The family of an 11-year-old South Carolina boy says he saved his younger sister's life when he pushed her out of the way of an out-of-control car moments before it struck and killed him.

La'Darious Wylie of Chester, South Carolina, was waiting for the school bus with his sister Sha'Vonta on Oct. 27 when a car came veering towards them. The young boy lunged to push his sister out of the way moments before he was struck by the car, Elizabeth McCrorey, the mother of both children, told The Charlotte Observer.

"He knew to look out for her," McCrorey said.

Sha'Vonta told the police about what happened and said by the time she got up the car had driven away, her mother said.

Wylie died the following day at a hospital after succumbing to his injuries.

Police arrested the driver of the car last Thursday — two days after the incident. Michelle Johnson, 57, faces a charge of felony hit-and-run resulting in death. She was released last Friday after posting bail of $25,000. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to 25 years in jail.

"I don't hate her," McCrorey said of Johnson. "I just wish she had stopped."
