James Foley Asked A Fellow Prisoner To Memorize A Heartbreaking "Letter" To His Family

“I remember so many great family times that take me away from this prison.”

James Foley's family have released a "letter" he sent them while in captivity in Syria on their Facebook page .

Foley, who was killed by ISIS militants last week, had asked one of his fellow captives to memorize the message because those holding him hostage would not let him send messages home. On the Facebook page, the family wrote: "Very soon after his release, this hostage called Diane [Foley's mother] and dictated what follows."

He describes how he drew strength from memories of his family: "going to the mall with Dad, a very long bike ride with Mom." He also describes how his fellow captives pass the time in their cell, playing games with "scraps" they could find, and how he had regained some weight after the feeding regime improved. He concluded by promising to take his grandmother out when he gets home.

We have got more people than we would like. People think that maybe as many as 500 British subjects have gone to Syria and Iraq for this cause of jihad. And it's not a problem exclusive to the United Kingdom. We have got people from lots and lots of Western democracies who, unfortunately, are misguided enough to go to that part of the region and take up a cause which is a betrayal of all our values.
