over Stanford University with a banner reading "Protect Survivors. Not Rapists. #PerskyMustGo" during the commencement ceremony at Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California, on June 12.

Persky and campaign organizers did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BuzzFeed News.

The sentencing of Turner drew national attention in June after BuzzFeed News published a powerful letter written by the victim on how the crime had affected her. Though sentencing guidelines recommend a minimum sentence of two years for the crime, Persky ordered Turner to six months in jail because the teen appeared to show "genuine remorse." Turner is expected to be released Friday after serving half that time.

Since then, advocacy groups have staged protests, and an online petition to remove Persky from the bench garnered more than 1 million signatures. A formal recall effort is underway, and scrutiny has come onto other cases where Persky has presided and delivered what critics call unusually lenient sentences.

Persky has been a judge within the Santa Clara County Superior Court system for 12 years and previously served as a prosecutor. The campaign website also links to statements from retired superior court judges who support Persky, as well as a statement from the California Judges Association.

Judges must work freely of fear from public opinion, the association said in its statement, first published in June. Persky is only one example of a judge who has experienced fierce criticism and even threats, the group said.

"If a party believes a judge made a wrong decision, that party may appeal the decision," the statement said. "It does harm to our constitutional system, however, to place judges in fear of recall or personal harm before making unpopular decisions that comply with the law."

The FBI Charged A Man Who Allegedly Wanted To Kill Obama And Burn A Mosque

A mugshot of Joseph Gariguilo from 2015.

Holliston Police Department

A Boston-area man who said he allegedly wanted to kill President Obama, bomb police stations, kill Homeland Security officials, and burn down a mosque was arrested by FBI agents Friday.

FBI agents found parts for an AR-15 assault rifle, ammunition, magazines, and quantities of chemical material that “can be used to create explosives and incendiaries” at the home of Joseph Garguilo, 48, according to an affidavit filed in federal court.

Federal agents also said they found handwritten notes at Garguilo’s home “threatening violence against members of the Islamic religion,” according to the affidavit.

Garguilo, who lives in Holliston, a town 30 miles southwest of Boston, appeared in federal court on Monday and was charged with being a “prohibited person in possession of ammunition” — allegedly in violation of a restraining order placed on Garguilo by his ex-wife in June, according to charging documents.

In a press release on Monday, the US Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts said the charges, if found guilty, carry “a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000,” but added that “actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.”

According to court documents, the FBI received a tip on July 27 about Garguilo from a woman, identified as Witness 1 in the affidavit, who claimed she was worried about Garguilo because he was “stockpiling food water and other weapons, to include tasers, mace guns, hunting knives and thermite,” a chemical compound that can be used to make explosives.

Witness 1 told the FBI that Garguilo “hates gays, minorities, and the police” and that “he will plant bombs in police stations... and kill as many homeland security officers as he can before they kill him," according to court documents. She also said that Garguilo believes the “structure of America will collapse” and "enter a state of martial law.”

The Boston Globe wrote that Witness 1 is Garguilo’s ex-wife, and has obtained restraining order against him on two occasions, in 2009 and again in June.

Garguilo's attorney, Mark R. Meehan, told reporters outside the federal courthouse that “there’s a long history of false allegations on behalf of the mother of his children,” insinuating that the allegations against Garguilo are related to “ongoing custody issues” involving the couple’s children.

Another individual, identified in the affidavit as Witness 2, claims to have been to Garguilo’s home recently and has seen a “partially assembled AR-15, crossbow and knives,” and stated that Garguilo wants “to attack a mosque and/or kill President Obama.” Specifically, it is alleged that Garguilo said he should have killed President Obama while on the golf course on a recent trip to Martha’s Vineyard.

Witness 2, who is described as a childhood friend, also recalled a conversation with Garguilo where he allegedly expressed a desire to "chain a mosque closed and burn it down" and "burn every motherfucker down in there.”

Witness 1 alleges that Garguilo has a history of drug use and might be using drugs again, while Witness 2 said they believed that Garguilo was using steroids because his muscle mass increased in a short period of time.

Garguilo is being held without bail and is expected to appear in court on Sept. 7.

Anthony Weiner Reportedly Investigated By Child Services After Sexting Photo Scandal

Joe Raedle / Getty

Child welfare workers have reportedly launched an investigation into Anthony Weiner, days after the disgraced former congressman and his wife separated following yet another sexting scandal.

The New York Post reported Wednesday that investigators with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) visited Weiner's apartment on Tuesday, citing a government source and worker at the apartment building.

It comes after the newspaper on Sunday published a series of chats and photos between Weiner and an anonymous woman, including one picture that appeared to show the congressman lying on his bed in his underwear with his young son next to him.

“Someone just climbed into my bed,” Weiner reportedly wrote.

“Really?” the woman responded. “You do realize you can see you® Weiner in that pic??”

On Monday, Weiner's wife, Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, announced she was separating from her husband.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, an ACS spokesperson would not confirm whether an investigation had been launched:

In order to protect children and their privacy, ACS does not comment on specific cases or allegations of child maltreatment, regardless of whether or not allegations have been reported, are being investigated, or have not resulted in an investigation.

Speaking to the Post, the 51-year-old former congressman denied he was the subject of an ACS probe.

Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after he was caught sending explicit photos of himself to women on social media, had his 2013 run for New York City mayor derailed when more sexts emerged.

Man Who Bragged About Smuggling More Than 100 Guns Into New York Pleads Guilty

Michael Bassier

Brooklyn DA

A man who was recorded telling an undercover police officer that he had smuggled more than 100 guns into New York faces 17 years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday.

Between 2014 and 2015, Michael Bassier, 32, arranged to have guns bought by “straw purchasers” in Georgia and then, over the course of 12 trips, used various cheap Chinatown, New York, bus lines to haul them up, authorities said.

At the same time, Bassier enlisted two of his co-conspirators to make gun purchases in Pittsburgh.

In addition to giving the straw purchasers a commission of $50 per weapon, Bassier paid between $150 and $300 per gun, investigators said. The weapons included 9mm Ruger and Glock pistols, .22 caliber Walther pistols, .40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistols, .45 caliber Taurus pistols, and a variety of assault weapons, such as multiple .22 long rifle caliber semi-automatic Walther Model MP Uzis, .39 mm caliber semi-automatic Norinco Model SKS, 9mm Luger semi-automatic Jimenez Arms Model JA25 and others.

Once he returned to New York, Bassier arranged to sell the guns to a buyer — the undercover officer — who paid between $800 and $1200 per gun, with the assault weapons costing $2,000 to $2,500. Investigators say that, in all, the officer spent roughly $130,000 on the guns.

At one point, Bassier even admitted that the smuggling operation was "completely illegal," an admission that was recorded by a wiretap.

“This defendant knew what he was doing was illegal, but had no qualms about putting the lives of Brooklyn residents at risk so that he could turn a hefty profit,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said. “These merchants of death willing to exploit lax gun laws outside of New York are now on notice that a prison cell awaits them in New York.”

Bassier pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree criminal sale of a firearm, two counts of second-degree criminal sale of a firearm, and one count of fourth-degree conspiracy.

Two of Bassier’s co-defendants have also pleaded guilty, with charges pending for five others, including the out-of-state straw purchasers.

Police Are Hunting For Whoever Keeps Shooting Sea Otters In California

Because the world is a horrible place and human beings are inherently evil, authorities in California are having to hunt for someone who is going around shooting sea otters — those furry, little water bunnies that are evidently too good for this earth.

Laura Rauch / AP

Three southern sea otters have been found shot dead between the Santa Cruz Harbor and Seacliff State Beach in Aptos between August 12 and 19, according go the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

"Initial necropsy results indicate the otters sustained gunshot wounds and died several days to several weeks prior to washing ashore," officials said in a statement on Tuesday.

Randy Wilder/Monterey Bay Aquarium / Via Flickr: usfws_pacificsw

The three otters killed were all males, including two sub-adults and one adult.

Officials are now offering a reward of at least $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whichever person(s)/human garbage monster(s) are responsible.

Lilian Carswell/USFWS / Via Flickr: usfws_pacificsw

Presumably, because they are SO DAMN CUTE, southern sea otters are protected under both US and Californian law.

Killing just one of them is punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 and even jail time.

Yale Professor Accused Of Sexual Harassment Says He'd Do Things Differently

Via Tobias Klenze / Via commons.wikimedia.org

Thomas Pogge, a renowned philosophy professor at Yale University recently accused of sexual misconduct in 2010, told BuzzFeed News Wednesday that in hindsight, "I would have done things differently."

Pogge's comment came in response to a BuzzFeed News question about if he agrees with any of the accusations against him and if he believes he did something wrong.

Pogge held his first class Wednesday since the allegations came to light. It began at 9 a.m. and went smoothly, without any major disruptions, which Pogge told BuzzFeed News he was expecting.

As first reported by BuzzFeed News in May, Pogge's former undergraduate thesis student, Fernanda Lopez Aguilar, along with two other women, filed a Title IX complaint with the Department of Education alleging Yale violated federal gender equity law by mishandling reports that Pogge sexually harassed students.

In the complaint, Lopez Aguilar alleges the university paid her $2,000 and made her sign a gag order after she reported that Pogge sexually harassed her, and then retaliated against her by firing her from a postgraduate fellowship.

Chile. The woman claims Pogge inappropriately flirted with her and suggested they share a room after he invited her to an academic research trip to Valparaíso, Chile. On one occasion, Aguilar reported that she felt Pogge slide behind her on her chair, press his erection against her and grab her breast.

A panel at Yale found there was evidence Pogge acted unprofessionally and irresponsibly but determined there was "insufficient evidence to charge him with sexual harassment."

Pogge told BuzzFeed News on Wednesday that he did nothing wrong, but he's "willing to leave and learn."

"Should I have invited her to come to Valparaiso?" he said. "I invited her. We were just two people in a rental car. You could say, 'well, no, you can't do that she's a former student of yours, this is a sexualized situation' ... If that was wrong, that was wrong. I took her there. I didn't make any moves or anything."

The professor said "everything I've worked for is opposed to" the allegations lodged against him.

"The assault is something that everyone agrees this is totally criminal, despicable," he said. "But nothing like this took place."

Pogge, who spent most of his class Wednesday lecturing about social justice, ethics, and morality, said he doesn't feel comfortable teaching at Yale, but sees no other choice.

"I am not comfortable with anything, not with my teaching, not with anything," he said. "It's a horrible situation to be in ... Where am I going to move? I am 63 years old."

A sophomore at Yale told BuzzFeed News she "went through a whole dilemma this summer" about taking Pogge's class, but needed the credit for her ethics, politics, and economics major.

"It's really hard, because you want to take an ethical stand and you don't want to disregard someone's experience, but is taking that stand worth jeopardizing your own academic career?" she said.

Following BuzzFeed News' investigation, more than 200 professors signed an open letter to “strongly condemn” Pogge.

“Pogge has engaged in behavior that violates the norms of appropriate professional conduct,” the letter states. “Nothing is more important to our philosophical community than the trust he has betrayed.”

Pogge condemned the letter on Wednesday, telling BuzzFeed News he has no respect for it.

"The punishment inflicted on me is social death, essentially," he said. "That's what they want. They want me to be totally erased. My stuff shouldn't be read anymore, so on and so forth. Everything I've worked for my entire life should be destroyed."

The Title IX complaint also includes evidence Pogge was disciplined for sexual harassment at Columbia University — where he taught before coming to Yale.

In a six-page post on a university blogging platform, Pogge denied Lopez Aguilar's complaints. “None of the alleged misconduct ever took place,” Pogge wrote.

Here’s What Donald Trump’s Supporters Want Him To Say To Mexico's President

Evan Vucci / AP

EVERETT, Wash. — Shortly before addressing a packed house Tuesday at the Xfinity Center, Republican nominee Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he will meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico on Wednesday.

Among the thousands of Trump supporters walking the arena’s halls, word of the meeting came as largely a surprise. But, after hearing of Trump’s plans, their message to him was clear: please play it cool.

“Have a good meeting, have a good understanding,” Jason Macdonald, a supporter of the candidate, told BuzzFeed News. “No name calling. None of the crazy stuff."

Many of Macdonald’s fellow attendees expressed similar feelings. They said it was time to put the business sense and negotiation skills Trump has touted for months on the campaign trail into practice.

Supporters of the Republican presidential nominee expressed faith in his abilities even if they weren’t sure how he would follow through on some of his promises — among them the plan to build a wall on the Mexican border and get Mexico to pay for it. Trump's meeting with Pena Nieto will therefore be an important test of his ability to sway foreign leaders, and his supporters are counting on it.

Devin Spooner, left, and his son, of Arlington, Wash.

Alex Kantrowitz / BuzzFeed News

“Trump is far more professional than people give him credit for,” said Don Hinzie of Granite Falls. “I think he’s a polished negotiator and a smart businessman.”

Hinzie, who spoke highly of Trump’s business sense, said the candidate should tell Pena Nieto to “get your checkbook out.”

But others suggested a more diplomatic approach. “We don’t need to be adversarial,” said Mike Balser, of Snohomish. “Obviously, I am pro-wall. I want the wall up just for national security. But you have to have a line of communication. You have to be able to communicate. We can’t have hate and hate mongering.”

Like Balser, other Trump supporters in attendance largely said their insistence on a diplomatic tone didn’t compromise their support for the wall.

Alex Kantrowitz / BuzzFeed News

Cathy Sand, a Trump supporter who is Mexican-American, said she agreed with Trump on immigration. “I am pro-wall. Absolutely,” she said, adding that Trump should be professional during the meeting.

"He doesn’t need to go in as aggressive as he has come in when he first said he was going to run for president," she said. "I think he’s toned it down a little bit, and I think that was very smart of him.”

Others saw less need for pleasantries. “Quit telling your people to come up here and mooch off our system,” said Brady, who would only give his first name. “Good fences make good neighbors.”

Michael Keesling of Prescott, Wash.

Alex Kantrowitz / BuzzFeed News

The drug cartels were another favorite topic of those in attendance.

“I could care less about the wall, I just want the drug cartels out," said Jack, a resident of Lake Stevens.

But Jeff Lawson, a Seattle resident, had a different take than most in attendance.

“I think Trump is just going to come and say fuck you, you’re going to pay for the wall, go to hell and here’s your criminals back," he said. "That’s the first thing he’s going to do when he gets in office, is sign the fucking executive order to run all these fucking felon illegals out of this country. You are sending us your criminals, you are sending us your dope dealers, you are sending us your fucking scum and you’re gonna take them back.”

Donald Trump Is Going To Mexico To Meet With The Country's President

Gerald Herbert / AP

Donald Trump said Tuesday night he will make a last-minute trip to Mexico on Wednesday to meet with President Enrique Peña Nieto, just hours before the Republican presidential nominee is expected to deliver an address on his immigration policy.

Trump confirmed the visit in a tweet.

Peña Nieto sent out an invitation to both Trump and Hillary Clinton last week, the office of the Mexican president said. Trump began considering taking up the offer as he faced increased scrutiny over contradicting statements over his immigration policy.

The Washington Post first reported the possible visit, citing sources in Mexico and the US. Mexico's government later confirmed Trump and Peña Nieto would meet privately.

Trump has made immigration a hallmark of his campaign, repeatedly stating he would build a wall along the US-Mexico border and make the Mexican government pay for it.

But Trump's comments have caught the ire of current and former Mexican officials, who have criticized him for his comments and have said repeatedly Mexico will not be paying for the wall.

Peña Nieto himself has not criticized Trump, but has said "There is no way that Mexico can pay [for] a wall like that."

Trump has talked on the campaign trail about creating a deportation force and has repeatedly tried to link crime rates with illegal immigration from Mexico.

But in recent days, Trump indicated to Hispanic leaders that he would be open to the legalization of immigrants.

During a recent interview on Fox News, the candidate said he would be open to "softening" his position on deportation.

Days letter, however, Trump and his campaign appeared to backtrack. He and surrogates of his campaign stated his immigration policy remained the same, but offered no specifics about his previous comments about a "deportation force" or what he would do with approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US.

The visit also comes as Peña Nieto faces an approval rating of 23 percent, the lowest he's faced since taking office in Dec. 2012.

Students Who Support Carrying Guns On Texas Campuses Share Concerns About The New Law

Ema O'Connor / BuzzFeed

HOUSTON — Many students at the University of Houston who support allowing guns on campus told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday that they have their own concerns about the law.

"If I know there's a gun in the room, I always feel the need to take control of it. I don't trust anyone but myself," Garrett, 22, a construction management senior from Texas who declined to give his last name, told BuzzFeed News.

"But still, everyone has the right to protect themselves," he added.

Students at UH began their second week of classes on Monday. It's the first semester of school after Senate Bill 11 — known as the campus carry law — went into effect.

The law allows students at state universities in Texas who have licenses to carry concealed handguns to bring those weapons anywhere on campus, with the exception of “exclusion zones.” These zones include the majority of dorms, some research centers, and any religious centers, areas with children, and health centers.

Before the law went into effect, UH created a task force of students, staff, and faculty to figure out how to implement the law. They designated exclusion zones and "secure storage areas" where students can leave firearms while they are in gun-free spaces. So far, the only official storage area is in the UH police department, which is located on the edge of campus — far away from the majority of class buildings and residence halls.

The task force received around 2,500 emails from the campus community expressing "a wide range of emotions and concerns," UH executive director of media relations Michael S. Rosen told BuzzFeed News. And a number of students and professors — including the president of UH's faculty senate, Jon Snow — have spoken out against the law.

Still, many students believe in the law and say they would even carry themselves. But it's hard to find students who say there are no flaws in the law — or in the way UH is implementing it — and students who will say they are in fact carrying. Some students who support the law also said their primary concern is other students who now have the right to carry.

Tony Brown, 20, told BuzzFeed News that he plans on carrying himself when he gets his license in November, but that he doesn't trust other students to carry. "College students aren't very mature," he said. "The slightest issue could escalate very quickly."

UH has a high number of veterans on its campus — around 1,800 of the school's total 42,738 students, according to the UH Office of Veteran Services — and many of them told BuzzFeed News they support the law.

"Even if I was [carrying], I wouldn't tell you," Harrison R., a 30-year-old Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who was deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan, told BuzzFeed News. "It would give away my tactical advantage."

"There's a lot of socioeconomic issues in this area, a lot of crime. Students who are vulnerable to that should be able to carry," Harrison said, sitting in the Center for Veteran Student Services. "Everyone has the constitutional right to defend themselves. There's no reason that should be suspended in this space. It's arbitrary."

Even so, Harrison said, he would prefer that those carrying would go "above and beyond" the training required by the law.

Enoch, a 36-year-old Army veteran and business major, agreed that people who plan to use their guns to defend themselves in case of a school shooting, for example, should be highly trained. "You don't want people accidentally shooting the innocent people around them and leaving the bad guy, just because they've never really shot before," he said.

What worried him even more, he said, was the possibility of what he called "friendly fire" in the exclusion zones. "On military deployment, there are gun-free safe zones like that," Enoch said.

"Once an Afghan soldier — he was a friend, he just got angry and snapped — took a gun and went into a zone where no one had them, and he was able to kill more people because of that," he said. "I don't want that happening here."

Chicago Sees Deadliest Month In Nearly 20 Years As Gun Violence Surges

Associated Press

The fatal shooting of Nykea Aldridge in Chicago as she pushed her baby in a stroller last week may have shocked the nation, but it also served as a grim reminder that the city is in the throes of an incredibly deadly year that has so far seen nearly 490 people killed by violence.

The same weekend Aldridge was caught in crossfire, two men were killed and several others wounded in multiple shootings that took place within one 20-minute period. At least 10 people, including Aldridge, were killed over the course of the weekend.

But it was the story of Aldridge, a 32-year-old mother of four and cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, that grabbed national headlines. In was in the middle of the afternoon and she was walking through Chicago's Parkway Gardens neighborhood to register her kids for school when the gunshots ripped through the air. One bullet struck her in the head.

"This is my baby girl," Diann Aldridge, Nykea's mother, said Sunday. "Her life is gone too soon. Too soon she was taken away from us."

On Twitter, Wade lamented Aldridge's killing, calling it "another act of senseless gun violence."

Aldridge's death also added to what has become the city's most deadly month in 19 years, according to the Chicago Tribune. There have been so far more than 400 shootings this month. And as of Monday, at least 79 people had been killed as a result.

The weekend prior Nykea Aldridge's killing, 25 people, including five who died, were shot in a 14-hour period. The weekend before that, five people died and 19 were wounded in shootings.

One of the victims, the son of a police officer, was due to return to college hours later. The 19-year-old was sitting on the porch with a friend when he was shot in what police have said was a case of mistaken identity.

The Tribune reported that so far there have been 487 homicides in 2016 — nearly matching the 12-month total of 491 in 2015. Already, Chicago's gun-related homicide count has surpassed that of New York and Los Angeles combined.

New York City reported 222 shooting homicides through Aug. 21, Los Angeles recorded 176 through Aug. 20.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the spike in violence this summer is complex and currently being studied, but acknowledged that it is a major problem.

"The violence in the city is unacceptable and its unacceptably high," Guglielmi told BuzzFeed News.

Guglielmi pointed to what he described as a "lack of accountability around gun crimes" as a major driver of the violence. For example, Guglielmi said, Illinois has no mandatory minimum punishments for gun crimes, creating a "revolving door" of people who commit gun crimes after being incarcerated and released onto the street shortly thereafter.

"This is has been a very complex challenge for the city to grapple with and it’s not something we can arrest our way out of it," he added.

Aldridge's case illustrates the problem, Guglielmi said. One of the two brothers charged with murder in the killing, 26-year-old Darwin Sorrells Jr., was on parole after being sentenced to six years in prison for a gun-related conviction. Guglielmi said Sorrells served less than half of his sentence and was released in February.

He and his 22-year-old brother Derren Sorrells, also charged with murder in Aldridge's killing, were reportedly gang members, the younger with six felony convictions on his record.

Guglielmi said that the vast majority of Chicago's shootings are committed by a relatively small group of offenders — "about 1,400 to 1,500 individuals" — concentrated in just a few police districts on the city's south and west sides. Many are young men enlisted by gangs to "commit brazen acts of violence" using guns as the "tools of their trade."

And the penalties these offenders face, Guglielmi argued, don't function as deterrents.

"We’ve literally done interviews with gang members and they continue to tell us that the penalties imposed by the gang far outweigh what the criminal justice system will do," he said.

Other factors potentially exacerbating the violence include a lack of economic opportunity, Guglielmi said, and tensions between the community and officers. Those tensions are running particularly high due to recent police shootings across the US, including the October 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald and last month's shooting of Paul O'Neal, both in Chicago.

"No one wants to become the next viral video," Guglielmi added, referring to the effect the footage has had on officers. "These kind of factors have an impact on workforces."

Associated Press

Mayor Rahm Emanuel did not respond to BuzzFeed News' requests for comment on the spike in shootings, but earlier this month spoke about public confidence in police, saying they are "part of the solution."

On Tuesday, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson moved to fire the officers involved in McDonald's shooting. And Emanuel is pushing for changes to the way police shootings are investigated.

The Chicago Police Department has also taken measures to address what it sees as the causes of the gun violence. Last month, Johnson partnered with state lawmakers to craft legislation that would more severely penalize criminals with repeat gun convictions. Illinois Sen. Kwame Raoul, the sponsor of the legislation, did not respond to BuzzFeed News' request for comment.

Guglielmi also said that his department has worked to identify potential offenders and victims using an algorithm that analyses risk factors, such as gang affiliation and past convictions. The city is trying to take guns off the street, including 6,000 this year, via a variety of programs.

Despite those efforts, however, the violence has continued to rise.

"We have to really set up that culture of accountability," Guglielmi said. "It’s something the city has to do collectively."

Hurricane Watches, Warnings Issued As Storms Take Aim At Florida And Hawaii

A satellite image shows Hurricane Madeline approaching Hawaii from the east on Monday evening.

NOAA

Residents of Hawaii and Florida braced for tropical cyclones Tuesday as forecasters issued hurricane warnings and watches for two separate storms bearing down on the states.

Forecasters at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Hurricane Madeline, churning westward through the Pacific, would pass "dangerously close" on Wednesday to Hawaii's Big Island, the southernmost island in the archipelago. While a second, stronger hurricane, Lester, is also expected to approach the state by Labor Day weekend.

In Florida, a hurricane watch was posted Tuesday over a tropical depression brewing in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The system, which could be named Hermine if it strengthens into a tropical storm, is forecast to make landfall along Florida;s Gulf Coast later this week between Tampa and Panama City.

Both states are preparing for heavy rain, powerful winds, big waves, coastal flooding, and erosion.

Forecasters expect the depression to make landfall in Florida as a tropical storm as early as Thursday. More than 1,000 sandbags were handed out on Tuesday to protect local businesses and residents in low-lying areas, CBS News reported. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn urged residents to use common sense and not drive into standing water.

Federal regulators said offshore workers were evacuated from at least nine oil rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico that were in the path of storm. Some of the rigs were also repositioned.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Madeline was a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, and forecasters said the storm would likely weaken before potentially making landfall. A tropical storm watch was also in effect for the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.

If Madeline makes landfall on the Big Island, it would be the first hurricane to strike the island since records started in 1949. The last hurricane to hit the state, Iniki, made landfall on Kauai in 1992, causing six deaths and widespread damage.

A second hurricane, Lester, is following close behind Madeline in the Pacific, and is expected to pass just north of the islands on Saturday. Still, it could bring additional heavy rains and flooding to the state.

These Are Not The Clowns Who Are Scaring A South Carolina Town

Photos circulating among residents of Greenville and in the media were originally posted on Facebook by a performance art duo in New Hampshire.

ICYMI, residents of Greenville, South Carolina, have been on edge after several people reported seeing clowns trying to lure children into the woods.

ICYMI, residents of Greenville, South Carolina, have been on edge after several people reported seeing clowns trying to lure children into the woods.

It got to the point that property managers at the Fleetwood Manor apartments sent a warning letter to residents.

"There [have] been several [conversations] and a lot of complaints to the office regarding a clown or a person dressed in clown clothing talking to children or trying to lure children into the woods,” the letter stated.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office received two calls regarding clowns on Aug. 20, and one resident filed an incident report the next day.

On Monday, a photo began to be passed around by residents. One woman shared it with BuzzFeed News, saying she had gotten it from a friend who got it from a friend. Though she didn't take the photo, the redheaded clown looked familiar, she said.

Mountain Lions Hemmed In By Los Angeles Freeways May Go Extinct, Researchers Warn

National Park Service / Via Flickr: santamonicamtns

A small population of mountain lions hemmed in by a network of busy Los Angeles freeways could go extinct in a matter of decades if new blood isn't added to the gene pool and reproduction rates aren't maintained, researchers warn.

National Park Service / Via Flickr: santamonicamtns

The improbability of the big cats crossing traffic-heavy freeways to get to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area has earned them a measure of celebrity as each new litter of kittens is photographed and documented.

But it is that isolation, combined with the mortal dangers of passing vehicles and the introduction of rodenticides in the food chain, that could lead to their demise, researchers warned in a new report released Tuesday.

"Fifty-plus years ago when the 101 Freeway was built, no one was thinking about wildlife connectivity," said Seth Riley, a National Park Service ecologist and associate adjunct professor at UCLA who was a senior author of the study. "We have worked for years with our partners to increase connectivity across the 101 for all animals, but this study really drives home how serious the threat is for mountain lions, the species most at risk of being lost."

National Park Service / Via Flickr: santamonicamtns

The National Park Service has monitored more than 30 mountain lions in and around the Santa Monica Mountains since 2002. But in the coming decades, the genetic diversity of the population is expected to decline significantly, affecting the ability of the mountain lions to reproduce, a phenomenon called "inbreeding depression."

Should that occur, the model developed by the scientists predicts a 99.7% chance of extinction within 50 years.

National Park Service / Via Flickr: santamonicamtns

There is hope, however. Researchers determined that the arrival of even one new mountain lion to the range every two to four years should maintain current levels of genetic diversity.

Efforts to make the perilous journey more safe include a possible wildlife crossing spanning the 101 Freeway, which is the biggest barrier between the Santa Monica Mountains and large natural areas to the north. A private fundraising effort to help pay for the project, which is being drafted by the California Department of Transportation, has already been launched.

Only one male mountain lion, dubbed P-12, has been documented successfully crossing the 101 Freeway in 2009.

The findings were published in the research journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Louisiana Residents Still Reeling From Floods Now Have To Fear Tropical Storms

Frankie Kindig

Amy K. Nelson/BuzzFeed News

FRENCH SETTLEMENT, LA — Leaning back in her chair on her porch, Miss Frankie Kindig surveyed the damage that historic floods earlier this month did to her trailer a few yards from the banks of the Amite River.

Kindig, 77, has spent the last week tearing out carpet then pulling up hundreds of staples by hand, using a pair of needle nose pliers and a screwdriver. Once her floors are dry and repaired, she vows to follow the next carpet installer around “with a hammer, and if he puts in extra staples, I’m gonna hit him in the head.”

Floods have been a part of life for Kindig since she moved here in 1976, the first person to settle along this isolated stretch of river bayous an hour and a half north of New Orleans.

But Kindig had never seen flooding like what hit the region two weeks ago, which left at least 13 people dead statewide and at least 80% of homes in French Settlement damaged, according to the mayor. Roads were washed out and covered in a foot river mud, debris, and raw sewage from thousands of overflowing septic tanks. EATEL, the local phone company, has been working overtime to get service restored and the power only came back in the last few days.

And now, as a series of tropical depressions and disturbances are lining up in the Atlantic as Hurricane season reaches its peak, French Settlement residents — along with local and federal officials — are increasingly nervous that a massive storm could sweep through and wipe them out.

The closest tropical depression is already making its way into the Gulf, following a track similar to the storm that would eventually become Katrina. And while forecasters expect it to take a sharp turn towards the east once it reaches Tropical Storm strength later this week, several other storms have already begun forming off the coast of Africa could be heading toward the Gulf.

“It’s a worry …. Hurricanes bother me. They blow that water in big time,” Kindig said, adding that Hurricane Katrina laid waste to French Settlement, uprooting trees and telephone poles and making the roads impassable for days.

Amy K. Nelson/BuzzFeed News

Local and federal officials are also worried that, given the slow pace of recovery from the floods, a hurricane could be catastrophic.

The cleanup has been slow going in part because the city doesn’t collect property or sales tax. It instead relies largely on volunteers — who have come from around the state, Mississippi, Texas and even New York — and FEMA.

“We had a flood that mankind has never seen … we had horses swimming by,” said Lawrence Callender, French Settlement’s Assistant Chief of Police. Standing outside the city’s main municipal building, the scale of the destruction is plain. Workmen are gutting the entire building, finished in 1976, because of water damage, and it remains to be seen if it needs to be torn down.

Amy K. Nelson/BuzzFeed News

“It had never flooded. We had water up to the windows,” Mayor Toni Guitrau said, a look of frustration in her eyes. “The good news is we had no deaths” locally, she added, though, “we’ve had some illnesses from bacteria and lung problems” because of the pollution and lack of running water. The town’s parish priest remains bed-ridden with a lung infection.

“We’re refugees” Callender said with a laugh. The town government is working out of the local Catholic church, which is also providing hot meals for residents and recovery volunteers and serves as a clearinghouse for donated diapers, cleaning supplies and food.

Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of the area was significant, but local officials worry that even a moderately sized hurricane could be far more catastrophic, given the saturated soil and tons of debris that remains to be removed.

Piles of furniture, appliances, and soggy drywall rise five feet or more above much of the town roads, awaiting pickup by Parish officials. And while the main roadways have been plowed of mud, side roads are still being dug out with CATs, thanks to volunteers like Eric Hammerberg and Jed Fisher, who run JF Constitution Services in New Orleans.

Fisher’s wife, Adrienne Katner, a researcher at Louisiana State University who conducts lead testing in New Orleans, arranged for researchers from Virginia Tech to come to French Settlement to test drinking water from resident’s wells. Although many are dug deep enough to avoid contamination, many residents’ water supplies remain at significant risk from the sewage-tainted flood waters — and the floods burned out many motors on their pumps.

The lack of running water has already taken a toll on the health of residents. “Anybody with a compromised immune system is at risk,” Callender says. “One little cut can give you a staph infection. We see ‘em come in every night [to the church] looking for supplies with boils, open wounds, staph infections. Our worst fear is an epidemic. It’s possible … As resilient as these people are, we’re wallowing in sewage.”

The possibility of hurricanes is causing “a lot of anxiety. We didn’t get any wind with the floods. But if we get any wind at all, the grounds saturated, the trees will just fall over. There’s nothing holding them down at all,” Callender said.

“We’re just concerned about getting our debris out within the next week, all the debris out before any tropical storm might think about coming in here, so it’s in the air and everywhere,” Mayor Toni Guitrau said.

Rafael Lemaitre, Director of Public Affairs at FEMA, said the agency shares those concerns, and are already taking steps to prepare for a potential disaster. “We are monitoring those [storms] very closely, and are already in contact with state and local officials in areas that could be potentially affected.”

Lemaitre also urged local residents to begin preparing for the worst now, noting that in emergency situations neighbors often become first responders in helping other residents. FEMA is “strongly advising folks … to continue listening to state and local officials” about potential evacuations, Lemaitre said, adding that residents should “take steps now to prepare. The time to prepare is not when you’re getting tropical storm warnings.”

But at this point, local residents are still struggling to rebuild from the initial floods.

Butch “Moony” Jenkins and his family

Amy K. Nelson/BuzzFeed News

A mile up the road from Miss Frankie Kindig’s trailer, Butch “Moony” Jenkins and his family are working in the late afternoon heat inside the Last Call bar. Where the bar and bathrooms once were located there’s now a gaping hole in the floor, exposing the muddy ground below the raised building. Construction debris litters the floor, and huge sections of the bar’s interior walls have been torn away.

“I hadn’t served the first beer out of it before the floods,” says Jenkins, who bought the bar just three weeks before the flood. There was “little more than a foot” of water in the bar, saturating drywall and the floors. Jenkins and his family have have spent days ripping out warped spots of the floor, repairing plumbing, and shoveling mud.

If everything goes according to plan, the bar, a mainstay for locals who live along the river, will be open before the end of September. “Hopefully, just a couple more weeks. I need to open up. Bad,” Jenkins said.

As for the threat of another flood, Jenkins says he simply can’t think about that. “All we can do is put it together and hope for the best,” he says. “There’s nothing you can do, just keep going. You can get depressed and stick your lip out, and all that stuff. But that won’t do no good.”

Raymond Barrick

Amy K. Nelson/BuzzFeed News

Raymond Barrick, whose family moved in next to Kindig a year after she set down roots, said this year’s floods was one of the few times he’s ever left because of water.

Barrick, 47, stands in his front yard, ankle deep in the mud. “I hear they’ve got a shortage on this river bottom silt,” he says with a laugh. “I got seven acres of it, they can come suck up as much as they want!”

Tanned from years of paddling the Amite River, Barrick says that while he’s weathered plenty of storms, this was different. “When it broke the bank, I could see the water coming in. I was puttin’ my stuff inside up on blocks. And within 45 minutes it was this deep,” he said, raising his hand several feet off the ground.

The flood waters badly damaged his trailer and swept away much of his possessions.

And though he knows hurricane season is bearing down, he remains defiant. “I ain’t worried about. Bring it on. Shit, after this one, with three foot [of water in the house], you can’t hurt anything. It’s all out there, everything I own. Even everything I tied down. The stuff [that was] tied down, the current was so strong it broke the lines. It’s all out there,” he says. “I ain’t leaving. I’ve been here 45 years.”

Sipping a cold Milwaukee’s Best Ice, Kindig also waves off the idea of leaving her home because of the threat of another flood.

“To me, I have the perfect place,” she said. “You couldn’t get me outta here with a stick of dynamite.”

Harrowing 911 Calls Released From Orlando Nightclub Massacre

A makeshift memorial outside the Pulse nightclub, a month after the mass shooting in Orlando, Fla.

Emergency dispatchers in Florida were flooded with harrowing 911 calls from witnesses and frantic family members as shots rang out during the June massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

One mother told dispatchers her son was hiding inside the bathroom of the club. Another woman nearby said stray bullets were hitting the walls and door of her building.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday released the audio of the 911 calls made during the June 12 attack, where 49 people were killed and another 53 injured in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Phelan M. Ebenhack / AP

The gunman, Omar Mateen, was killed when authorities stormed the Orlando night club.

Calls flooded Orange County Sheriff and Orlando Police Departments as shots rang out inside Pulse. One caller told dispatchers he had just walked out of the club when the firing started.

"We we're leaving the club and as soon as we left, gunshots were going like crazy," he said.

One mother called police from her home while her son was on the other line.

"My son is stuck in the bathroom down there, and I got him on the other line," she told the dispatcher.

"What I need him to do is just stay where he is," a police dispatcher told her.

w.soundcloud.com

While the Orlando Police Department was the main agency in charge of the incident, 911 calls began to overflow to the sheriff's office as people heard the barrage of gunfire around 2 a.m.

One man who lived near the club called police when he said someone was knocking on his door.

Confused and scared, the man told a dispatcher in Spanish he had no weapons, and he believed someone was attacking the nightclub. The dispatcher told him deputies and officers were responding to an active shooter at Pulse.

The Orlando Sentinel reported Orlando Police had declined to release the 911 calls their department received during the shooting, arguing they are exempted from public disclosure.

Multiple media organizations, including the Orlando Sentinel and the Associated Press, have sued the agency for the recordings.
