Stone, who is a first class Airman in the U.S. Air Force, was stabbed in Sacramento, California, early Thursday morning, a spokesperson from the U.S. Air Force told BuzzFeed News. He is currently being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition.

A local NBC affiliate TV station in Sacramento reported on the stabbing, but did not include the victim's name. According to KCRA TV, the victim took "multiple stab wounds to the torso" at around 1 AM on Thursday on a street corner.

Initially, police thought he would not survive the attack, KCRA reported, but he stabilized at a nearby hospital.

Stone was one of three American men and a British citizen living in France to help stop a shooting attack on a Paris-bound train in last August by subduing a gunman who was armed with a handgun and an automatic rifle.

The men tackled the shooter and wrestled his gun away from him. In the fray, the gunman stabbed Stone multiple times with a box cutter before the three men beat the gunman until he lost consciousness.

Stone and the two others – who were his friends from childhood – received Legion d'Honneur medals, France's highest honor.
