U.S. Marshals handout
The so-called "affluenza" teen from Texas who went missing with his mother earlier this month has been detained in the beach resort town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, officials briefed on the matter told CNN Monday.

Ethan Couch, now 18, became infamous in 2013 when he avoided jail time for killing four people in a drunk driving crash in part by his defense team arguing that he suffered from “affluenza” — or the affliction of being too spoiled by affluent parents, which left him without a sense of responsibility.
The court agreed with the appeal for leniency and sentenced Couch to 10 years of probation instead of the 20 years in prison that prosecutors had requested.

But he went missing in early December shortly after a Twitter user posted a video of a man who appears to be Couch playing beer pong with friends — a violation of the terms of his probation.
On Dec. 11, the U.S. Marshals issued an arrest warrant for Couch, making him a fugitive. Federal officials also offered a reward of $5,000 for information leading to his capture.
It was not immediately clear what led authorities to Puerto Vallarta or under what circumstances he was detained.
An official at the U.S. Marshals office had no immediate comment on the CNN report, nor did Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson.
Couch, meanwhile, was expected to be turned over to U.S. Marshals custody. His 48-year-old mother, Tonya Couch, was listed as a missing person but authorities say she could have been providing assistance.
