An ICE Officer Apologized After Sharing A Meme Depicting Umbrellas As Muslim Women

Lm Otero / AP

An US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer from San Francisco apologized after sharing an offensive meme on social media.

David Jennings, a field office director for enforcement and removal operations, posted the meme of three large umbrellas, supposedly mistaken for women in traditional Islamic dress, on LinkedIn three months ago. The San Francisco Chronicle first reported that the image had been shared by Jennings.

The photo is accompanied with the words: "I spent 20 minutes talking to them to learn more about their culture until the barman told me they were umbrellas."

LinkedIn / Via sfchronicle.com

"The post was directed to a former co-worker and instructor in Arab culture and was meant to poke fun at myself and use me as an example to show that everyone can and should keep learning about people from different cultures, including people like me with extensive experience working with different cultures and traditions," said Jennings in a statement provided to BuzzFeed News by ICE.

In his original posting, now deleted, he did tag a person he called "my terrorism mentor."

"I am horrified that the post would be taken as anything other than a dig at myself, but upon further reflection, I understand how it could be interpreted otherwise and am truly sorry. It was not my intention to offend anyone and I hope that the explanation of my intent assuages any hurt the post may have inadvertently caused. I have removed the post to avoid anyone else being offended," said Jennings.

The Chronicle reported that another ICE officer "liked" the post. Other LinkedIn activity by Jennings show him liking posts about border security news, including a story on the possible use of DNA testing to prove family relationships, and posts complaining about sanctuary states and cities.

The removal of the meme comes as ICE ramps up operations around the country, with more than 150 people arrested in northern California in just three days during a sweep by ICE officers last month.

President Trump's tighter immigration orders called for the hiring of an extra 10,000 ICE officers to undertake arrests and deportation proceedings. In the 2017 fiscal year, arrests by ICE officers jumped 30% from 2016, according to data from the Pew Research Center.

Let Us Break Down The Bizarre Right-Wing Conspiracy Theory Roseanne Barr Has Tweeted About

Barr’s claim on Friday that “Trump has freed so many children” from sex trafficking rings sounds very similar to the “QAnon” conspiracy theory she’s previously tweeted about.

On Friday, Roseanne Barr tweeted a message that left a lot of people scratching their heads — and some conspiracy theorists applauding her.

On Friday, Roseanne Barr tweeted a message that left a lot of people scratching their heads — and some conspiracy theorists applauding her.

Twitter

The tweet praised Trump for breaking up human trafficking rings around the world. Barr also cryptically alluded to human bondage in unnamed, unspecified "high places."

On the one hand, a MAGA tweet from Barr is unsurprising. She's expressed a wide swath of political views over the years, but has strongly supported Trump's presidency.

On ABC's revival of her hit '90s sitcom, Roseanne, the title character is also pro-Trump.

After the show premiered on Tuesday to massively high ratings, Trump personally called Barr to congratulate her, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed to BuzzFeed News.

The show has already been renewed for another season.

Barr, however, pushed back by saying she was just celebrating Trump's legitimate policies.

They're part of a pro-Trump mega-conspiracy theory that claims, among other things, that top Democrats are secret Satan worshippers running a global child sex trafficking ring and Trump is going to take them down.

A spokesperson for Barr did not immediately return a request for comment.

"The Storm" is related to "Pizzagate," a right-wing conspiracy theory which claims Democrats are involved in a pedophile sex ring run inside Comet Ping Pong, a pizza restaurant in DC.

"Pizzagate" came to a head in Dec. 2016, when a man fired a rifle inside the restaurant after he went there to "self-investigate" the theory

Well, it all started on 4chan, as many of these sorts of things do.

As Select All explained shortly after the theory's conception, an anonymous 4channer who went by Q posted a thread in Oct. 2017 in /pol/, the site's political discussion board (and a hotbed of white supremacist views and conspiracy theories).

The thread was titled "The Calm Before The Storm," likely in reference to a cryptic statement Trump had made earlier that month in which he told reporters, without explanation, that they were witnessing "the calm before the storm."

Claiming to be a high-ranking government worker with knowledge of White House affairs, Q (aka "QAnon") would post incredibly vague "crumbs" of intel about Trump getting ready to take down the Deep State, pedophilia rings and all.

Thanks to a few coincidences and a lot of collective mental gymnastics (such as a photo of some islands being taken as evidence that Q was aboard Air Force One), a lot of people believed Q and dedicated themselves to deciphering his messages.

In the months since it started, "The Storm" has spread to YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, and pretty much anywhere else conspiracy theories proliferate.

Barr has tweeted about "QAnon" before, which led to the speculation her trafficking tweet was related to "The Storm."

In Nov. 2017 — just about three walks after the conspiracy theory first kicked off — Barr tweeted a question: "who is Q?"

Five minutes later, she tweeted "tell Qanon to DM me in the nexxt 24 hours."

Shortly after these tweets, Barr's Twitter account went down and her website temporarily disappeared, Entertainment Daily reported at the time. (According to Daily Beast, the website issues were due to routine maintenance.)

A few hours later, Barr returned to Twitter, saying she was "OK and back." She gave her followers a "thank you for worrying" and said she'd share an "explanation later on." (She never did.)

Twitter / Via entertainmentdaily.com

Still, some were not convinced it was really her, and replied asking for evidence an imposter hadn't taken over her Twitter.

And the following December, she temporarily quit Twitter (and deleted all her tweets in the process) after going on an angry tirade praising Trump and lambasting liberals.

She returned to the platform in January.

If she believes in "The Storm" or not, we probably won't get further clarification from Barr — she said she's not going to tweet about the issue again.

The Mormon Church Just Put Non-White Men In Top Leadership Posts For The First Time Ever

Gerrit Gong, left, and Ulisses Soares.

LDS Church

The Mormon church appointed an Asian American man and a Brazilian man to top leadership positions Sunday, marking a historic moment for the faith that — since its founding in the 1800s — had previously only had top leadership with European ancestry.

Gerrit Gong and Ulisses Soares both joined the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which is the second highest governing body of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often known informally as the Mormon Church. The quorum has broad authority to govern the church and is second only to the three-person First Presidency.

Gong, 64, was born in Redwood City, California, and is of Asian ancestry. Soares, 59, was born in São Paulo, Brazil.

The appointments are the first since Russell M. Nelson took over as president of the church in January, following the death of the previous president Thomas S. Monson.

A Baton Rouge Police Officer Was Fired For Of His Role In The Killing Of Alton Sterling

In this July 5, 2016 file photo taken from video footage, Alton Sterling is held by two Baton Rouge police officers, with one holding a hand gun, outside a convenience store.

Arthur Reed / AP

The Baton Rouge police officer who shot and killed Alton Sterling outside a convenience store in 2016, sparking nationwide protests, has been fired, officials announced Friday.

"Our police officers are held to a higher standard, fear cannot be a driver for an officer's response to every incident. Unreasonable fear within an officer is dangerous," Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said.

Blane Salomoni, who was fired, was one of two officers who struggled with Sterling July 5, 2016, firing six shots that proved fatal and sparked a series of protests throughout the Baton Rouge area.

The officers were responding to a 911 call about a man brandishing a gun and threatening someone in the parking lot of the Triple S Food Mart. When they arrived, they found Sterling, 37, who had been selling CDs in the parking lot.

According to the Justice Department, which reviewed the shooting, the officers ordered Sterling to put his hands on the hood of a car. He initially refused and a struggle ensued, at which point Salamoni drew his gun and pointed it at Sterling's head.

Sterling then placed his hands on the hood of the car. When he tried to move his hands, the other officer, Howie Lake II, used a taser. His partner, who did fire his gun, was suspended for three days.

Eventually all three men ended up struggling on the ground. In video of the altercation, the two officers can be seen pinning Sterling, and at one point, once can be heard yelling, "he's got a gun." Seconds later, a series of shots are heard.

youtube.com

According to a police report, the officers said they saw a gun in Sterling's pocket during the altercation. And in the video, one of the officers can be seen removing an object from Sterling's pocket.

The disciplinary action taken against Salomoni came just days after Louisiana's attorney general announced his decision that the two white police officers would not be criminally charged in Sterling's death. That decision came 11 months after the Department of Justice came to a similar conclusion.

"Clueless" Star Stacey Dash Has Ended Her Short-Lived Bid For Congress

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Stacey Dash, best known for starring in the hit 1995 movie Clueless and later becoming an outspoken conservative commentator, has ended her long-shot bid to become a congresswoman.

In a statement Friday, Dash said she pulled out of the race to represent California's 44th congressional district because the "overall bitterness surrounding our political process, participating in the rigors of campaigning, and holding elected office would be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of my family." Dash had filed last month to run as a Republican, pitting her against incumbent Nanette Barragán and Compton Mayor Aja Brown, both Democrats.

California's 44th congressional district runs through a heavily Democratic slice of Los Angeles, representing parts of South LA as well as Compton, Carson, and North Long Beach.

In her statement, Dash said she still hopes to help people "on the national level," and that she believes "we live under a system of 'Plantation Politics,' which offers people on the lower end of the economic spectrum little more than symbolic gestures instead of true political empowerment and improvement."

Though best known for her acting — which includes roles in more than 30 films as well as TV shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation — Dash worked most recently as a commentator for Fox News. She joined the network in 2014 and was suspended in 2015 for saying President Obama "could give a shit" about terrorism.

Fox News decided not to renew Dash's contract last fall, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Dash also was an early supporter of Donald Trump and wrote a book titled There Goes My Social Life: From Clueless to Conservative.

On her campaign website, Dash promised to take a bipartisan approach on issues including homelessness, education, and unemployment. But in her announcement Friday, Dash doubled down on her criticism of Democrats, saying that for decades the party had forgotten people.

"My political positions have often been labeled as controversial," Dash said, "but the real controversy is how decades of government corruption and political dis-empowerment have created a system where skyrocketing home prices, dirty needles in the streets, and long bus trips to other districts for jobs are somehow considered acceptable by the government officials representing the 44th District."

Everybody Calm Down, The Vatican Says The Pope Didn't Say Hell Doesn't Exist

Also, the teachings of the Catholic Church are pretty clear about the fact that hell exists.

Marco Bertorello / AFP / Getty Images

The Vatican on Friday refuted a recent Italian newspaper story in which Pope Francis allegedly said hell does not exist.

Liberal-leaning Italian newspaper La Repubblica published an "interview" between the paper's founder, Eugenio Scalfari, 93, and Francis on Thursday in which the leader of the Catholic Church is quoted as saying that hell "does not exist."

SCALFARI: Your Holiness, in our previous meeting you told me that our species will disappear in a certain moment and that God, still out of his creative force, will create new species. You have never spoken to me about the souls who died in sin and will go to hell to suffer it for eternity. You have however spoken to me of good souls, admitted to the contemplation of God. But what about bad souls? Where are they punished?

POPE FRANCIS: They are not punished, those who repent obtain the forgiveness of God and go among the ranks of the souls who contemplate Him. But those who do not repent, and therefore cannot be forgiven, disappear. Hell does not exist – what exists is the disappearance of sinful souls.

Via rep.repubblica.it

The Holy See Press Office referenced this in their statement about the story on Friday, calling the article "the fruit of [Scalfari's] reconstruction" and that "no quotations... should be considered as a faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father."

For example, in a 2014 vigil for victims of mafia violence, the pope begged members of the mafia to repent or face eternal damnation.

"The power, the money you have now from so many dirty deals, from so many Mafia crimes, blood-stained money, blood-stained power – you will not be able to take that with you to the other life," he said. "There is still time not to end up in hell, which awaits you if you continue on this road."

Also, last year during a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Francis said a godless life leads to hell.

"Our Lady foretold, and warned us about, a way of life that is godless and indeed profanes God in his creatures,” he said. “Such a life — frequently proposed and imposed — risks leading to hell.”

And, just for the record, the teachings of the Catholic Church are pretty clear about the fact that hell exists.

"The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity," the Catechism of the Catholic Church states. "Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, 'eternal fire.' The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs."

Bros In Trump's White House Apparently Bond By "Icing" Each Other At Work

Bro, you just got iced, bro!

If you don't know what icing is, you clearly have not been around bro culture since 2009.

As the video below explains, "icing" is a drinking game where one bro hides a Smirnoff Ice (a Chick Drink) for another bro to find. When the bro finds it, he has to get on a knee and chug.

Bros can also stop an icing by pulling out their own ice and making their attacker drink it instead, in what's known as an "ice block."

Since the game was invented, no bro has been safe, not even at their place of work...

And apparently, in the Trump administration. According to the Washington Post, workers in an "obscure White House office" celebrated their deputy director's 30th birthday earlier this year by icing him.

Stephon Clark Was Shot Six Times In The Back By Sacramento Police, Independent Autopsy Finds

Facebook

Stephon Clark, the unarmed black man killed by Sacramento police in his grandmother's backyard, was shot six times in the back and twice in his side, according to an autopsy commissioned by his family.

The autopsy also found that it took 3 to 10 minutes for Clark to succumb to his wounds.

The results, released on Friday, contradict the police narrative that Clark was charging at two officers when they opened fire, family attorney Benjamin Crump said at a news conference.

Crump said this information shows that Clark, 22, clearly was not moving toward officers in a threatening manner and that they could have given him time to comply with their commands to show them his hands when they opened fire.

"From the time this investigation began, statements provided by the Sacramento Police Department have proven to be self-serving, untrustworthy, and unreliable," he said. "This independent autopsy affirms that Stephon was not a threat to police and was slain in another senseless police killing under increasingly questionable circumstances."

The Sacramento Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The autopsy, conduct by Dr. Bennett Omalu, known for his work with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in NFL players, found that Clark was shot four times in the lower back, twice in his neck, under an armpit, and in the leg.

Stephon Clark died two weeks ago in his grandmother's backyard as police were investigating reports of burglary in the neighborhood. Police say officers believed he was armed, but it turned out he was carrying a cell phone.

His death has sparked days of protests throughout Sacramento.

Hundreds Of Students At Howard University Have Taken Over A Building To Protest Stolen Funds

“This whole embezzlement scandal was the icing on the cake.”

The students began the occupation of the building on Thursday afternoon and have held the facility for over 24 hours.

Organizer Alexis McKinney, a senior at Howard and leader of the student group HU Resist, noted at a news conference Friday that students had been planning the occupation for months before the financial aid scandal broke because of other concerns. So news of the embezzlement scandal just "added fuel to the fire."

"It’s more of a systemic issue, there were hundreds of employees that knew about this, that were complicit in this," McKinney said.

Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick released a statement explaining that he had learned of a possible misappropriation of funds in December 2016 and ordered a review.

"The investigation found that from 2007 to 2016, university grants were given to some university employees who also received tuition remission," he wrote. "The audit revealed that the combination of university grants and tuition remission exceeded the total cost of attendance. As a result, some individuals received inappropriate refunds."

The investigation was completed in September 2017 and, as a result, six employees were fired for gross misconduct and neglect of duties, Frederick added.

"We will refer this matter for criminal prosecution, as appropriate," he said.

Students took control of the administration building — allowing campus police and facilities staff to remain — and are refusing to leave until their list of demands are met.

"It's not like a sudden reaction, it’s has been building up slowly and now it just came to the surface," Asif Mohiuddin told BuzzFeed News.

“I’ve seen my friends having to leave cause of problems of financial aid, friends who’d been accommodated in place that ... [were] not livable," he said. "At some point you are all tired of it. This kind of million-dollar embezzlement, at this point we couldn’t take it anymore. We felt like it was the right time to take the best action."

"It was attention that we needed, we are really grateful for it," Mohiuddin said.

Donations of bottled water, pizza, and snacks were also being dropped off.

"People have basically blocked off entrances, no one is leaving until each demand is met. We are prepared to stay there as long as we can," Oyeleke told BuzzFeed News.

She occupied the building from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, had dropped by again Friday morning, and was planning to head back later in the day.

But protest organizers called on students to skip class and continue the building occupation.

“If we can shut down the functionality of the university, they’ll shut down all classes and processes," Juan Demetrixx, a 23-year-old senior and one of the protest organizers, said at a news conference. "If y’all don’t want to go to class, and I know you don’t want to go to class, then come through."

The school's president released a letter addressing the student's demands on Thursday night.

"Howard University has birthed generations of student activists and we will always continue in that spirit, for it is through raising the united voices of our students that Howard scholars have historically created a reverberating impact across the nation and the world," Frederick wrote.

"I am listening to you, and I am challenging my team to make the changes you are expressing a dire need to see. In addition to that, I would like to further increase the engagement with a larger and broader portion of our student body," he added.

But organizers say his response has been inadequate and are still demanding his resignation. They were scheduled to meet with the school board regarding their demands on Friday.

Monisola Oyeleke

"No one was accepting the letter. We all thought it was crap and we are not leaving the building," Oyeleke said.

On Thursday night, students danced in the halls, watched movies — including a documentary about protests at Howard in 1968, played Uno, napped, and did homework, Mohiuddin said. A DJ will be playing in the building on Friday, and more deliveries of pizza are expected.

"We’re here to make a political statement. We’re not here just to have fun and turn up," McKinney said at the news conference.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Reportedly Underwent Emergency Open-Heart Surgery And Is Now In Stable Condition

Kevin Winter / Staff

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the famous body builder-turned-actor-turned-politician, reportedly underwent emergency heart surgery on Thursday.

TMZ reported that Schwarzenegger, 70, was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a catheter valve replacement, an experimental procedure that resulted in complications.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the hospital told BuzzFeed News they could not confirm or deny if the entertainer had been admitted.

Schwarzenegger is said to now be in stable condition, though the emergency open-heart procedure that was conducted after the valve replacement reportedly lasted several hours.

When he was 49, Schwarzenegger underwent a procedure to have a congenitally defective aortic valve replaced.

"Choosing to undergo open-heart surgery when I never felt sick was the hardest decision I've ever made," Schwarzenegger said in a statement at the time. "I can now look forward to a long, healthy life with my family."

Noor Salman, The Pulse Nightclub Shooter's Wife, Is Found Not Guilty Of Helping Him

A Florida jury found Noor Salman, the wife of the Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen, not guilty of aiding and abetting her husband, who pledged allegiance to ISIS, and not guilty of obstructing justice in connection to one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.

Forty nine people were killed and 58 were injured after Mateen, a 29-year-old US citizen, opened fire at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on June 12, 2016. Mateen, who was armed with a handgun and AR-15-type rifle, was killed at the scene after a SWAT team stormed the club. He pledged his allegiance to ISIS during the shooting.

Salman, 31, was charged with aiding and abetting Mateen’s efforts to provide material support to ISIS and with the obstruction of justice for misleading law enforcement authorities in their investigation of the massacre. She faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted on all counts. She was arrested last January, nearly seven months after the shooting.

Prosecutors have argued that Salman "didn't pull the trigger that night, but she did serve as a green light for her husband." Her lawyers have said that she was not aware of Mateen's plans and that the the only mistake she made was that "she married a monster" who abused her and cheated on her.

A rendering shows Noor Salman in court on Thursday.

Charles Treadwell

After three weeks of testimony, a 12-person jury began their deliberations on Wednesday. Salman did not testify in the trial. Last week, the judge denied the defense's motion to declare a mistrial based on the prosecution's delay in disclosing information that Mateen's father was an FBI informant between January 2005 and June 2016 and that he was under a criminal investigation.

At the center of Salman's trial is the validity of claims contained in a statement that Noor submitted to the FBI after Mateen's arrest.

In the statement — written by an FBI agent — Salman said she would "often worry" that Mateen was going to "commit an act of violence or terrorism" because of his behavior over two years which included watching a lot of "jihad videos on the computer" and talking about Muslims "not being able to retaliate against Americans."

Chris O'meara / AP

Her statement also said that she knew Mateen was going to attack Pulse, when he told her "this is my target" after she saw him looking at the club's website on his computer.

"I am sorry for what happened and I wish I'd go back and tell his family and the police what he was going to do," she wrote in the statement that was shown to the court.

However, her defense lawyers argued that the confession was coerced and that some of the claims contained in her statement were contradicted by evidence.

Dr. Bruce Frumkin, a forensic and clinical psychologist who evaluated Salman last year, testified on Tuesday that she is “really extreme, particularly under pressure, in yielding to misleading information," the Orlando Sentinel reported. He added that sleep deprivation could also make a person more susceptible to giving a false confession.

“She's certainly not a really bright person," Frumkin told the court.

More than 100 advocacy groups have signed a letter supporting Salman and calling an end to the prosecution "rooted in gendered Islamophobia and patriarchy."

"She is being prosecuted under the guise of guilt by association as a Muslim woman married to a Muslim man who committed mass violence," the letter states.

The organizations have also accused the government of disregarding "the history of domestic abuse, rape, and threats that Ms. Salman endured during her marriage to Mateen and the impact of intimate partner violence on her and her child's life."

Zuckerberg Says He Disagrees With Growth At All Costs Facebook Memo From Top Exec

Jose Gomez / Reuters

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday that he strongly disagrees with a 2016 memo in which one of the top executives at his company advocated relentless growth, even if "maybe it costs someone a life."

Zuckerberg called Facebook VP Andrew “Boz” Bosworth "a talented leader who says many provocative things," but added the memo was something "that most people at Facebook including myself disagreed with strongly."

"We've never believed the ends justify the means," Zuckerberg said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. "We recognize that connecting people isn't enough by itself. We also need to work to bring people closer together. We changed our whole mission and company focus to reflect this last year."

Zuckerberg's comments were a response a BuzzFeed News report on a memo Bosworth wrote in 2016. In the memo, Bosworth pushed a cutthroat philosophy, writing that "we connect people. Period. That's why all the work we do in growth is justified."

"All the questionable contact importing practices," Bosworth continued. "All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends. All of the work we do to bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it."

At another point, Bosworth wrote that the effects of connecting more people "can be bad if they make it negative. Maybe it costs someone a life by exposing someone to bullies."

"Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools," he added.

The memo was titled "The Ugly" and had not previously been circulated outside the company. Two former Facebook employees told BuzzFeed News that Bosworth is known at the company for being blunt.

News of the memo comes as Facebook faces intense backlash over revelations about the use of its data by political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which did work for Donald Trump's campaign. The fallout over the Cambridge Analytica scandal has raised questions about Facebook's business practices and handling of users' data, and has sent the company's stock spiraling downward.

Here's Why Starbucks In California Will Have To Warn Customers That Coffee Might Cause Cancer

Joe Raedle / Getty Images

If you think you've almost made it through a week of insane, super uplifting news, I have a fun update for you Californians — every time you go to Starbucks or any other place that sells coffee, you will now be reminded that drinking this vital life elixir could kill you.

On Thursday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle ruled that the coffee giant, along with all other vendors and distributors, must include a cancer warning on their products, stating that they failed to properly show the chemical threat.

WHY!? HOW?? Let me explain.

WHY!? HOW?? Let me explain.

giphy.com

In 2010, the California nonprofit Council for Education and Research on Toxics sued Starbucks, Peet's Coffee, Seattle Coffee, and other companies, claiming they violated a state law that requires them to warn customers about cancer-causing chemicals in the roasting process.

As the Washington Post points out, California lists acrylamide, a byproduct of the coffee-roasting process, as a chemical that can cause cancer or "reproductive toxicity." The carcinogen can also be found in french fries, potato chips, and bread, because life is terrible.

So by not listing it on their products, the nonprofit argued that the major coffee sellers violated a 1986 state law known as Proposition 65, which requires all companies with 10 or more employees to clearly warn people before exposing them to California's list of chemicals.

“Defendants concealed from Californians and from plaintiff that their ready-to-drink coffee contained a chemical known to the state to cause cancer,” the complaint argued in 2010, declaring that Starbucks, Peet's, and others should pay massive fines (as much as $2,500 per person) for every customer they may have exposed since 2002.

WUT.

WUT.

Obviously, Starbucks and other major chains fought the complaint and entered a long legal battle. Some more ~basic~ companies, though, like Yum Yum Donuts and 7-Eleven stores, ended up settling, the Washington Post reported.

Fast forward to today, where now, whenever you buy a coffee in California, you will be warned about your potential impending doom. Enjoy.

Starbucks and Peet's did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Though some decided to drink the coff-aid.

While other glass-who-cares-how-full-we're-all-dying-anyway types aptly reminded people that everything is going to kill us anyway.

In conclusion: Life is short. Pick your poison and enjoy it.

Austin's Police Chief Finally Called The Serial Bomber A "Domestic Terrorist"

Chief Brian Manley said he was now “very comfortable” with calling Mark Conditt a “domestic terrorist” for a series of package explosions that killed two people and injured four others.

At a panel hosted by KUT Radio on Thursday, Manley said that he was initially focused on finding the suspect and putting an end to the violence in the community.

Manley said that during the investigation into the five bombings that terrorized the city in March, he was being "very specific on legal definitions that exist under federal law" for any future prosecution of the case.

Conditt, a resident of Plugerville, Texas, killed himself on March 21 by detonating an explosive in his car while SWAT team officers closed in on him along a highway in North Austin.

In a 25-minute cell phone video he recorded hours before his death, Conditt confessed that he was responsible for the six explosive devices, two of which were responsible for the deaths of a 38-year-old black man, Anthony House, and a 17-year-old black musician, Draylen Mason.

A 75-year-old Hispanic woman, Esperanza "Hope" Herrera, was also in critical condition after handling a package sent by Conditt on March 12.

Two other white men were also injured in the bombings, when they set off a trip-wired device with their bicycles on March 18.

Another package exploded at a FedEx facility outside San Antonio while an unexploded package was detected at a FedEx facility near the Austin airport on March 20.

In the immediate aftermath of Conditt's death, Manley faced criticism for describing the serial bomber as a "very challenged young man."

Manley had told reporters that Conditt did not mention anything about terrorism or hate during his confession video.

"Instead it is the outcry of a very challenged young man talking about challenges in his personal life that led him to this point," Manley said.

"When I look at what he did to our community, and as your police chief, I actually agree now that he was domestic terrorist," Manley said.

"I've now had the opportunity to understand and absorb all of the impacts that it had on a personal level and that is why I sit here today and I am very comfortable saying that to our community, and what he did to us, he was domestic terrorist."

Another guest on the panel, Austin Justice Coalition leader Chas Moore, agreed with Manley, but said Conditt had been treated differently because of his race, the Austin Statesman reported.

"Was the young man troubled? Absolutely. But he was a troubled young man that turned out to be a terrorist," Moore said. "Because he was white, we gave him the benefit of being a human first."

After Conditt's death, Trump — who is usually quick to attribute attacks around the world to "radical Islamic terrorism" — tweeted, "AUSTIN BOMBING SUSPECT IS DEAD. Great job by law enforcement and all concerned!"

An Elementary School Art Teacher Was Suspended For Telling Her Students She Was Gay

Former students and parents from an elementary school in Arlington, Texas, say they are devastated a beloved art teacher was suspended after she told students she was married to a woman.

Stacy Bailey, who twice won teacher of the year at Charlotte Anderson Elementary, was suspended last September after the district "received complaints from parents about Ms. Bailey discussing her sexual orientation with elementary-aged students," according to a press release from Mansfield Independent School District. The suspension was first reported by the Dallas Morning News.

"Parents have the right to control the conversation with their children, especially as it relates to religion, politics, sex/sexual orientation, etc," the press release read.

Bailey's lawyer, Giana Ortiz, disputes that multiple parents complained.

"MISD has resorted to a press release, misstating the facts and attempting to paint Stacy as lacking judgment or moral compass. The fact is that she was placed on leave after years of exemplary work based on a single parent complaint," Ortiz said in a statement.

Other parents noted that Bailey won her most recent teacher of the year award in May, just four months before she was suspended. She has taught at Charlotte Anderson since 2008.

For the last three years, Carol Daulton's daughter, Heather, a third-grader at Charlotte Anderson, loved her art class taught by Bailey.

"I am heartbroken that she is no longer in the classroom teaching our kids," said Daulton. "Teachers like her are so incredibly rare."

Daulton said her daughter is an anxious kid who sometimes struggles with behavior issues in the classroom, but that Bailey would build Heather's self-esteem by focusing on things she excelled at. Also, Heather's art knowledge soared.

"I learned more from my elementary school-aged daughter about art history than I ever did in college," said Daulton.

"Not one time, in three years, was sexuality ever a detail that was presented," she added.

When Heather was in first grade, she saw a print of surrealist René Magritte's The Son of Man on the wall of a restaurant during a family dinner.

"She was able to tell us who the artist was, the meaning of different aspects of the painting, tell us about the painter and how he was close to his mother and had painted it during a period of mourning after her death," said Daulton. "My husband and I were stunned. We googled it. Everything she was telling us was right there in Wikipedia."

Bailey taught Chloe Wakeman, now a high school freshman, for five years at Charlotte Anderson.

"She’s an amazing teacher, the best teacher I’ve ever met, my favorite teacher of all time by far," said 15-year-old Chloe.

They took weekend visits to the Dallas Art Museum, and Chloe now takes advanced art classes.

But Chloe said her teacher never spoke in class about her own relationships.

"She didn’t ever talk about anything like that, she didn’t talk about sexuality at all," said Chloe.

Instead, Chloe recalled classes learning about Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrain and Salvador Dali and "how many artists put symbols in their art and how it connects to their life."

Chloe's mother, Kareah Wakeland, 36, noted that her son, Corban, 12, was taught by Bailey for three years in elementary school and had known her as a friend of the family from the age of two. But upon learning Bailey was suspended for talking about her sexuality, Corban said: "I didn’t even know she was gay, mom."

The month before she was suspended, Bailey emailed the school district asking it to "begin a discussion" about introducing LGBTQ protections in its anti-discrimination policies, according to a report in the Dallas Morning News.

"We have many LGBTQ teachers, students, and families in this district. We deserve the right to feel protected by our district," wrote Bailey in her email to an assistant superintendent.

The school district said in its press release from Tuesday that this is not why Bailey was suspended.

The District’s concerns regarding Ms. Bailey are not about her request to have our nondiscrimination policies reviewed and/or revised with regard to LGBTQ rights. Mansfield ISD welcomes that discussion through the District’s established policy review committee. Rather, the District’s concern is that Ms. Bailey insists that it is her right and that it is age appropriate for her to have ongoing discussions with elementary-aged students about her own sexual orientation, the sexual orientation of artists, and their relationships with other gay artists.

Bailey's lawyer, Giana Ortiz, denied that Bailey "insist that is it her right" to talk about her sexuality.

Kareah Wakeland

"This is absolutely false. Further, she never received directives to change her behavior — and never refused to follow any directive," said Ortiz.

A petition to implement LGBT protections for MISD staff and students now has over 2,000 signatures and was introduced to a school district meeting this month, with parents speaking out in support of the teacher.

"She's not forming a gay club in an elementary school, she’s trying to teach kindergartners about Vincent Van Gogh. I don’t think she has time to make them all gay, nor does she have an interest in doing so," said Wakeland, who has had three of her children learn art from Bailey.
