Officer Daryle Holloway, 46, was bringing Travis Boys, 33, to the New Orleans city jail when Boys escaped from his handcuffs, stole the officer's handgun, and shot him in the head, police spokesman Tyler Gamble said.

The police car then crashed into a utility pole and the suspect fled the vehicle on foot while armed, triggering a manhunt.

According to Gamble, Holloway was brought to a nearby hospital where he died at 9 a.m. local time, about half an hour after he was first shot.

Boys had been arrested on an aggregate assault charge. It remains unclear how he managed to break free of his handcuffs and steal Holloway's weapon, though it is apparent that the officer put up a fight before being shot, the Times-Picayune reported.
