Facebook's Head Of Security Is Reportedly Leaving Over Disagreements On How To Handle The Spread Of Misinformation

Facebook's head of information security is leaving over disagreements about how the company polices the spread of disinformation on its platform, the New York Times first reported Monday.

Alex Stamos joined Facebook as chief information security officer in June 2015 and has been a staunch proponent of uncovering and disclosing how Russia used the social network to influence the US presidential election. But in doing so, he clashed with other top executives, including COO Sheryl Sandberg, the Times reported, citing current and former employees who asked not to be identified.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 38-year-old will be the first high-level employee to leave the company since the misinformation crisis erupted. And the report comes after Facebook announced last week that it had suspended Cambridge Analytica to investigate claims that it used data from 50 million user profiles to craft messages on the social network to influence the 2016 election.

Cambridge Analytica rose to prominence for its work on Donald Trump's presidential campaign, and has been accused of having a shadowy influence on British voters.
